The second entry in the Bobiverse series follows the self-replicating AI Bob and his many copies as they juggle the survival of two very different communities: the Deltans, a primitive species Bob has quietly protected on the planet Eden, and the human colonists now settling the harsh world of Vulcan after fleeing a dying Earth. As Bob helps the Deltans defend against local predators and slowly uncovers evidence of a devastating, unidentified threat that once nearly wiped them out, other Bob copies scouting distant systems find entire civilizations erased and stripped of resources by an unknown force called the Others. Back on Earth, a radical faction escalates attacks on the planet's collapsing food supply even as evacuation efforts continue, and Bob must weigh how much intervention he can justify before his help does more harm than good to the people he has chosen to protect.
