In short (whole book)

Hal leads a refugee caravan into the Shiverglades to found a free settlement beyond Rinbast's control. He saves Ashera from Broken Faith, establishes Bravers Guild, secures a monoseed, and plants it as a mana tree that anchors the new refuge and ties both Hal and Noth to its survival. Local allies, a trapped gold dragon, and the guild's combined labor help prepare for the region's first assault. During a separate quest, Hal completes three Dark Communions with Besal and attracts the attention of an ancient Coaltheel council. The settlement survives a void-driven siege, but Komachi teleports Ashera, Elora, Durvin, Vorax, and other defenders to an unknown destination. Hal and Besal defeat Rinbast's void-corrupted scarred counterpart, with Besal rejecting ascension and choosing Hal as his brother. Dawn ends the incursion, leaving the guild with a temporary claim, missing friends to recover, and Hal's promise to free Rinbast's other captive counterparts.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Hal became a Founder in Aldim and gathered companions while resisting the rule of Rinbast. His Beastborn class gave him powerful monster-derived magic but also bound him to Besal, a dangerous inner counterpart capable of contesting control. Hal's choices also transformed Noth from a Reaper into a mortal woman, leaving her without the directives and certainty that once defined her. Vorax, an intelligent mimic, became part of Hal's chosen family. By the beginning of this volume, Hal is leading refugees west toward the Shiverglades, where he hopes to establish a free sanctuary for people unwilling to live under Rinbast. The caravan includes fighters, dwarves, koblins, and other allies who have placed their future in Hal's hands. Their goal is not merely escape. They need a defensible home, supplies, and a source of power strong enough to sustain an independent community.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Hal's party travels west while helping Elora follow a quest only she can hear. Ashera nearly dies from Broken Faith, the punishment imposed after she opposed Rinbast and lost access to her Sinkeeper healing. Hal enters her mind with Dominate and breaks the restraints causing the bleeding, but the rescue places his Founder mark on her and creates an unwanted awareness link. He later dismisses active control and keeps the circumstances private until Ashera admits to the group that she can no longer heal. Her companions refuse to abandon her. A flock of corrupted creatures nearly kills Mira and forces Hal to spend almost all his experience dominating attackers and using them to restore the party. At the heart-shaped lake, Elora crosses alone to a ruined island, defeats corrupted spirits, and meets Komachi, a small speaking Pobol. Elora accepts a fabled Wilds Master evolution and forms a permanent familiar pact with Komachi, whose unusual magic includes travel to a Feyworld and an ability to locate treasure.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Komachi retrieves a huge locked coffer and joins the caravan with Elora. Vorax senses that the new familiar conceals immense power, but accepts her friendship after finding no malicious intent. Ashera withdraws from combat and becomes quartermaster and alchemy teacher, though the loss of her former role continues to distress her. Hal learns to make a potent but toxic emergency health injection. Noth, struggling with mortality, tells Hal that she once blamed him for her condition but now recognizes her own choices in the change. She forgives him, returns to his immediate group, and begins defining a life built around home, friendship, and chosen purpose. Komachi grants Hal's wagon group a temporary skill-learning blessing, which Hal, Ashera, and Noth use for intensive alchemy practice. Rondo explains the Boulderguts' valuable mineral customs and their growing respect for Hal. As the training ends, Yesel reports a rapidly approaching monostorm, and Hal orders the caravan into a tight defensive formation.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Luda amplifies Hal's Monoshields until they cover the caravan, but fighters must still meet the monostorm's crystalline creatures outside the protection. Hal confronts Ashera's belief that she has become useless and swears an Oath of Compassion to restore or replace her lost magic. She returns to the front line and proves she can still provide powerful combat support. As the storm evolves, Hal identifies a distortion at its center. His companions clear a path, and Mira carries him through the caustic air before turning back. Touching the distortion ends the immediate storm but sends Hal to a separate arena against its enormous guardian. He refuses to surrender control to Besal, survives severe strain, and uses improvised bone weapons after the guardian destroys his sword. Hal shatters the creature's exposed chest jewel and kills it, earning valuable storm materials and a title. The collapsing arena then drops him from a great height, but he fashions a membrane parachute and returns alive, injured and suffering potion toxicity.

Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)

Ashera treats Hal's toxicity while Besal offers a more cooperative relationship, claiming Beastborn and counterpart should function symbiotically. Hal remains wary. He improves his leadership abilities and resumes the journey toward the Lone Arch, where the caravan expects to find a mana seed. Hal enters the warded arch realm alone and follows strict rules that forbid weapons, magic, and hostile intent. After navigating its shifting paths, he takes a living monoseed from a dying tree and survives the realm's violent rejection. Durvin explains that the seed can establish a true guild before it is planted without preventing its eventual use for a settlement. Hal creates Bravers Guild and becomes guildmaster. Noth is the first to join, followed by Hal's trusted companions and then the wider caravan. Durvin's acceptance brings Clan Bouldergut into the guild, while Vorax becomes treasurer and the koblins receive advisory standing. The new guild has members and a portable bank, but no territory, archetype, or permanent home.

Story so far - through chapter 57 (this book)

The guild encounters an abandoned human caravan whose intelligent carracks have survived independently. After Hal's group treats their wounded young, Komachi translates their account and helps secure an agreement under which they join as friends rather than property. A diary reveals their former humans were pursuing Rinbast's bounty on Hal. Noth tells Hal she wants to fight and explore beside him after the sanctuary is safe, and their growing attraction remains unresolved. Hal develops a formal Bonecraft discipline while creating Emissary, a fabled bone falchion that stores mana and can return to him across miles. Rediscovering Bonecraft raises Bravers Guild to level one. Hal centralizes supplies in the guild bank, selects an Authority perk for operational information, and turns exceptional meals for Komachi into the guild's first quest. Fed by competing cooks, Komachi accelerates the lighter caravan. The group leaves the Mirror Lands, crosses dangerous country, and reaches the Barrier Peaks one day from the Shiverglades.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

Hal continues developing Bonecraft and portable mana storage while preparing the caravan's future fighters and leaders. At Fool's Pass, a projection delivers Rinbast's offer: abandon the rebellion and Hal may return to Earth or leave for another world. Hal refuses because acceptance would mean betraying his companions. Inside the Shiverglades, the caravan meets the Ebon Star tribe through a controlled trial. After Hal and Noth defeat a fog beast, the tribe provides umbral branches that repel the Void Mist and assigns a suspicious scout leader to guide the outsiders. She leads the caravan safely toward the central mountain. Hal rejects several possible sites until Noth and Yesel find a sheltered valley with water, natural barriers, and access into the mountain. Komachi plants the monoseed there. It rapidly becomes a protective mana tree whose influence improves recovery and suppresses harmful area effects. Hal accepts guardianship and a soul tether that makes the tree his resurrection point.

Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)

Planting the monoseed begins a claim trial: the settlement must survive an assault in seven days while preserving both the tree and most of its people. Hal assigns gathering, surveying, construction, and monster diplomacy across the guild. Bravers Guild adopts the Settlement archetype and converts from a caravan into an outpost, gaining a temporary Founder's Day advantage. Hal binds the settlement to the mana tree, making their survival inseparable. Durvin's measurements show that sealing the valley entrance will require extensive walls and more material than the guild possesses, so Hal and Noth consider mass-produced bone construction. Meanwhile Vorax and the koblins explore the mountain opening and discover a warded society of bat-like scouts led by a trapped gold dragon. The dragon welcomes the new settlement, offers his scouts and advice, and warns that the Shiverglades will attack it. He also confirms that the mana-tree bond makes Hal and Noth effectively immortal as long as the tree survives.

Story so far - through chapter 89 (this book)

The gold dragon offers reconnaissance and selected planning knowledge but cannot leave his confinement to fight. Hal delegates construction and uses the mana tree's influence to cultivate possible plant allies around it. Elora develops warming equipment for Komachi and the wider settlement. Local observers recognize Komachi as a rare ancient being and debate whether Hal's community can survive the coming regional response. The settlement struggles to balance food, shelter, walls, and morale within its seven-day deadline. Luda identifies useful specialists among her followers, including a chef and construction workers, while Hal improves wall projects and designs trap-focused defenses. The planted creatures transform under the mana tree, whose rapid growth and emotional connection convince Hal to protect it from exploitation. Luda then links her oracle amplification to the tree and extends Founder's Day to cover the entire defense window. The settlement retains its crucial bonuses to morale, production, gathering, recovery, and learning through the expected night of attack.

Story so far - through chapter 100 (this book)

Hal converts ordinary building components into reproducible bone bricks and palisade spikes, then joins Noth in Durvin's Ironspine construction band. His Bonecraft abilities sharply reduce costs and accelerate the defenses. The guild completes enough work to advance from outpost to encampment, unlocking specialized buildings and research. Noth affirms that mortality has given her the home and happiness she lacked as a Reaper. Elora leaves with the Ebon Star guide to seek missing scouts and possible help, learning that Komachi's species predates Aldim's world-shard rules and follows them by choice. The guide says such beings are god-like but not divine. Back at the settlement, organized meals and warming equipment improve daily life while wall construction moves ahead of schedule. The town hall is completed, and Hal designates it as a recreation space to protect morale even though this reduces workforce efficiency. The refuge now has a communal center and stronger defenses, but repeated monster activity shows the surrounding danger is already increasing.

