In short (whole book)
After finishing Nats Park's local Naga campaign, Drew establishes new node infrastructure and leads Sarah, Daryl, Luke, Gary, Bill, and Clive toward Arlington. The expedition clears route dungeons, crosses a ruined Potomac under attack from animated monuments, encounters a lich's undead army, and loses Clive in Arlington Cemetery. At the Air Force Memorial, Drew claims a node and reunites with Lincoln and Zoe, now the intelligent leader of transformed dogs. The party enters Great Grove and discovers a survival alliance between humans and fae. When the lich attacks, Drew commands the defense. Clive returns as an undead sniper and critically wounds Gary, but Drew forces Aeon awake, kills Clive and the army's other grave knight, and breaks the siege before collapsing. Luke carries him to safety. The Protectorate then identifies the lich as the Forgotten Servant and mobilizes a fleet, Hades, and Isis around Drew, whose awakened Retribution now requires atonement.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Earth has entered a system-driven transformation in which Xatherite grants extraordinary abilities and claimed nodes can support human settlements. Drew Michalik has become a Red Mage, the owner of the connected territory centered on Nats Park, and one of its strongest defenders. Sarah Rothschild, Daryl, Katie Sabin, JP, and Hoffacker help protect the stadium, while Luke, an off-world Protectorate combatant, watches over Drew. Robbi died before the present campaign, and Drew carries his blood-red sword. Drew has also received divine attention: Isis contacted him in a dream and suggested that his developing path could lead toward justice.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Drew's group begins with ten connected nodes and prepares to finish the local Naga campaign. Exhaustion finally forces Drew to sleep before he leads Sarah, Daryl, Luke, Katie, JP, and three teenage trainees into the Navy HR dungeon. Gary's danger sense proves valuable against psychic paper creatures, while London contributes ranged attacks and a numbing toxin. The party clears the dungeon and claims its node. An expanded force then attacks the Naga's flooded parking-garage stronghold. After heavy fighting, Drew's side kills the final guardian and claims the site as Naga Bane. The victory completes a twelve-node network and unlocks major infrastructure, including a command post, foundry, sensor augment, and communications options. The local Naga leadership is gone, but surviving members of the clutch have fled across the river and may establish themselves elsewhere.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
Nats Park's council converts one node into a command post, assigns the Navy HR node as a foundry, and designates Naga Bane for improved sensors. Political strain grows when Brady offers Sons of Liberty support but rejects military control. Drew agrees to assess the militia's rifleman Clive for an expedition toward the Pentagon. Hoffacker keeps Katie and JP at the stadium because their defenses and ammunition support are indispensable. Katie also admits that she can no longer bear expedition life, and she and Drew end their relationship while still caring for each other. Drew recruits healer Bill and teenage scout Gary alongside Sarah, Daryl, Luke, and Clive. A dream visit from Hades reveals that an alien seed ship has reached Earth and that Drew's unusual powers have attracted off-world attention. After Drew grants Hoffacker and Sarah command-post access, the seven-person expedition leaves Nats Park and reaches an underground node beneath a CVS.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
The CVS proves to be a protected puzzle dungeon that the combat-focused expedition cannot open, leaving a break in the intended node route. The team presses on to the FCC building and fights through an overgrown swamp dungeon. They kill its giant lamprey guardian, claim the FCC node, and distribute the recovered Xatherite. At the Jefferson Memorial, Drew's group destroys hook rollers and quickly defeats another guardian, gaining a second route node. With the Potomac bridges badly damaged, the party camps and trains. Clive's heavy drinking and argument with Bill expose a sharp divide over how much danger young survivors should face. When the expedition finally moves west, animated soldiers from the memorials ambush it. A gigantic Lincoln statue joins the pursuit. Drew separates from the others and draws the golems away so the group can cross toward Arlington.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Drew survives a running fight with the giant Lincoln statue and rejoins the injured expedition on the Arlington side, where the destroyed bridge prevents retreat. Daryl guides the party through a cemetery filled with undead, and Luke warns that a lich may be directing them. From the visitor center, Drew learns that Hoffacker has collapsed from exhaustion and that Nats Park faces a severe ammunition shortage. The party plans to seize the Air Force Memorial node as an Arlington staging point. During the night, Clive gets Gary drunk while on watch, then attracts undead by shouting. The group flees before dawn and its attacks alert the controlling power. Drew perceives the lich as a distant void while an undead entity advances through the haze. The expedition escapes the cemetery perimeter, but Clive disappears and Daryl cannot find him.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
