In short (whole book)

Erin rebuilds The Wandering Inn as a refuge and business while Ryoka undertakes a perilous delivery to Az'kerash and returns maimed from rescuing a young gnoll. Ceria, Pisces, Yvlon, and Ksmvr re-form the Horns of Hammerad, Pawn finds faith, and Rags unites local goblin tribes while resisting Garen's demand to attack Liscor. Erin's protection of goblins estranges Relc, and the destruction of Krshia's magical books leaves a vast debt to the Silverfang tribe. Toren's growing autonomy turns into rebellion when he abandons Erin and kills travelers on his way toward Liscor's dungeon. Ryoka secures a dragon's instructional magic tome for the gnolls and reunites with Erin in Octavia's city. Rags burns another city but spares fleeing civilians and marches north. The newly opened Liscor dungeon triggers warnings across the continent, while Flos begins a war and Az'kerash prepares an undead campaign and sends servants after Ryoka.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Erin, an innkeeper from Earth, established The Wandering Inn outside Liscor and built friendships among drakes, gnolls, Antinium, adventurers, and goblins. Ryoka, another Earth arrival, became a runner while deliberately refusing the classes and levels offered by this world. Erin's defense of people whom Liscor mistrusts made her inn a rare meeting ground, but also drew her into the city's dangers. An expedition into Liscor's ruins ended in catastrophe. Erin's allies defeated Skinner, while Ceria and Olesm survived by hiding in coffins. Erin, Ryoka, Pisces, Ksmvr, Toren, and Rags entered the ruins and brought them out, confirming that the other Horns of Hammerad had died. Ghazi then attacked Liscor to seize Erin and Ryoka. Erin blinded her central eye, forcing her retreat. Ryoka learned that the powerful mage who commissioned a delivery was secretly a dragon and that the recipient, Peril Chandler, was Az'kerash, the Necromancer. A magical phone chat also revealed that people from Earth were scattered across the world and had arrived at different times, but an outsider compromised the network. The existence, number, and possible route home of the displaced people remain unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Erin and Ryoka agree to share what they learn about the many people transported from Earth. Ryoka leaves to earn money for Ceria's ruined hand, while Erin works to make the inn profitable. Sudden winter brings frost fairies that Erin and Ryoka can perceive more clearly than most people. Erin's first building is destroyed when Toren brings explosive bark inside, but Antinium workers rebuild a larger inn closer to Liscor in exchange for access to chess. Ryoka obtains alchemical defenses from Octavia and accepts a dangerous delivery from a disguised dragon to Az'kerash. The dragon's magic obscures her memory of his identity, but the block is later broken. Erin succeeds with market food, hosts Ceria during her recovery, and discovers that the ruins extend into a much larger dungeon.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

Erin's magical chessboard connects her to an unknown distant opponent. Olesm is defeated, but Erin wins several close games. The opponent is Niers Astoragon, an extraordinarily powerful strategist, though Erin does not know who he is. Chess also becomes central to the Antinium effort to create individuals: workers ordered to play mostly fail, while Pawn's voluntary participation gives him a distinct identity. Ceria discovers that her skeletal hand can still move through magic. Toren continues hunting and growing stronger without telling Erin, while Rags turns away from dependence on the inn and begins conquering nearby goblin tribes. Erin shelters the exiled thief as an unwilling employee despite the anger of Krshia and other Silverfang gnolls. Toren secretly terrorizes the newcomer and interprets Erin's commands in ways she does not understand. Far away, Ghazi returns to Flos with her central eye still blinded. Flos's impoverished kingdom begins to rally around the awakened King of Destruction, joined by surviving members of the Seven and the Earth-born twins Trey and Therese. When the Empire of Sands sends him the severed head of one of his closest allies, Flos abandons restraint and declares war.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Violence at Erin's inn escalates when armed gnolls try to seize the former thief. Ceria, Pisces, and Toren defend Erin, two gold-rank teams enter the confrontation, and Erin's new aura stops the brawl long enough for the Watch to intervene. Ceria begins considering a new adventuring party rather than joining an established team. Rags defeats Garen and brings the Redfang tribe under her command. Garen warns that a Goblin Lord is gathering strength in the south. Ryoka, meanwhile, accepts aid from the frost fairies, crosses a battlefield, escapes military detention with Octavia's mixtures, and reaches Az'kerash's hidden castle. She completes the dragon's delivery and escapes only by drinking a haste potion whose speed she cannot control. Elsewhere, a group of about fifty Earth-born people summoned as heroes has been reduced to barely more than twenty. Richard leads the survivors, with Emily among their strongest combatants. During a demon raid, the depressed Clown Tom remains behind with a dying child. The death drives him into a violent pursuit of the raiders. He survives severely wounded, kills many attackers, and gains another Hero level because the frightened survivors now regard him as a hero. A demon lieutenant escapes.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

