Farmer Giles of Ham recap

Farmer Giles of Ham accidentally drives away a trespassing giant with an old blunderbuss and is celebrated as a hero. The king rewards him with an overlooked sword that proves to be Caudimordax, a weapon feared by dragons. When Chrysophylax attacks the district, Giles uses the sword to force the dragon to promise restitution. The dragon initially brings only a token payment, and the king attempts to take control of both the hunt and the reward. Giles pursues Chrysophylax, compels him to yield his full hoard, and returns with the dragon obedient to him. Rather than hand the treasure to the king, Giles defies the royal force, shares wealth locally, and founds the Little Kingdom around Ham. Chrysophylax later purchases his release, while Giles becomes a prosperous and effective ruler.

A giant wanders onto Farmer Giles's land near Ham. Warned by his dog Garm, Giles fires an old blunderbuss; its scattered shot surprises the giant, who leaves believing the farmer has used a powerful weapon. Giles is acclaimed throughout the district and receives an old sword from the king. The parson discovers that it is Caudimordax, a famous dragon-killing blade. The giant's account attracts Chrysophylax, a treasure-rich dragon who attacks the region while the king's knights avoid confronting him. Giles, pushed into defending Ham, finds that the sword gives him mastery over the dragon and forces Chrysophylax to promise compensation. When the dragon pays only a fraction and the king claims the reward, Giles undertakes the pursuit himself. He reaches the dragon's home, secures the hoard, and returns with Chrysophylax in submission. Giles then refuses the king's demand for the treasure; the royal force will not challenge either the sword or the dragon. Giles uses his wealth and local support to become ruler of a new Little Kingdom centred on Ham. Chrysophylax eventually pays again for his freedom, and the old king loses authority as Giles's realm prospers.

When the king marches to claim the dragon's hoard, Giles meets the royal party with Chrysophylax under his command and refuses to surrender the treasure. The king's knights have no wish to test themselves against the dragon or Tailbiter, so royal authority gives way. Giles distributes enough wealth to secure the loyalty and prosperity of his neighbours, rewards the parson, and establishes his own rule over the country around Ham, which becomes the Little Kingdom. Chrysophylax eventually buys his freedom with an additional payment and returns home diminished but alive. Giles grows into a respected ruler, while the old king's power and territory decline. What began as an accidental encounter with a giant therefore ends with a farmer using courage, bargaining, and a legendary sword to replace a remote and self-interested monarchy with a local kingdom of his own.
