Free the Darkness

By Kel Kade

Rezkin grows up in an isolated fortress, trained since childhood in stealth, combat, and a rigid code of numbered rules, with little exposure to ordinary life. At nineteen he is sent into the wider world to discover the meaning of two still-unclear rules and his own purpose, but his departure is marked by violence at the fortress that leaves him searching for answers about his former masters' true intentions. Traveling toward the city of Kaibain, he takes on two companions, Frisha and Tam, whom he adopts as friends under his personal code, and begins interpreting his rule of protecting and honoring them in ways that unsettle those around him. His unusual skills soon draw him into conflict with local criminal guilds, whose leadership he moves to control through intimidation and force.
