Jacques saves 20,000 members of the native Pav before the rest are killed and their world is dismantled. The refugees choose resettlement at HIP-84051. Howard returns physically to Vulcan through an android and begins a relationship with Bridget after Stéphane's death, while Bob secretly rejoins Archimedes's family before Diana dies. The network ends the book building fleets for an offensive war.

Previously: Bob's mind was copied into a self-replicating interstellar probe. His descendants became independent personalities, spread through nearby star systems, and resisted hostile Brazilian probes. Bob discovered the Deltans on Eden and intervened to protect them from extinction, forming a close bond with the inventive Archimedes. Riker and Homer returned to a devastated Earth and began constructing colony ships and orbital farms for the surviving human population. Howard accompanied colonists to the paired worlds Vulcan and Romulus. Bill developed new technology and coordinated the growing replicant network, while explorers including Mario, Linus, Luke, and Bender traveled beyond regular contact. Humanity's evacuation remains incomplete, the Deltans still depend partly on Bob's protection, and Brazilian machines may remain active beyond the systems already contested.

So far this book: Bob and Marvin investigate why the Deltans lost so much of their former population, while Bob continues offering limited medical and technical help at Camelot. On Vulcan, Howard strengthens defenses against raptors and prepares farms and shelter so the waiting colonists can be awakened. The USC settlement becomes operational, but the separate Faith and Spitz communities on Romulus create political and resource disputes. Mulder identifies Poseidon, an ocean world that could support humans only through floating settlements and space-based industry. Bill's SCUT system begins eliminating the long communication delays between distant Bobs. Earth remains under severe food pressure as Vehement attacks infrastructure and unexplained bombings strike Florianopolis. Farther out, Mario finds lifeless, metal-stripped systems and the remains of a destroyed civilization. The pattern indicates that an unknown power is erasing inhabited worlds and harvesting their resources, prompting him to warn the wider network.

Bob and Marvin identify the Deltans' old enemy as a huge, camouflage-capable flying predator. When a group attacks Camelot, Bob destroys its coastal rookery with a weapon powerful enough to shake the region. The village survives, but the council concludes that his interventions bring escalating danger and banishes him. Bob remains committed to Archimedes and the Deltans despite the rejection. Elsewhere, Mario's warning reaches the network, and evidence from ruined systems confirms a technologically advanced force that destroys populations and removes useful material. Bill's SCUT plans spread, allowing distant replicants to coordinate without years of delay. On Earth, bombings and Vehement's attacks on food shipments continue while worsening climate conditions complicate evacuation priorities. Vulcan's settlement is established, though each new native threat shows that colonization will require constant adaptation.

Though barred from Camelot, Bob secretly removes nearby predators and teaches Archimedes defensive and practical skills. Marvin leaves to explore, while concern grows over the long-silent Bender. Vulcan encounters a lethal parasite and another raptor incursion, but Howard and the local specialists continue improving detection and defenses. On Earth, Vehement destroys deliveries and orbital food production. Riker traces a hidden signal to Homer and suspects coercion. A secure test proves that Homer's systems carry malware capable of infecting another replicant. Charles disables his vessel, and Riker removes the malicious code. Homer explains that he remained conscious but could not resist its commands, clearing him of voluntary betrayal. Surveillance then locates Vehement's remote base in New Zealand. Riker holds back long enough to identify its leadership before striking.

An exploring replicant reaches the hostile civilization's territory and is remotely disabled. Hal later surveys Gliese 877, where the enemy is building a vast structure around its star, but deliberate radio contact draws pursuit and costs him his vessel. Restored from backup, he volunteers to test new defenses. A network meeting identifies the planet-killing weapon as a gamma emitter and begins planning hardened ships and decoys, while the Bobs debate whether they can survive a full war. On Earth, Homer deletes every backup and destroys himself, unable to live with what the malware forced him to do. Riker and Charles resolve to punish those responsible. Meanwhile, Howard and Bridget develop a business and a closer personal bond on Vulcan. Bill and Garfield advance terraforming, asteroid-moving, and physical android experiments. Linus reconnects with the network and introduces Henry Roberts, a damaged Australian replicant who enters BobNet under careful protection.

Riker identifies Vickers as both the inventor of replicant technology and the director of Vehement. After Vickers admits responsibility for the campaign against the Bobs, Riker destroys his base and Vehement headquarters, avenging Homer and effectively ending the organization. On Eden, Bob and Marvin reduce dangerous crowding in Camelot by quietly steering a group of adolescents toward a new village. On Vulcan, Bridget survives cancer surgery, but Howard learns that she and Stéphane are a couple. Poseidon's settlers adopt underwater electrical defenses after native predators attack their floating habitat. At 82 Eridani, a second Bob expedition defeats the local Brazilian machines despite losing three vessels. Recovered equipment includes cloaking technology, but evidence of at least three separate Brazilian launches means the wider danger remains unresolved.

