Grayson asks the grieving and professionally sidelined Honor Harrington to command its inexperienced First Battle Squadron. As she rebuilds the force, Lord Burdette and Marchant turn religious opposition to her into a conspiracy that sabotages a Sky Domes project, kills 82 people, and frames her company. Gerrick proves the collapse was deliberate, but an attack on Honor's pinnace kills him, Sutton, and Hanks. A captured attacker confesses, and Honor kills Burdette in a lawful champion's duel. Haven's diversionary offensive has meanwhile drawn much of Grayson's strength away, opening Yeltsin to Operation Dagger. Still injured, Honor conceals her six superdreadnoughts among lighter ships, destroys Thurston's first force, and uses electronic decoys to make Theisman's second force withdraw. Grayson publicly honors her, though Mueller and an unnamed senior steadholder remain concealed participants in the domestic plot, and the wider war continues.

Previously: Honor Harrington is both a Royal Manticoran Navy officer and a steadholder on Grayson, where she helped defend the system during its war with Masada. Her treecat Nimitz shares an unusually strong empathic bond with her. A People’s Navy captain took part in the earlier attack on Grayson but resisted Masadan demands during the final assault and later sought asylum. Honor's partner, Paul Tankersley, has been murdered. After Honor killed a peer in a duel, the Royal Manticoran Navy placed her on inactive half-pay. Grayson's Protector, Benjamin Mayhew IX, is pursuing reforms that reduce traditional steadholder power, while the war between Manticore and Haven continues.

So far this book: A Havenite ambush at Nightingale costs Earl Whitehaven ships and demonstrates that the enemy has adapted to the advantages held by Manticore. Grayson expects Manticoran capital units to be withdrawn from Yeltsin and lacks enough experienced officers to command its own expanded navy. Wesley Matthews therefore asks Honor to accept a Grayson commission. Honor is still struggling with grief and doubts her fitness to take responsibility for more lives. At the same time, organized demonstrators challenge her legitimacy as Grayson's first female steadholder and as a foreign noncommunicant. Lord Burdette and Brother Marchant support the religious opposition. Marchant disrupts the dedication of Harrington City's successful new dome, but Honor answers him publicly and prevents the crowd from killing him. Grayson's church leadership promises discipline. Matthews argues that Honor's experience is indispensable, and she accepts command of First Battle Squadron as a Grayson admiral, with the refitted superdreadnought GNS Terrible as her flagship.

So far this book: Haven's rulers approve Operations Stalking Horse and Dagger, a coordinated plan meant to divert Alliance forces before striking a less protected objective. On Grayson, the church removes Marchant from office, but Burdette rejects its authority and keeps the dispute alive. Honor joins GNS Terrible and learns that her flag captain formerly served in the People’s Navy and took part in the earlier attack on Grayson. The officer explains his asylum and later service to Grayson, while Mercedes Brigham provides evidence that he opposed the abuse of prisoners. Honor does not yet fully trust him but agrees to judge his conduct and competence. Her new squadron has six superdreadnoughts but remains short of training and completed trials. With Manticore preparing to remove most of its remaining wall-of-battle ships from Yeltsin, Honor must make the force operational quickly. Admiral Thurston’s own delays threaten the timing of Dagger, whose success depends on Stalking Horse drawing defenders away.

So far this book: Exercises expose weaknesses in Honor's inexperienced squadron, but they also demonstrate initiative. Alfredo Yu uses a concealed coordination plan to defeat Rear Admiral Yanukov's simulated attack, strengthening Honor's professional respect for him. Burdette and Marchant meanwhile seek allies among conservative steadholders. John Mackenzie rejects action outside the law, while Samuel Mueller remains receptive to stronger resistance. The opposition finances protests and presents its arguments through more respectable supporters, making Honor the central target of resistance to Benjamin's reforms. Haven then launches Stalking Horse against lightly defended rear systems. Esther McQueen attacks Minette, other forces strike elsewhere, and the local Manticoran defenders can only delay and evacuate. In response, Matthews sends Grayson and Manticoran units toward a counteroffensive around Casca, Kandor, and Minette. Honor stays behind at Yeltsin with her less-seasoned squadron. Burdette openly challenges church authority, while Samuel Harding, working under a false identity, secretly misaligns foundations so a Sky Domes structure will eventually fail.

