A comfortably settled farmer in the village of Ham who becomes a local hero almost by accident. He owns an old blunderbuss, has more practical sense than courtly polish, and proves increasingly unwilling to let either kings or monsters take advantage of him.

Giles's talkative and easily alarmed dog. Garm notices danger early and loudly urges his master to act, though his confidence depends heavily on how far away the danger is.

A huge but not very perceptive wanderer who strays into the fields around Ham. A chance blast from Giles's antiquated gun drives him away and gives Giles a heroic reputation the farmer did not seek.

A wealthy, cunning dragon who comes to the Middle Kingdom after hearing the giant describe its easy pickings. He is formidable when unopposed but quick to bargain when Giles confronts him with a sword dragons fear.

The ruler of the Middle Kingdom, fond of ceremony and eager to benefit from Giles's reputation. He gives the farmer an old sword without understanding its value and later expects to control the dragon's promised wealth.

The educated village priest, able to read the old inscriptions and histories that others cannot. He identifies Giles's sword and supplies the learning that helps the villagers understand the dangers facing them.
