In short (whole book)
Val investigates a vanished dark-elf pleasure orb and a series of ritual murders, uncovering a plan to force Mount Rainier to erupt by channeling melted glacier water toward magma. She joins Willard's Army expedition, penetrates the dark elves' glacier complex with Sindari and Zav, and helps disable the pipe system. Zav captures Yemeli Lore and her male associate, while his sister seals part of the apparatus and takes the prisoners to the Dragon Justice Court. During the fight, Val discovers that Lorena, her supposed cousin, hid compulsion magic in a luck charm and used it to make her attack Zav. Rainier remains intact and its seismic activity subsides, but evidence points to broader volcanic attacks. Lorena escapes, and Val's susceptibility to control leaves her romance with Zav unsettled. They nevertheless agree to pursue a kelpie together, while Val plans magical training and begins teaching Amber to defend herself.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Val Thorvald, a half-elf Army investigator, handled magical threats while remaining largely cut off from her elven heritage. Her closest field ally was Sindari, a summoned tiger linked to her through a figurine. Willard directed her official work, while Nin and Dimitri formed part of her small circle of friends. Val had also begun renewing contact with her daughter, Amber, and her former husband, Thad. Her encounters with the dragon criminal hunter Zav created an uneasy bond marked by attraction and distrust, leaving them connected despite the hazards surrounding dragons and their authority.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Val searches the closed Rupert's Bar for a missing dark-elf pleasure orb and finds evidence of several deaths. A young troll sells her a fragment from the orb, but an unfamiliar dragon interrupts the trail. The newcomer is Zav's sister, who also stole Val's medical file and believes Val plans to betray Zav. Zav stops her interrogation and publicly maintains that Val is his claimed mate, a cover that protects Val from the Dragon Justice Court over Dob's death. Dimitri, Nin, and Zoltan begin examining the fragment, while Zav finds that the dark elves have cleared their former lair. Val and Sindari then discover the Northern Pride slaughtered in a ritual linked to dark elves. Surviving shifters attack them in error, and a dying shifter confirms that the dark elves used Pride members as test subjects. Willard identifies the killings as sacrificial and reveals that a magical intruder stole the dark elves' alchemy book from secure evidence. A translated copy remains, but the theft suggests another operation is near.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Zav's sister escalates from surveillance to a painful search of Val's memories. Lorena, an elf claiming to be Val's cousin and her father's agent, drives the dragon away and later gives Val a luck charm. She begins teaching Val magical sensing and mental defense. Zav says his claim has made Val a target and intends to release her after his current hunt. When his sister questions Amber and apparently alters her memory, Val demands that Zav leave Earth to protect her family. Meanwhile, Zoltan's work connects the stolen dark-elf formulas to seismic data, and Willard matches that data to Mount Rainier. They conclude that dark elves may be trying to cause an eruption, possibly using pleasure orbs to obstruct evacuation. A troll child then confirms that Yemeli Lore and a male dark elf murdered Rupert after he broke their orb. Val promises to pursue them. With Zav gone and Lorena constrained by a truce, Val and Willard prepare an Army expedition to Rainier, where Val must rely on her developing elven senses and her human team.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Willard's team reaches Mount Rainier and finds a destroyed monitoring station, huge tracks, and the bodies of six missing scientists. The dark elves have sealed a former cave entrance and left a rock golem to guard it. Clark is wounded during the attack, while Val destroys the construct with Chopper and a grenade. The team shifts to a deep glacier crevice despite worsening weather. Lorena warns Val that Zav's sister is approaching and teaches her how to heat or chill Chopper. Val and Sindari sense extensive magic below the ice. Willard and Val descend about five hundred feet, identify the enormous tracks as belonging to frost giants, and locate a route toward a dark-elf complex. Val scouts ahead with Sindari while Willard remains near the exit.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
Eight dark elves pursue Val and Sindari from the tunnels. Val and Willard delay them with flashbangs and an icefall, but the dark elves force Sindari back to his realm and strike Val during the climb out. The Army team becomes stranded by snow and fog while waiting for reinforcements. Val regrets sending Zav away and recognizes that she wanted him to stay despite the danger surrounding his claim. Before help can arrive, six magically protected frost giants assault the camp. Zav and his sister return as dragons, save the soldiers, and heal Val. Their mother has ordered the sister to stop harassing Val and assist with the capture, though her hostility remains. Zav still treats his mark as evidence that Val is his mate, while Val rejects the idea that she is his property. With the dark elves believed close to triggering an eruption, Val, Zav, and Willard begin planning a direct incursion against the underground force and its two principal scientists.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
Zav plans to draw roughly 150 dark elves away while Val searches for the eruption machinery and the two fugitives. He explains that Yemeli Lore is a priestess and that her male partner is both a warrior and a scientist. Rebel elves have learned to reverse the Dragon Justice Court's rehabilitation, creating renewed fugitives whom Zav must hunt across worlds. Val and Zav enter without Willard's soldiers. Sindari returns injured, and Zav begins his diversion while Val and the tiger slip into a side passage. A remote compulsion nearly makes Val stab Zav, warning her that another enemy may be influencing her. Inside, the dark elves have converted her abandoned gas detector into an alarm. Sindari carries it away, and Val breaches an ice obstruction despite tremors and volcanic fumes. She reaches a supply chamber containing maps and a network of pipes. Funnels in the glacier are melting water into four chambers whose pipes descend toward magma. After killing two guards, Val understands that all four sections must be disabled before the system can force an eruption.
Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)
Val finds papers showing that the Rainier operation may be part of a wider plan involving Yellowstone and global volcanic disruption. She welds the first chamber's pipe caps shut, then reaches a second chamber where Yemeli Lore and the male scientist are operating the system. Yemeli nearly kills her, but Zav and Sindari overcome the scientists. A female voice then compels Val to shoot Zav. Val identifies Lorena as the source, and Zav removes the luck charm, exposing the coercion embedded within it. Zav's sister seals pipes with dragon fire and takes the captured scientists and other prisoners to the Dragon Justice Court. When the cave exit collapses, Zav carries the poisoned Val through a portal and heals her off-world before returning her to Rainier. The volcano does not erupt, and the cave entrance is bombed. Nearly two weeks later, seismic activity is quiet. Lorena is revealed as a false cousin, an anti-dragon rebel leader, and the person who hired the assassin of Zav's brother. She remains free. Zav keeps his distance from Val but offers help with magical training. They accept a joint kelpie case, while Val agrees to give Amber regular weapons instruction.
How does it end? (ending)
Nearly two weeks after the Rainier caves collapse, seismic activity has settled and no dark elves are known to have escaped. Yemeli Lore and the male scientist are alive in Dragon Justice Court custody, but their papers indicate a larger campaign against other volcanic sites. Lorena remains free after being exposed as a false cousin and anti-dragon rebel who used the luck charm to control Val. Zav confirms that Lorena arranged the assassination of his only clutchmate brother. He accepts that Val did not attack him willingly, yet keeps emotional distance because she remains vulnerable to coercion. His claim and mark still bind them, and their attraction remains unresolved. Zav offers to help Val seek elven and dwarven training, then agrees to join her next assignment, a kelpie case. Willard pays Val for the Rainier work despite her disobedience. Val may also become a partner in Dimitri's shop, and she begins rebuilding her relationship with Amber through regular weapons lessons.