Pawn asks Erin how to face responsibility for other Antinium lives. Her account of faith, forgiveness, and an existence after death leads him to become an Acolyte with the skill Prayer. His new belief offers the Individuals a possibility beyond the Hive's customary understanding of death. Ceria, Yvlon, and Pisces decide to rebuild the Horns of Hammerad. Ksmvr arrives after losing an arm and being removed from his Antinium office. The four fight together during a goblin raid and then formally accept one another as teammates. Olesm cannot join because Liscor needs its strongest tactician against the approaching Goblin Lord, but a secretly planted map gives the Horns a possible northern expedition. Ryoka completes the rescue of a missing gnoll child, losing two fingers while escaping organized goblin soldiers. The frost fairies alter the outcome of the battle and carry Ryoka and the child away, but the child's fur turns white and her tribe is destroyed. Erin visits Magnolia Reinhart's estate and meets other Earth arrivals held under protection.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Ryoka returns to the inn with the traumatized white-furred gnoll child. Erin protects Rags and another hobgoblin as guests, leading Relc to leave and ending their friendship for the moment. Erin and Ryoka also fight over Magnolia's knowledge of Earth arrivals, but they apologize and renew their trust. The child remains at the inn because Ryoka and Erin do not trust Liscor to protect her from the stigma attached to white fur. Klbkch privately tells Ryoka that he knows she and Erin come from another world and has concealed it from his queen. He explains that the Antinium fled their homeland because a buried god was awakening. Ryoka proposes that accumulating levels across many classes slows future advancement, and Klbkch agrees to investigate the theory in secret. The insight is valuable but does not replace the Silverfang tribe's destroyed magical books or settle Erin's enormous debt. Rags reorganizes the Redfang tribe around food, scouting, training, and specialized work. Garen teaches her to fight but secretly values strength above her broader approach. He reveals that he killed former companions to claim a black key tied to a Goblin King's treasure, while refusing to let Rags pursue it.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

Erin experiments with magical ingredients gathered during a winter expedition. Toren, increasingly resentful of being treated as a tool, exploits the literal wording of her orders and abandons her more than one hundred miles north of Liscor. His binding prevents direct harm to Erin, but not manipulation or violence against others. He kills two travelers for money and heads toward Liscor's dungeon to gain strength. Erin survives wolves, a bear, and an attempted mugging before reaching a human city and Octavia's shop. Ryoka runs to the High Passes to ask the dragon to locate her. After failing to win his help through riddles, she simply pleads for Erin's safety. The dragon finds Erin alive, heals Ryoka, and agrees not to erase her memories. Ryoka trades a copied iPhone for an instructional magic tome intended for the Silverfang tribe, then is teleported directly to Octavia's shop and reunited with Erin. The book's history of the First Antinium War also reveals the cost of the Antinium crossing, their early conquests, the coalition that stopped them, and the disappearance of an entire allied army before peace. The old war helps explain the fear surrounding the Antinium and Magnolia's long military preparations.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Erin and Ryoka are safe together in Octavia's city, and Ryoka carries the dragon's instructional tome for the Silverfang tribe. It may become the valuable contribution the tribe needs, but the loss of its magical books and Erin's financial debt remain unresolved. Erin's unsafe experiments damage Octavia's shop, so Ryoka establishes basic rules and Octavia becomes her reluctant alchemical supervisor. Toren remains free, violent, and intent on reaching Liscor's dungeon. Rags captures and burns a city, but orders her goblins to let unarmed civilians flee. She uses the spoils to expand crossbow production, rejects Garen's demand to attack Liscor, and turns the force north toward larger goblin tribes. The Goblin Lord remains active, and nearby cities begin mobilizing. Az'kerash completes an enormous flying undead creature and sends two servants to find Ryoka because she escaped with knowledge of his castle. Magnolia Reinhart responds to attacks on the Earth arrivals under her protection while continuing her military preparations. At Liscor, a gold-rank team enters the dungeon after the Antinium expose its main entrance. The opening triggers exceptional danger warnings across distant regions, alerting Niers Astoragon and making the unknown dungeon the immediate regional threat.

How does it end? (ending)

Erin and Ryoka are reunited in Octavia's city after Toren strands Erin far north of Liscor. Ryoka brings an instructional magic tome obtained from the dragon, offering a possible answer to the Silverfang tribe's need for a worthy gift, though the enormous debt itself is unpaid. Erin remains responsible for the former thief and the white-furred gnoll child, and her alchemical experiments are now subject to Octavia's supervision. Toren has exploited his binding, abandoned Erin, killed two travelers, and set out for Liscor's dungeon. Rags captures and burns a city while ordering her force to spare unarmed people who flee. She rejects Garen's proposed assault on Liscor and marches north to join the larger goblin movement. At Liscor, adventurers enter the newly exposed dungeon, triggering exceptional danger alarms far away. Flos has declared war on the Empire of Sands, Magnolia Reinhart is consolidating Earth arrivals and military strength, and Az'kerash completes a flying undead war-beast while sending two servants to find Ryoka. The book ends with Erin and Ryoka together, but with their home, allies, and several expanding conflicts still exposed.
