Ethan of Athos recap

When Athos's aging ovarian cultures begin failing and a Bharaputra shipment arrives as worthless biological material, reproductive physician Ethan Urquhart is sent off-world to buy replacements. On Kline Station he joins Dendarii agent Elli Quinn, survives a Cetagandan intelligence team led by Luyst Millisor, and grants refuge to Terrence Cee, an engineered telepath whose dead partner's genes were placed in the missing shipment. Biocontrol warden Helda admits substituting the cargo to force her emigrant son home. Millisor's attempt to recapture Cee ends with Millisor, Rau and Setti dead. Ethan and Cee then recover the supposedly discarded cultures from external storage. They return to Athos with legitimate Beta Colony cultures hidden in their place, preserving the recovered telepathy genes for gradual secret use. Elli contributes a viable ovarian culture and departs, while Cee chooses a possible family future with Ethan on Athos.

Athos depends on stored ovarian cultures for reproduction, but its old stocks are losing viability. A costly Bharaputra delivery promised hundreds of replacements and instead yields dead, diseased and nonhuman tissue. The Population Council sends reproductive physician Ethan Urquhart off-world with its available foreign exchange to obtain a dependable supply. He leaves behind his unreliable foster brother Janos and reaches Kline Station, where Dendarii commander Elli Quinn assists him during an undercover assignment. Cetagandan officer Luyst Millisor then abducts and drugs Ethan, believing he can lead the team to Terrence Cee and the secret genetics project called Terran Sea. Millisor threatens Athos and orders Okita to kill Ethan. Elli intervenes, and Okita dies. She conceals both Ethan and the body, then recruits Ethan's help to dispose of it through the station's regulated recycling system. By the end of chapter 5, the death has been hidden and Ethan has allied himself with Elli to learn why Athos's shipment became part of a Cetagandan hunt.

Elli determines that Bharaputra dispatched the genuine cultures and that the substitution must have occurred during their storage on Kline Station. She is observing Millisor for the Dendarii and also holds a Bharaputra contract against his team. Ethan separates from her, survives another attack by Rau and receives quiet help from biocontrol assistant Techie. Terrence Cee then approaches him and asks for asylum. Cee explains that Faz Jahar's secret Cetagandan program engineered him and Janine as telepaths. Their ability requires large doses of tyramine and functions only at limited range. They destroyed the laboratory while escaping, but Rau later killed Janine. Before her remains were cremated, Cee arranged for cultured ovarian tissue from Janine to enter Athos's Bharaputra order. He intended the remote colony to become his refuge and to preserve the telepathy genes beyond Cetagandan control. Ethan accepts his plea despite having little real diplomatic authority. Elli finds them together, bringing the missing target, Athos's purchasing agent and the pursuing investigator into one uneasy alliance.

Elli offers Cee protection and a Dendarii commission, but he distrusts institutional control and insists on using activated telepathy to judge her and Ethan. A commercial search for tyramine exposes Millisor's surveillance, so Ethan supplies the substance through ordinary foods. Cee confirms that the genuine shipment left Bharaputra, further narrowing the switch to Kline Station. He refuses to surrender his genetic material unless Janine's donation is found. When Techie's girlfriend Sarah reports him missing, Elli concludes that Millisor has abducted him. She files a false disease warning against Millisor's cover identity, Harman Dal, forcing biocontrol and security into his rooms. They recover Techie alive but tortured. Ethan recognizes that Helda had the access and materials needed to replace the shipment. Helda confesses that she sabotaged Athos to force her emigrant son Simmy home and says she discarded the real cultures. Millisor and Rau are detained, Elli is held as a witness, and the mystery appears resolved with Janine's genetic legacy destroyed.

Station authorities clear Ethan, plan to deport Millisor's group and pressure Ethan not to pursue Helda. Millisor reveals that Janine's donation was not the shipment's only altered component. Every intended culture carried the recessive telepathy complex, designed to spread through Athos and produce telepaths in later generations. Ethan still refuses to betray Cee and selects Beta Colony as the likely source of safe replacements. An apparent request from Cee draws him into a docking-bay ambush, where Millisor and Rau have escaped custody and captured both Cee and Elli. Millisor intends to take Cee and stage Ethan's and Elli's deaths. Elli triggers an explosive message capsule, killing Setti and damaging the escape route. Plasma fire then kills Millisor and Rau. Bharaputra agents briefly seize Elli over her unfinished contract, injure her elbow and accept Okita's and Setti's deaths as partial performance. Ethan, Elli and Cee keep Cee out of the official account, while station security arrests Elli. The Cetagandan recovery team is eliminated, but Cee must remain concealed.

Kline Station releases Elli after fines and medical treatment, and her account keeps Cee out of the record. At Ethan's request she donates ovarian tissue to Athos, producing a viable initial culture. Cee gives her data and a tissue sample but declines to join the Dendarii. He and Ethan then discover that Helda did not destroy the Bharaputra shipment: nine containers remain in unrecorded external storage and may still be viable. Ethan returns to Athos with Cee and the recovered cartons. To meet the colony's immediate need without disclosing the telepathy complex, they substitute 450 cultures purchased on Beta Colony and alter the records. Ethan keeps the recovered material for gradual, covert genetic integration and reserves Elli's culture for his own future sons. Janos has left for the Outlands and does not plan to return. Ethan offers Cee support and the possibility of becoming designated alternates in future parenting. Cee accepts the prospect of a life on Athos, leaving the colony supplied with legitimate cultures while its telepathic genetic future remains in their hands.

Millisor, Rau, Setti and Okita are dead, ending the Cetagandan pursuit. Helda's sabotage is exposed, Techie survives his abduction, and Elli Quinn leaves Kline Station after medical treatment and payment of fines. She carries data and a tissue sample from Terrence Cee, but he declines the Dendarii offer. Ethan and Cee find the nine Bharaputra containers in external storage and take them to Athos, where they secretly present 450 legitimate cultures bought on Beta Colony instead. Ethan reserves Elli's successful culture for his own future sons and retains the recovered cultures for a gradual, concealed introduction of the telepathy complex. Janos has departed for the Outlands and will not return. Cee settles on Athos under his own identity, supported by Ethan, and the two consider becoming designated alternates in future parenting. Athos's immediate reproductive crisis is solved, while its planned genetic transformation remains secret and unresolved.
