Meanwhile Ada, the preserved human intelligence controlling Myrnin's hidden portal system, grows jealous of Claire and turns malfunctions into targeted attacks. Claire and her friends find Kim, recover the secret recordings, and prevent the material from leaving Morganville. Claire and Myrnin then confront Ada and disable the dangerous system, forcing Myrnin to lose the consciousness of a woman he once loved. With the crises contained, Michael receives a genuine recording opportunity. Amelie permits Michael, Eve, Shane, and Claire to travel outside Morganville under strict terms, giving the reunited Glass House household a new destination beyond the town.

Previously: Claire Danvers learned that vampires rule Morganville and built a family at Glass House with Shane Collins, Eve Rosser, and Michael Glass. Michael became a vampire, while Claire served Founder Amelie and helped the unstable scientist Myrnin research a disease attacking vampire minds. Amelie's father Bishop invaded, killed Sam Glass, and took the town after a civil war and destructive storm. Claire accepted Bishop's mark to keep her friends alive but secretly joined Amelie's resistance. Working with Myrnin, Oliver, Hannah Moses, and hidden allies, she helped break Bishop's control and restore Amelie. Shane's father Frank, now a vampire, also aided the opposition. Amelie defeated and imprisoned Bishop, then resumed government in partnership with Oliver. Claire gained legal independence from her parents and chose to remain in Morganville. Claire, Shane, Eve, and Michael reunited at Glass House as the town began rebuilding.

Outside the laboratory, Eve introduces Claire to Kim, a bold filmmaker and performer who quickly becomes part of their social circle. Claire's suspicion of Kim shifts from her history with Shane to her current activities. Claire realizes that Kim's surveillance crisis and Ada's control of Morganville's internal network both turn private observation into power over other people. Myrnin must decide whether his attachment to Ada can justify leaving her in control.

Claire and the Glass House residents trace Kim and the hidden archive of vampire recordings. Recovering her requires cooperation from the same authorities and vampires she tried to document, while securing the footage becomes essential to prevent it from reaching the outside world. Kim's project is exposed as dangerous rather than harmless art, and Claire's original jealousy no longer matters beside the practical need to save her. Claire, Shane, Eve, and Michael recover Kim and bring her secret recordings under Morganville's control before the footage can expose the vampire population. The immediate threats from both surveillance and the portal network are contained, though neither resolution leaves the people involved untouched. Michael's music attracts a serious recording opportunity, and Amelie agrees to let him and his friends leave Morganville under controlled conditions. Glass House finishes the book together, preparing for a rare journey beyond the town.
