Ethan of Athos

By Lois McMaster Bujold

On the all-male planet Athos, reproductive physician Ethan Urquhart discovers that a shipment of ovarian tissue cultures needed to sustain the colony's population is fraudulent, containing diseased and non-human material instead of the promised genetic stock. Appointed as the Population Council's purchasing agent, Ethan leaves Athos to arrange a fresh supply from a galactic trade hub, carrying the colony's entire annual foreign-exchange fund and confronting a wider universe of women and unfamiliar customs he was raised without. When he is abducted by an operative hunting a missing genetics project, Ethan finds his ordinary mission for reproductive material now entangled in a hidden intelligence operation that may threaten Athos itself.
