In short (whole book)
Kael dies and enters the afterlife, where collecting twelve realm tokens becomes his only route home. Demon bargains, a false paradise, and centuries of training leave him powerful but unstable when he returns to a living world that has experienced only about a year. Ember and Max survive, while ancient invaders attack the Animus Seals and manipulate regional wars. The Princess of Sethos becomes Queen Bael after retaking her city. Kael reunites with Ember and Max but nearly kills them under the influence of trauma and a demon toxin. The ancient ruler sacrifices Eva to open the final seal, freeing every imprisoned force and an old god. Ember becomes Fae high matriarch as the resistance divides among homeland defense, alliance-building, and a search for the lost people. Dominic escapes the invaders' betrayal, but his alchemist is captured. Kael fails to kill the ancient ruler, suffers a critical neck wound, and jumps to Ember for aid.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Kael became a powerful death wizard whose path drew him into conflict with the Dead Sisters, the ancient people, and rulers who feared his magic. Ember is his wife, Max his trusted friend, and Gideon his estranged father. An elven assassin carries an old obligation connected to the protection of death wizards, while the young half-elf Cassie previously received Kael's protection. Dominic owes Kael an oath after Kael saved his daughter, but the pirate captain also entered a transport agreement with the ancients. The former captive and healer who travelled with Kael became compromised through the Dead Sisters. Political conflict in Sethos displaced King Bael and left his daughter away from home. The dragonkin queen remains a powerful participant in the struggle over the seals. At the opening of this volume, Kael's allies and enemies must confront the consequences of his death.
Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)
Kael is dead, but an archangel pulls his soul into a contested region of the afterlife and explains a possible return. He must obtain control tokens from all twelve underworld realms. In the living world, the ancient commander admits arranging Kael's assassination and kills the Dead Sisters' leader, while Dominic postpones revenge to honor his transport agreement with the ancients. Ember escapes with Kael's body and saves the gravely wounded Max by transferring his injury into herself. Gideon and his party are held by the dragonkin after evidence shows they drugged Ember's group before pursuing Kael separately, although Gideon's role in the murder is still uncertain. The elven guardian preserves Kael's body and places it in a protected tomb. She then reveals that death wizards were created as weapons against the ancient enemy and that the Guardian Pact arose to control them. The old Animus Seals imprisoned the enemy, but activating those seals cost the participating death wizards their lives. One seal has already opened, making the dwarven and human seals likely targets. Ember and Max no longer accept the guardian's secrecy and decide to judge future choices for themselves.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Kael's apparent reunion with Ember and Max proves to be a demon queen's long illusion, maintained for decades to harvest his power. An imprisoned historic death wizard helps him recognize the deception. Kael defeats their captor and bargains for the wizard's soul, but must deliver another token in the living world or surrender both her soul and his own. The queen brands and poisons him before sending them onward. His new companion restores her strength, trains him to shape the innate magic of death wizards, and explains that her ancient catastrophe began as an attempt to reinforce failing seals. Kael also learns that Cassie is alive, allowing Ember to identify the girl as the elven guardian's presumed-dead daughter and to learn that Kael was framed for a massacre. A competing demon lord gives Kael five tokens under terms that conflict with his first bargain. After more than a century of subjective time, Kael rescues his companion from a heavenly prison and obtains the authentic token set needed to reach the Tree of Life. Meanwhile, the Princess of Sethos, her lady-in-waiting, and a vampire escape Arkham Zul with pirate assistance and begin a dangerous journey toward a kingdom nearing civil war.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Ten months after Kael's death, Ember is sheltered in a southern kingdom while a neighboring emperor threatens war and pressures her to marry him. A former companion seeks sanctuary with her newborn daughter, but Ember rejects her account because of her Dead Sisters connection. The emperor uses peace talks to launch an invasion alongside an ancient matriarch who suppresses Ember's and the guardian's active magic. Max reveals that he is true demonkind and joins the defense. The southern rulers and Ember are captured, but a white dragon and dragonkin reinforcements break the immediate siege. Eva arrives as Fae High Matriarch and identifies herself as Ember's mother. The ancient invasion then turns toward the dwarven stronghold. Draven saves his wounded brother but remains behind as the defense collapses. The invaders open the dwarven Animus Seal and release corrupted creatures, while a former Dead Sister kills a pursuer and flees with her soul-consuming infant. In the afterlife, Kael activates his collected tokens at the Tree of Life. His death-wizard companion stays behind against pursuing demons, and Kael escapes into life despite refusing to abandon the bargain that binds them. The Tree of Life is left split and contaminated.