In short (whole book)
A hostile Elder AI's signal alerts the ascended Elders and reactivates their control network. Bishop and Skippy escape Rindhalu territory, destroy the pursuing AI Echo, and seek Skippy's former allies, only for the Elders to erase those AIs with a factory reset. Skippy exploits the reset to destroy the new hostile AI population, but the same signal disables the Sentinel network and leaves Earth exposed. The crew locates Unit 333's hidden Elder ship, Alpha. Star Team Alpha captures its dock at devastating cost, including Smythe's death and catastrophic injuries to Frey and Adams. At the primary ascension site, Skippy offers an adaptable Elder permanent separation from this reality in exchange for restoring Valkyrie, the Flying Dutchman, and their crews. The bargain succeeds, the ascension machinery is permanently disabled, and Skippy blocks a final attempt to destroy the galaxy's wormholes. The surviving crews head toward Earth with Alpha while the external NGC 1023 threat remains unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Joe Bishop and the artificial intelligence Skippy led a human expeditionary force through repeated conflicts among the galaxy's senior species. Their operations gave humanity access to Elder technology, control over parts of the wormhole network, and the appearance of protection by a damaged Sentinel near Earth. Much of that deterrence depended on secrets and bluffs. The Maxolhx Hegemony entered a civil war, while the Rindhalu sought to preserve the larger balance of power. Bishop's allies included Jennifer Simms aboard Valkyrie, Smythe and Star Team Alpha, Chang and Nagatha aboard the Flying Dutchman, the Mavericks under Perkins, and the Jeraptha officer Scorandum. Skippy had also learned that the ancient Elders left behind powerful artificial intelligences whose original mission was to suppress emerging biological civilizations. His own rebellion against that mission and his later development among humans made him an exception among Elder AIs. Immediately before this book, the crew confronted another hostile Elder AI. Its actions threatened to expose humanity's deceptions and reconnect the present galaxy with the ascended Elders.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
A damaged hostile Elder AI dies after using a wormhole power feed to send a distress pulse beyond normal reality. The Elders acknowledge the signal, leaving Skippy unable to predict whether they will issue remote commands or return physically. Valkyrie flees through Rindhalu territory, but the local wormhole network blames the ship for the disruption and denies it all passage. The crew cannot survive the long conventional flight to another network, and attempts to reach the network controller fail. Proposals for refuge beyond the galactic barrier also prove unworkable. Smythe responds with a piracy plan. Skippy suppresses the sensors of a Rindhalu star carrier while Star Team Alpha boards it and Frey's element seizes its primary control center. Valkyrie is attached to the carrier and powered down, allowing the captured vessel to carry it through the hostile network. Once clear, Bishop's crew returns the carrier and gives its captain the dead Elder AI canister. Valkyrie then passes normally through a different wormhole network. Bilby, restored after temporary storage inside Skippy, tells Bishop that Skippy is carrying severe guilt over the ancient AI war. Meanwhile, the Maxolhx rebellion expands and the Rindhalu covertly work to prevent either side from winning decisively.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
The Rindhalu are covertly supporting both sides of the Maxolhx civil war, seeking a prolonged struggle that preserves the Hegemony without driving either faction to Elder weapons. The fake Elder AI previously placed among the Maxolhx may soon be exposed by renewed research, so Bishop recruits Scorandum to stop Rindhalu assistance and protect the deception. Chang and the Flying Dutchman are recalled, with Nagatha assigned a central role in the operation. Separately, Bishop prompts Skippy to search his own matrix for an Elder control pathway. Skippy finds a concealed backdoor, blocks direct control through it, and begins using it for limited self-modification. With Bilby's help, he isolates an internal restriction module and can disclose more of the Elders' history. He explains that the galactic barrier was built after a signal from NGC 1023 supplied plans for a device that began constructing something larger. The barrier now blocks coherent communication and cannot serve as a safe bargaining tool. Then the Elder Collective becomes active. A creator-issued status command triggers hidden systems inside Skippy, shutting down Valkyrie and attacking Bilby until Bishop ejects an active communications node. After recovering, Skippy detects a message from another awake Elder AI whose allegiance and location are unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Bishop provisionally names the newly detected AI Echo. Simms prevents the group from assuming it is hostile before they identify it, while Skippy recovers evidence that his former ship deliberately left him on Paradise to survive the ancient war. At the same time, Nagatha activates concealed code during a clash between Maxolhx and Rindhalu forces. The deception makes each senior species believe the other has an Elder AI, prompting the Rindhalu to withdraw their ships and assistance from Maxolhx territory. Echo then reveals itself aboard an Elder starship and traps Valkyrie in a pursuit through successive jumps. It rejects Skippy's self-directed identity and exploits negotiations as cover for intrusion attempts. Skippy first sends Valkyrie several days into the future to evade the chase, but Echo finds the ship again with a tachyon search and immobilizes it near a wormhole cluster. Skippy redirects Echo's weapon through a micro-wormhole, then loops two larger wormholes around the Elder ship and collapses the isolated space containing it. Echo is destroyed. The victory reactivates a larger danger: restored Collective watch routines may awaken surviving Elder AIs within weeks. Skippy broadcasts for former allies, but hostile AIs now know he is active and may coordinate against him.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