Leaving the missing Clive behind, the party enters the Air Force Memorial dungeon. Drew and Luke descend through floating islands and discover that a hidden feathered serpent is preventing the claim. They kill the guardian, recover its Xatherite, and take control of the node. The expedition then visits Drew's old apartment in search of Lincoln and Zoe. Lincoln returns with two transformed dogs, including Sadie, and explains that the local pack has helped him survive. He leads the group to the dogs' refuge, where Zoe returns from a hunt. She is alive, greatly enlarged, apparently intelligent, and now leads the pack. The reunion answers Drew's personal search, but the neighborhood's other human groups vanished after the arrival of a nearby forest. Their location and their relationship to the fae remain unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
A mixed group of she visits the claimed node and summons Zoe, but she refuses its representative's request. The visitors leave an invitation for the Red Mage to meet their leader. Daryl scouts the country club settlement and finds nearly a thousand healthy humans working under fey supervision. Drew refuses a preemptive attack and sends companions inside to determine whether the humans are prisoners. A brownie guide later brings Drew and Luke into the community with Zoe's approval. Captain DeVos explains that the humans allied with the fae to survive, while factions within the war council remain divided over Drew. His reunited party finds that residents are fed, healed, protected, and expected to work, with no clear evidence of abuse. The grove leader then warns that Drew's passage through Arlington provoked an imminent lich-led assault. Drew agrees to defend Great Grove and takes overall command, with DeVos leading its human fighters.
Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)
A vast undead army and bone golems attack Great Grove. Drew's storms thin the assault, but the defenders' living barriers begin to fail. An explosive rifle shot knocks Drew from his position, and the grove leader catches him while Sarah heals the wound. Luke concludes that the missing Clive has become a grave knight who retains memories and some former abilities under the lich's control. Gary tracks two grave knights, one commanding the army and one hunting Drew as a sniper. When Gary helps locate Clive, an explosive attack leaves him critically wounded. Drew teleports Gary to the healers and forces Aeon to awaken despite extreme pain. With its power, he kills Clive using Robbi's sword, destroys much of the undead force, and kills the second grave knight. The army loses coordination and the siege breaks. Drew then collapses, and Luke reveals six wings as he flies Drew to safety.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Great Grove survives because Drew kills the grave knights directing the undead army, but the lich itself remains at large. Gary has been delivered to the settlement's healers with critical injuries, and Drew is incapacitated after forcing Aeon's full Retribution power awake. Luke carries him away from the battlefield. In an off-world command report, the Protectorate identifies the Arlington lich as the Forgotten Servant and concludes that the fae seed ship established Great Grove near Drew after detecting his settlement shield. The Protectorate regards Aeon's awakening as a major success and a violation for which Drew must atone. A Hellenic Red Mage's fleet is ordered to protect him until that process is complete. Isis is sent to facilitate the atonement, while Hades is assigned to capture and destroy the Forgotten Servant after Drew defeats it. The local battle is over, but these larger conflicts remain open.
How does it end? (ending)
Drew breaks the siege of Great Grove by forcing Aeon awake, killing Clive's grave-knight form and the second grave knight directing the undead army. The leaderless force loses its coordination, but the lich itself survives. Gary reaches the grove's healers with critical wounds, while Sarah, Daryl, Bill, Lincoln, Zoe, Captain DeVos, and the grove leader survive on the available account. Drew collapses under the pain and strain of the awakening, and Luke reveals six wings to carry him to safety. Off-world, the Protectorate identifies the lich as the Forgotten Servant. Drew's awakened Retribution is judged both an exceptional success and a legal violation. A Hellenic Red Mage's fleet is ordered to protect him until he atones, Isis is sent to assist with that process, and Hades is positioned to destroy the Forgotten Servant after Drew defeats it. Great Grove's alliance, the lich threat, the Naga survivors, and Nats Park's political and supply problems all remain unresolved.
