The second entry in the Star Force series opens as the alien Nano ships abandon Earth after brokering an uneasy truce with the Macros, leaving Kyle Riggs stranded and Star Force without its fleet. Riggs races to rebuild military strength from a hidden nanite factory before Earth governments, alarmed by Star Force's growing independence, move to seize the technology for themselves. As improvised laser defenses and a scrappy garrison hold off a covert assault by elite troops, Riggs must balance the demands of an approaching deadline to supply the Macros with troops, an uncertain command rivalry within his own ranks, and the urgent need to arm his people before conventional forces overrun the factory that is Star Force's only advantage.