So far this book: Havenite scouts see the Alliance concentration at Casca and report that Yeltsin appears to have lost its wall-of-battle strength. At Mueller, a school dome collapses during construction and kills 82 people, including 30 children. Initial inspections blame defective ceramicrete and place responsibility on Sky Domes, exposing Honor to financial ruin, political removal, and intense personal guilt. Burdette, Marchant, and Mueller privately treat the deaths as the intended result of their plan. Adam Gerrick and Howard Clinkscales find that approved materials were delivered and begin reconstructing the failure. Their analysis shows that selected supports were deliberately weakened and that all suspicious footings trace to one bore operator. While Operation Dagger prepares to exploit the apparent weakness at Yeltsin, Honor becomes incapacitated by guilt and nightmares. Gerrick finally tells her the collapse was sabotage rather than negligence. The false employee Lawrence Maguire is identified as Samuel Marchant Harding, Marchant's cousin. The evidence establishes a coordinated murder conspiracy, though it does not yet prove the full chain of responsibility.

So far this book: Benjamin uses an old constitutional provision to open a secret treason inquiry and delay Honor's near-impeachment without warning the conspirators. Mueller privately confirms his role and prepares leverage against Burdette. Marchant and Burdette learn enough about the inquiry to identify Gerrick and Honor as threats, then arrange to kill them. As Operation Dagger departs for Yeltsin, Edward Martin and Austin Taylor enter Harrington Space Facility in forged uniforms and fire a missile at Honor's arriving pinnace. Honor, Nimitz, LaFollet, and Arthur Yard survive, but the strike and a later fuel explosion kill Adam Gerrick, Jared Sutton, and many rescuers. Nimitz kills Taylor when the attackers approach the wreckage. Reverend Hanks shields Honor from Martin's gunfire and is killed. Martin is captured and, realizing how he was manipulated, gives a confession to church and civil authorities. Benjamin publicly reveals the sabotage and assassination plot. Honor accuses Burdette, who admits the crimes but invokes trial by champion. Despite her injuries, Honor serves as Benjamin's champion and kills Burdette in the sword duel.

So far this book: Before Honor can recover from the attack and duel, more than 160 Havenite contacts enter Yeltsin. She assumes command of the local defense with only six superdreadnoughts and a collection of lighter ships. Honor recognizes that the earlier rear-area attacks were meant to pull away Grayson's stronger forces. She advances rather than remain by the forts, concealing her ships of the wall inside a disorderly formation made to resemble battlecruisers. Thurston accepts the deception and divides his force, sending Theisman's Force Zulu away while Force Alpha continues toward Grayson. At close range Honor reveals the superdreadnoughts and destroys most of Force Alpha, including Thurston and his flagship. Her own force loses GNS Glorious and six battlecruisers, while several surviving superdreadnoughts are heavily damaged and Rear Admiral Trailman is killed. Theisman turns back, believing Honor may now be vulnerable. Honor advances to meet him despite the likely cost. She then projects eight false superdreadnought reinforcements behind Force Zulu. Lepique orders withdrawal, and Theisman retreats toward the hyper-limit, ending Operation Dagger.

Honor has defeated the attempt to seize Yeltsin. Thurston is dead, his main attack force has been destroyed, and Theisman's surviving force is withdrawing after Honor's electronic bluff. Grayson's losses are serious, including GNS Glorious, six battlecruisers, and Rear Admiral Trailman, while several remaining superdreadnoughts require major repairs. The conclave unanimously recognizes Honor as a heroine and asks Benjamin to add crossed swords to her Star of Grayson. Sky Domes is publicly cleared of responsibility for the Mueller deaths, and compensation for the false accusations gains support. The visible branch of the conspiracy has been broken: Burdette and Taylor are dead, Martin has confessed, and Marchant is eliminated by agents of a senior steadholder. That senior steadholder remains a concealed organizer, however, and protects himself by removing witnesses while publicly reversing his former opposition. Mueller also remains implicated. Honor survives with Nimitz, Yu, Brigham, LaFollet, Benjamin, and Matthews, but she is injured and exhausted, her squadron is damaged, and the wider war with Haven remains unresolved.

Honor survives the attempt to destroy both her standing and her life, but Gerrick, Sutton, and Hanks die in the attack on her pinnace. Martin's confession exposes Burdette, and Honor kills Burdette while serving as Benjamin's champion. She then returns to command before recovering from her injuries. Her concealed superdreadnoughts destroy Thurston's main attack force, and false reinforcements persuade Lepique to order Theisman's surviving force away from Yeltsin. Honor ends the book exhausted, injured, and acclaimed by Grayson, while her squadron is badly damaged. Nimitz, Yu, Brigham, LaFollet, Benjamin, Matthews, and Theisman survive. The Haven-Manticore war continues. Mueller remains implicated, and an unnamed senior steadholder has hidden his own role, eliminated Marchant and other witnesses, and publicly joined the movement to compensate Sky Domes.