Story so far - through chapter 110 (this book)

Hal and Noth kill a powerful vine creature near the works, then acknowledge their feelings and begin a romantic relationship. Repeated attacks lead Hal to form a scouting party with Noth, Ashera, Angram, Durvin, and an armed carrack. Angram receives authority over the settlement's rangers, and Ashera returns to active protection despite her unresolved loss of magic. Outside the valley, the party finds that Void Mist recoils from Hal because of his link to the mana tree. Organized mantis-like creatures ambush them. The group defeats the first wave, but an abnormal survivor molts into a much larger leader, paralyzes the party, and gravely injures the carrack. Hal accepts limited power from Besal while Noth turns the enemy's spilled blood into healing for the group. Hal and Durvin sever the leader's rear legs, but it takes flight with Hal clinging to its body. He is carried away from his companions with little mana and no immediate route back.

Story so far - through chapter 117 (this book)

Hal kills the flying leader in midair and survives the resulting fall, but lands alone far from the settlement. Reaching Beastborn level twenty gives him stronger essence combinations and a class quest centered on Besal. The counterpart manifests face to face, apologizes for his earlier attempts at control, and proposes a dangerous cooperative ritual. Hal must choose between purging Besal and completing three Dark Communions. He chooses communion in hopes of gaining enough synchronization to prevent future loss of control. Besal guides him to a mana-rich conflict between monster families, where Hal tests new abilities and spares a wounded rhinoceros beetle. The first Communion traps Hal in a false version of his old life on Earth, offering familiar misery at the price of forgetting Aldim and his companions. Besal helps him recognize the illusion. Hal rejects the retreat, breaks free with Besal, and completes the first trial. He establishes a temporary camp, still separated from his party, with two Communions remaining.

Story so far - through chapter 129 (this book)

The spared beetle tends Hal's camp while he crafts insulated replacement armor from several monster essences. His new synchronization allows Besal to lend mana and briefly manifest outside Hal, so Hal equips him with a bone sword. Bat messengers report that Noth's party is safe but unwilling to abandon the search. Hal and Noth agree that she will return to direct the settlement defenses while he continues his class quest. Traveling with Besal and the beetle, Hal causes an uncontrolled forest fire while testing enhanced explosive magic, then crosses a region filled with strange ancient structures linked to his Founder mark. His map stops identifying the area. The trio enters vast ruins beyond a protected boundary, where an unnatural calm masks a history of severe conflict. Besal believes the site contains the conditions needed for the second Communion, but warns Hal that the peace itself is part of the danger.

Story so far - through chapter 138 (this book)

Within the ruins, Hal activates a temple dais and descends into a cavern where a copper-marked ancient mage tries to steal his Founder mark. The mage merges with a massive void creature, forcing Hal and manifested Besal into a desperate fight. Hal collapses the platform beneath the enemy, and Besal saves him during the fall. Hal seizes the mage's Copper Coaltheel as the attacker dies, then awakens before a council of thirteen discorporated mages. The council rules that he acted in defense but leaves him to escape the abyss without aid. An iron mage covertly guides him out and warns that the awakened council may draw Hal into its internal struggle. Three days have passed. Hal immediately completes his second Communion with Besal, freeing them both from illusions that exploit their fears and desire for power. He names the accompanying rhinoceros beetle Beetle and races home carrying the foreign Copper Coaltheel, whose continuing bleed drains and injures him.

Story so far - through chapter 145 (this book)

Hal advances his magic and begins the long return to the settlement, expecting to arrive after the attack starts. During his absence, Noth becomes acting leader. She resolves labor disputes, works with Ashera and the dwarves, and orders defensive tunnels and elevated positions cut into the cliffs around the valley gap. Durvin recognizes that Clan Bouldergut now regards the refuge as home and trusts both Hal's vision and Noth's command. Elsewhere in the mountain, Mira reveals to the gold dragon that she entered Aldim improperly and is being rejected by the world shard. The dragon temporarily stabilizes her and gives her a single-use gold scale for emergency power, agreeing to conceal her condition. At the wall, Durvin oversees layered traps and preparations for Elora's hoped-for return. The expected siege begins early when monsters erupt from the ground inside the gap, and defenders rush to the high ground while Hal remains absent.