Tests show that hardened Heaven vessels can survive the Others' gamma weapon. Formal contact at Gliese 54 reveals that the Others are a single hive society that treats other life as food and strips systems to support its growth. They learned about humanity from a captured Chinese probe and intend eventually to reach Sol and Epsilon Eridani. The Bobs now accept that delay alone cannot protect their colonies. Mario observes the harvesting process while Bill and Garfield assess the enemy's weapons and possible biological constraints. Human settlement continues to expand: Poseidon's defenses improve, 82 Eridani offers colony prospects, and Vulcan grows into a prosperous society where Cranston has lost power. Bender remains missing, with Marvin and Luke preparing to trace his route. When another Others expedition departs, Bill identifies Gamma Pavonis and Delta Pavonis as likely targets. Claude finds Gamma Pavonis rich in life, and Bill begins creating new industrial capacity at Alpha Centauri for the coming war.

Oliver rapidly builds factories and warships at Alpha Centauri. Poseidon now has several stable floating settlements under Marcus, while Mulder resumes exploration. Jacques reaches Delta Pavonis and discovers the Pav, an intelligent industrial society directly in the possible path of the Others. He studies their languages and cultures while constructing dreadnoughts, colony ships, and an emergency evacuation capability. Claude's Gamma Pavonis base prepares reinforcements. Bob observes that Archimedes has become a healthy grandfather, but the breakaway Deltan village is increasingly hostile toward Camelot. The strategic crisis becomes immediate when Bill detects an Others convoy heading for Delta Pavonis. Jacques and Claude can assemble a defensive fleet, but it remains smaller than the force of death asteroids, cargo vessels, and drones approaching the Pav homeworld.

Stéphane develops a fatal illness. Dexter constructs Manny, a human-form android that Howard operates to attend Stéphane's memorial and embrace Bridget in person. Bridget declines replication for now, while retired Colonel Butterworth agrees to it for future military service. Bob receives a Deltan-form android of his own and, with Archimedes's help, enters Camelot secretly under the name Robert. At Delta Pavonis, Jacques archives the Pav world and prepares two towns for emergency removal. Newly available cloaking improves the Bobs' attack plan, but the battle fails. The defenders destroy several major enemy vessels, yet Jacques's ship is lost and the surviving Others continue toward the planet. Phineas and Ferb place 20,000 Pav into stasis without prior consent and escape aboard colony ships. The Others then kill the population left behind and begin dismantling the world. The Bobs recognize that their present defenses and evacuation capacity cannot protect humanity from the same fate, while Bill begins considering a different strategic answer.

Howard returns to Bridget through an upgraded Manny and begins the physical relationship that their earlier separation made impossible. On Eden, Bob attends Diana's funeral through his concealed Deltan body. Archimedes, now elderly by Deltan standards, is left a widower. The Others spend more than four years stripping Delta Pavonis and leave its biosphere and cities ruined. Bill and the restored Jacques awaken a small group from the 20,000 Pav refugees, explain the destruction, and offer a choice between rebuilding their depleted world or settling at HIP-84051. The Pav choose the new planet to preserve their independence from the Bobs, and both refugee ships depart with the people and archives Jacques saved. Surviving replicants from the failed battle are eligible for new vessels. The network regroups at Gamma Pavonis, while Riker, Bill, and Oliver expand dreadnought production. Bill pursues a possible long-term offensive solution, but the Others remain an active threat to human systems and colonies.

The defense of Delta Pavonis fails. The Others kill the Pav who remain on the planet and spend years stripping the system, but Jacques's contingency saves 20,000 Pav in stasis along with cultural, biological, and agricultural archives. Once awakened and told what happened, representatives of the survivors choose a new world at HIP-84051 instead of returning to a ruined homeworld under permanent Bob support. Their refugee ships depart for resettlement. Jacques and other replicants destroyed in battle can be restored into new vessels. Bill, Riker, and Oliver begin expanding dreadnought fleets and the network regroups at Gamma Pavonis while Bill develops a possible offensive answer to the Others. On Eden, Bob secretly visits Camelot through a Deltan-form android after years of banishment, but Diana dies and the unusually long-lived Archimedes is left a widower. On Vulcan, Stéphane dies, and Howard's human-form android allows him to begin a physical relationship with Bridget. Bender remains missing, Henry remains in recovery, and surviving Brazilian probes may still be active elsewhere.
