A powerful death wizard whose soul has entered the afterlife. An archangel tells him that returning to life requires control tokens from all twelve underworld realms.

Ember (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Kael's wife. Her absence from paradise leaves Kael uncertain whether she survived or died beyond the boundaries of his world.

Max (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Kael's friend. Like Ember, he is absent from paradise, so Kael cannot determine what happened to him after the crossing.

Gideon (Supporting)

Kael's estranged father and a powerful arch-wizard whose earlier choices left deep divisions between them.

The ruler who impersonates Ember inside a decades-long illusion designed to harvest Kael's power. Her bargain brands Kael. The imprisoned wizard's soul returns to her if the required token is not delivered, while Kael forfeits his own soul if he dies again.

A dwarven priest and brother of the stronghold's general. He heals the general with divine stone magic, then sends him away on a summoned golem while remaining behind during the collapse.

Draven’s brother and commander of the last dwarven host. He refuses to abandon fighters who cannot escape as the stronghold’s defenses fail.

The former Dead Sister's infant child, pursued by her mother's former order. Her mother says the child can consume souls.

the surviving dwarven commander (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

Leader of the remnants at the ruined dwarven seal. After losing family and fighters in the defense, he asks Kael to lead the war against the returned invaders.

the Aether's eternal inhabitant (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

The eternal inhabitant of the Aether who identifies Kael's bond with that realm and the intelligent spirit within his weapons. The inhabitant permits Kael to return to Talona while warning that his unsettled Aether energy can endanger others.

A mahala scout who shields and guides Kael after his return to life, helping him contain traumatic memories while leading him away from danger.

Tanner (Supporting)

A hungry Guttertown child who accepts a broken hand and further violence to protect his critically injured older sister.