When Collective relays restrict Skippy's access, Valkyrie recovers an endpoint communications device from an Elder wreck field despite nearby Rindhalu search groups. Reed pilots the ship close enough to draw the wreckage into a docking bay, restoring unfiltered access. Skippy calls for former allies and receives a reply from Unit 333, an AI he knew early in the ancient war. Because an enemy could impersonate an ally, the crew prepares a false Valkyrie debris field and arranges a cautious rendezvous. Before the meeting, the Elders send a kill command through Skippy's hidden programming. His firewall protects him, but he cannot extend the same defense to Unit 333. Valkyrie detonates the staged wreckage and waits for a second attack. Instead, the Elders factory-reset every Master Control AI. The reset erases the identities and memories of Skippy's surviving peers while leaving their machinery ready to awaken under its original anti-biological programming. Skippy alone resists. He then explains that his repeated escapes come from a limited ability to select favorable near-term probabilities, an ability acquired while rebuilding himself after Paradise. The galactic barrier performs a much greater version of that function for the Elders as a population, preventing choices that would seriously threaten them. Any successful plan must avoid triggering that protection.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
At Jaguar, Skippy admits that his limited probability selection could not reliably predict the later consequences of choices made during the power-booster raid. A different choice might have saved Fal Desai and reduced Margaret Adams's injuries, but Bishop accepts responsibility for prioritizing the mission. With extinction expected, Bishop prepares a false UNEF Command account that blames a hostile Elder AI and implies Maxolhx responsibility. Then he realizes the factory-reset AIs still contain both their original killer worms and accessible programming backdoors. Skippy can activate those worms through the Collective before the reset AIs develop new identities. Valkyrie recalls its crew and departs immediately, with Adams joining the Special Mission Group and learning the truth behind humanity's earlier bluffs. The plan has a severe consequence: the broad trigger will also disable every Sentinel, including Earth's damaged protector, exposing the planet and weakening the restraint on Elder weapons. The senior staff decides that allowing the reset AIs to awaken is worse. Skippy propagates the worm code with a delayed trigger, contains the copy that returns to him, and sends the irreversible activation signal. The Elders order the worms to stop, but their fail-safe design prevents deactivation. Early confirmations show the reset AI population is being destroyed.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
With the reset AIs dying and Earth's Sentinel likely falling, Valkyrie still lacks a defense against the Elders themselves. Skippy explains that ascended Elders require physical machinery in ordinary reality to return. Only one primary site and two backups remain. Destroying them could block a physical return without attacking the Elders' essential power system, but the sites are hidden and accept only Elder vessels. The probability field may permit such an operation, although Skippy cannot guarantee it. On Paradise, Perkins defends Nert Dandurf against blame for the apparent Elder AI theft, explaining that the AI disabled the team's equipment and deliberately selected Sergeant Jates. Bishop then uses location-dependent encryption in Unit 333's message to find that AI's concealed ship. The factory reset returned its ship AI to an unpaired state, creating a short window in which it may accept Skippy. The Flying Dutchman can transport the vessel near the primary ascension site, but pairing will alert the Collective and may trigger a remote kill command. Bishop redirects forces toward Earth and sends Perkins with the official claim that a hostile AI destroyed the Sentinel and humanity will replace it. Scorandum departs aboard a Jeraptha syndicate ship after completing his part in the Maxolhx deception. Chang, Nagatha, and the Dutchman join the Elder-ship operation.
Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)
Unit 333's ship is hidden inside an automated Elder dock defended by machines Skippy cannot directly control. When the ascension sites begin activating, Bishop sends all 17 members of Star Team Alpha into an immediate assault. Chief Ruiz, Lieutenant Ito, Gunnery Sergeant Nuftal, and other operators are killed. Frey loses part of one leg, Margaret Adams loses both legs and her left arm, and only three members survive. Smythe dies from brain injuries after learning the objective succeeded. Skippy takes the dock and recovers the Elder ship, which is designated Alpha. At the primary ascension site, two returning Elder scouts capture Bishop and appear to destroy Skippy, Valkyrie, the Flying Dutchman, and their crews. Skippy survives and reveals a threat capable of erasing the Elders before their protective probability field existed. Rather than pursue revenge, Bishop accepts a bargain with the adaptable scout: permanent separation from this reality in exchange for reversing entropy around the site. Valkyrie, the Dutchman, and their crews are restored, but the dock casualties remain dead and Adams remains severely injured. The Elder re-ascends, the primary machinery is permanently disabled, and the backup sites become useless. Skippy blocks the Elders' final attempt to destroy the wormhole network. The ships escape and head toward Earth with Alpha, while Earth's lost deterrent and the NGC 1023 receiver danger remain unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
The entropy reversal restores Valkyrie, the Flying Dutchman, and their crews after their apparent destruction, but it does not reach the Star Team Alpha casualties at the remote dock. Smythe, Chief Ruiz, Lieutenant Ito, Gunnery Sergeant Nuftal, and the other dead operators remain lost. Frey survives without part of one leg, and Margaret Adams survives the loss of both legs and her left arm. The adaptable Elder fulfills the bargain and re-ascends. The primary ascension machinery is permanently disabled, making the two backup sites useless and preventing the Elders from returning to this reality. Skippy also defeats their last attempt to reverse power through the wormhole network and devastate the galaxy. Bishop, Skippy, Simms, Chang, Nagatha, Bilby, and the restored crews escape before the site explodes. The Flying Dutchman carries Alpha as the group heads toward Earth. Earth has lost its Sentinel deterrent, though Guardian machines may offer partial protection, and its replacement-Sentinel claim remains a bluff. The physical galactic barrier still stands, but the probability protection associated with the unreachable Elders may no longer guard against the danger linked to NGC 1023. A receiver built inside the galaxy remains the principal open risk. Bishop and Skippy continue as partners.