Story so far - through chapter 155 (this book)

Hal develops short-burst flight, dominates a powerful feline as a mount, and reaches the settlement during the mass assault. Noth has already organized parapets, catapults, ranger positions, and cliff defenses. Ashera runs triage, potions, supplies, messengers, and rest rotations, while Durvin commands the wall. Hal uses the mana tree's defensive power, recruits a transformed tree ant, and attacks the horde from above to create fire lanes for repairs. A black miasma then suppresses light and drives the mana barrier inward. Hal's miniature-sun sigil reveals that Void Mist is reanimating and directing dead monsters. The sigil's backlash incapacitates his body, but his mind remains active through creatures he has dominated. He turns them against the horde, repairs walls, and crystallizes defenses through his new mark abilities. With his controlled force dwindling and the wall certain to fail under sustained pressure, Hal sends the tree ant away and commits to a final plan whose result remains unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 163 (this book)

Elora returns with the Ebon Star scout leader and roughly two dozen local fighters, who treat the void corruption as a threat to their own homeland. The reinforcements learn that Hal's marked monsters are allies and help shore up the wall. Ashera uses increasingly dangerous occult and spell-seizing magic to clear attackers and rescue Durvin outside the defenses. A redirected destructive spell still detonates near her. The blast vaporizes part of the wall, opens an eastern breach, and leaves Ashera, Durvin, and other defenders badly injured. Elora breaks her leg trying to reach Ashera. Komachi reacts in terror, first driving nearby monsters into a frenzy and then releasing a prismatic burst. Elora, Ashera, Durvin, Vorax, and at least a dozen other people vanish. Their destination and condition are unknown. The injured scout leader uses her greatsword and duplicating magic to hold the breach while Luda sustains a failing barrier. The settlement survives for the moment, but the defense has lost several of its central leaders.

Story so far - through chapter 169 (this book)

Mira spends the gold dragon's scale power to break the magic suppressing Hal's consciousness, then joins the breach defense with strength from another world shard. A hooded, scarred attacker who resembles Hal intercepts her. Hal awakens without access to his mark abilities and takes over the duel, discovering that the enemy mirrors his Beastborn spells and combat knowledge. The attacker is a scarred alternate Hal branded and controlled by Rinbast. Besal blocks a killing blow, allowing Hal to keep fighting despite severe wounds. The counterpart explains that Rinbast's control is absolute and resents Hal for escaping it. Hal drains his opponent's strain, entering increasingly dangerous states as both versions exchange opposing essence combinations. When Hal detonates magic inside an existing chest wound, he disrupts the power that had contained the corruption there. The wound becomes a black-hole heart that consumes spells and transforms the counterpart into a void-racked creature, renewing the fight under far more dangerous conditions.

Story so far - through chapter 176 (this book)

Hal and Besal share control to keep the void-racked counterpart away from the settlement, but the enemy's black-hole heart turns the duel into attrition. They use mana-tree energy to reflect void lightning and weaken the corruption. The heart eventually pulls Hal out of Besal and traps him inside, where he defeats a copying manifestation by exploiting its inability to create anything new. Besal reaches the final strain threshold but rejects ascension into a star-bound horror, choosing instead to save Hal. The dying counterpart asks Hal to end his life before the corruption erases him and reveals that other branded brothers remain under Rinbast's control. Hal promises to free them and kills him. Hal then reunites with Besal, completing their third Communion in substance as Besal voluntarily returns control and names Hal his friend and brother. Dawn burns away the Void Mist and ends the incursion. Bravers Guild receives a temporary recognized claim, but Ashera, Elora, Durvin, Vorax, and the others taken by Komachi remain missing. Noth commits the survivors to finding them.

How does it end? (ending)

At dawn, the void mist burns away and the surviving attackers are killed or driven off. Bravers Guild wins its first Shiverglades incursion and receives a 48-hour Home and Hearth benefit that recognizes its settlement claim. Hal survives injured and reunites with Noth. Besal voluntarily returns control after helping defeat Rinbast's scarred counterpart, and their three Communions leave them as willing partners with deeper access to one another's memories and power. Hal inherits the dead counterpart's soul and abilities and has promised to free the other counterparts held by Rinbast. The victory does not restore everyone. Komachi's frightened burst has removed Ashera, Elora, Durvin, Vorax, and more than a dozen defenders to an unknown place. Noth intends to organize the search. Mira is alive after spending the gold dragon's scale power, though her instability within Aldim remains unresolved. The settlement has only a brief period to recover and repair, while the foreign Copper Coaltheel, the ancient council, Rinbast, and future Shiverglades attacks remain open threats.
