By Brandon Sanderson

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Raoden (Protagonist)

Also known as Spirit

Appears from the start

Arelon's crown prince, believed dead outside Elantris. Transformed by the Shaod and known within the city as Spirit, he has organized many of its suffering inhabitants into a working community while continuing to search for the flaw that silenced AonDor.

Sarene (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Princess of Teod and Raoden's legal widow, though she arrived after his supposed death and has never knowingly met him. She has become a leader of Arelon's opposition, defending the kingdom from Hrathen's conversion campaign while trying to stabilize its collapsing politics.

Hrathen (Antagonist)

Also known as Gyorn Hrathen

Appears from the start

The Derethi gyorn ordered to convert Arelon before Fjorden intervenes by force. Sarene has frustrated his carefully managed campaign, and he is increasingly divided between loyalty to his mission, distrust of Dilaf's fanaticism, and doubts he does not publicly admit.

Dilaf (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

A zealous Derethi priest whose hatred of Elantris and preference for violent action have repeatedly strained Hrathen's political strategy. He appears to be Hrathen's subordinate but commands a devoted local following of his own.

Galladon (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Raoden's loyal Dula companion inside Elantris. Galladon's practical knowledge and skepticism balance Raoden's optimism, and he has helped turn Spirit's plans into a settlement capable of feeding and defending its people.

Karata (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A former gang leader within Elantris who now works with Spirit after seeing that his settlement can protect the city's children. Fierce, direct, and accustomed to command, she becomes one of the community's principal defenders.

Saolin (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A soldier transformed by the Shaod who has found renewed purpose serving Spirit's settlement. He organizes and trains its defenders even though every Elantrian wound adds permanent pain.

Ashe (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Sarene's seon and trusted companion. Ashe carries messages, gathers information, and provides a magical link to allies as the political and military danger around Arelon intensifies.

Iadon (Supporting)

Also known as King Iadon

Appears from the start

King of Arelon and Raoden's father. His monarchy, built on wealth after Elantris fell, is losing credibility as the economy deteriorates and Sarene's coalition gains influence.

Duke Roial (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An elderly duke who opposes Iadon and works closely with Sarene. His long experience and network among Arelon's nobility make him a plausible leader if the king's government fails.

Kiin (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Sarene's merchant uncle and one of her most dependable allies in Arelon. His family offers her personal refuge, while his commercial experience and guarded past give weight to his political advice.

Shuden (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A nobleman from Jindo allied with Sarene and Raoden's former political circle. His quiet discipline conceals abilities that most members of the Arelene court neither recognize nor understand.

Telrii (Minor)

Appears from the start

A rich, self-interested noble whose fortune gives him leverage during Arelon's succession crisis. His willingness to bargain for status makes him useful to stronger political forces around him.