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Kael passes through the Aether and awakens in a buried crypt. Although centuries passed for him after death, only about a year has elapsed in the living world. He learns that his weapons contain an intelligent spirit and that his return has made him immortal but not invulnerable. In Elnore he meets the Princess of Sethos and her companion, who initially know him only as a hunter called Spook. They survive pursuit together and cross the Black Chasm, after which Kael gains the Black Ark's healing armor while learning that a lasting answer to the seal crisis may require finding the lost people. The three enter Corinth through a hidden route during the coup. They find King Bael dying from an assassin's toxin. He charges his daughter to reclaim the throne and asks Kael to free Gideon and Kassik. Kael protects the princess from another poisoned blade, and she awakens the Citadel's gargoyles to destroy the usurper's faction. After her father's death she becomes Queen Bael. Elsewhere in Guttertown, Tanner steals one of Kael's black crystals to save his injured sister. The attempt revives and transforms her with volatile magic, and the siblings escape after she rejects recruitment by the Broken Blades.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Kael bargains with the dragonkin queen for Gideon's release. In return, he must take the queen's heir and six preserved royal eggs into a faster-time dimension so the heir can mature and restore the royal line. Kassik's release is deferred until that mission succeeds. Once Gideon is freed, Kael nearly kills him, stopping only when Gideon says Ember and Max survived. Kael brings him south for answers. Ember's allies hear that a mature death wizard restored Queen Bael, then see a hooded wizard break an invading shield. The ancient commander traps Ember's group with magic-suppressing pendants and a damaged white-magic wielder. Kael arrives and identifies himself, but an assassin interrupts the confrontation. Kael initially believes Ember and Max are further illusions. Under pressure from the demon toxin and his trauma, he kills the assassin and an ancient wizard by consuming their souls, then turns on Ember and wounds her. The elven guardian incapacitates him. After allies stabilize Ember, Kael confirms that the guardian once lived as the goddess of assassins. He nearly attacks Ember again during a memory episode, but she restores his awareness. The spirit in Kael's blades removes their harmful magic from her wounds, and the group turns toward the endangered human seal.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Corinth is attacked by corrupted dragon-like creatures. Gideon and the dragonkin defenders help repel them, after which the ancient ruler appears and presents her people as allies. This public intervention gives the invaders political cover. At another gate, ancient forces take Eva captive by threatening civilians. Kael's group reaches the human Animus Seal, but the ancient ruler arrives with Eva and explains that the Fae matriarch's blood can collapse the sepulchre. Reinforcements overpower the defenders, and Eva is killed on the seal. The sepulchre collapses, every Animus Seal is now open, and the newly released forces drain Kael's magic into binding stones. Kael draws on the death accumulated in the nearby forest, turns its creatures against the invaders, and wounds their ruler, forcing her withdrawal. The broken seal also releases a living man from the Aether. With the elven guardian translating, the group identifies him as the creator and father of the old gods. Ember has lost her mother, the invaders are fully released, and Kael's allies gain an ancient figure who may understand their enemy.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Kael reunites with the vampire ally and joins a plan to keep the released old god from enemy control. Queen Bael publicly grants the invaders sanctuary in Corinth while privately seeking cooperation with the southern kingdom. She sends Gideon south under a master wizard's command. Kael rejects an immediate assault on the invaders' defended stronghold, arguing that the resistance first needs intelligence. By the time his group reaches the Black Chasm, Dominic has already carried the invaders to their homeland. The old god explains that they seek the original magic taken from them and warns that large underground forces remain. The resistance divides its work: Ember will gather armies and defend the Fae homeland after being chosen as its new high matriarch, while Kael, the old god, and the vampire will seek the lost people. Dominic anticipates betrayal at the landing and uses his prepared cannon ships to destroy or scatter the shore force, allowing his fleet to escape. The ancient ruler nevertheless captures his alchemist. In Corinth, Kael attempts to assassinate the ancient ruler but is trapped by a ward and suffers a severed neck artery. He wounds her before she escapes, then uses the shutdown of the city's anti-magic field to jump to Ember, critically injured and seeking help.
How does it end? (ending)
All Animus Seals have fallen, and the ancient invaders have reached their homeland with their underground forces still available. Their ruler survives Kael's attack and has captured Dominic's alchemist, giving the invaders access to a weapons specialist even though Dominic's cannon fleet escaped. Kael is alive and reunited with Ember and Max, but the demon queen's mark, her toxin, his conflicting token bargains, and centuries of trauma remain unresolved. After the ancient ruler kills Eva, Ember becomes Fae high matriarch and leaves to defend the Fae homeland. Queen Bael rules Sethos while publicly accommodating the invaders and covertly seeking resistance allies. Gideon has been released and sent south under another wizard's command, but Kassik's freedom still depends on Kael completing the dragonkin succession bargain. Kael, the released old god, and the vampire ally intend to seek the lost people for knowledge against the invaders. Kael ends the book critically wounded after jumping to Ember for help.
