In short (whole book)

Raised alone in a fortress, Rezkin completes his training only to be ordered into a lethal battle that destroys his former life. He leaves with two partly understood rules, extraordinary skills, royal-quality swords, and a pursuit of the escaped Striker Farson. In the outside world he accepts Frisha and Tamarin Blackwater as friends, protects and trains them, and secretly takes control of criminal guilds as the Raven. The travelers join Captain Jimson and Reaylin de Voss on the dangerous road to Kaibain, where General Marcum learns that the former king granted Rezkin sweeping authority. Frisha and Rezkin choose a prime courtship, but Marcum refuses consent and Rezkin will not override him. Before departing for the king's tournament, Rezkin brings the Razor's Edges, Kaibain's Diamondclaw guild, and the Black Hall under his command. The Black Hall warns that someone has ordered Marcum's death. Rezkin leaves for Scutton with his friends while Farson, Prince Thresson's disappearance, the fortress conspiracy, and a possible palace traitor remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Rezkin grows up alone in a fortress where mistakes bring punishment and every injury becomes instruction. By nineteen he has mastered combat, stealth, medicine, survival, and numerous other disciplines, yet he has almost no understanding of ordinary society. His masters announce that his training is complete, then a final order turns the fortress against itself. Rezkin kills the attacking strikers, Master Jaiardun and Master Peider die, and Striker Farson escapes. Peider's last words leave Rezkin with only fragments of the first two rules: friends must be protected and honored, and killing requires conscience. Rezkin departs to find Farson and discover his own purpose. In Justain, Frisha calls him a friend and Tamarin Blackwater reluctantly accepts his help escorting her to Kaibain. Rezkin interprets friendship as an absolute protective obligation. After encountering the city's thieves, he takes control of Diamondclaw, installs a new guildmaster, overthrows the Serpent leader, and appoints Adsden. Under the feared identity of the Raven, he orders both guilds to gather intelligence and brings their operations under his command while keeping this activity from Frisha and Tam.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Marquis Addercroft responds to the Raven's rise by seeking everyone connected to the unknown criminal leader. Rezkin learns that Addercroft raped and murdered a visiting nobleman's daughter and that the dead Serpent leader left evidence of the crime. He infiltrates a bank vault, gives the confession to Addercroft's son Ruald, and reveals to Ruald that he is both the criminal leader and a lawful sword bearer. Ruald chooses to tell the victim's family, and Addercroft dies in an apparent suicide. Rezkin, Frisha, and Tam then leave Justain by river with soldiers led by Lieutenant Jimson. Rezkin begins teaching his friends to fight, while Frisha's attraction to him strengthens and Tam remains wary of Rezkin's unexplained past. A wrecked boat proves to be a brigand ambush, forcing the travelers onto the road. During a night attack, Rezkin protects the camp and Jimson verifies his crown-issued certificate of authority. Rezkin also learns that the king's tournament may draw the elite covert forces connected to his upbringing. He decides to enter, hoping to learn why he was trained and whether his former masters served or opposed the kingdom.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

At Lorelis, reports describe growing attacks, rebel activity, the death of King Bordran, and the disappearance of Prince Thresson, though suspicions involving King Caydean remain unproven. Reaylin de Voss joins the party to demonstrate her fitness for military service. Frisha explains that General Marcum, her uncle, intends to name her his heir. She kisses Rezkin, and both plan to continue together toward the tournament. Rezkin secretly intercepts a report about himself while learning that another striker is investigating the missing prince. Friction grows as Reaylin pursues Rezkin and competes with Frisha. Jimson wrongly accuses Rezkin of attacking the women, then apologizes after learning the truth. Organized bandits later ambush the party. Tam makes his first apparent kill while saving the wounded Jimson, and Rezkin rescues and treats the badly injured Reaylin. The group reaches Kaibain and is welcomed into House Marcum by Lady Adelina. General Marcum questions Rezkin's unusual education, unknown origins, and interest in Frisha. Rezkin offers little beyond describing himself as a warrior trained by masters who chose to protect Frisha and Tam freely. The party is safe for the moment, but Marcum's suspicion places their planned journey to Scutton in doubt.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

While staying at House Marcum, Rezkin learns that King Caydean is expanding the army without explaining the buildup or funding it adequately. Frisha cannot travel to the tournament without an approved escort, so she and Rezkin agree to seek a prime courtship. Meanwhile, Rezkin resumes his hidden work as the Raven. He uncovers Hilith Gadderand's planned betrayal, removes her from leadership of the Razor's Edges, and brings that guild under his authority. Rezkin publicly calls Frisha his girlfriend, and she accepts him as her intended prime suitor. General Marcum refuses consent because Rezkin has no family name or verifiable origin. The dispute deepens when Jimson delivers the delayed military report and Rezkin presents an authenticated certificate from the former king granting him two exceptional blades and apparently unrestricted authority. Rezkin admits intercepting a royal report and describes the fortress battle, Farson's escape, and his fear that the final order may have been part of a conspiracy intended to kill him. Marcum accepts that King Bordran trusted Rezkin but still judges him too dangerous for Frisha. Jimson is promoted to captain. Frisha offers to surrender her inheritance, but Rezkin refuses to let her abandon her family and status, honors Marcum's decision, and leaves their courtship blocked.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Rezkin consolidates Kaibain's Diamondclaw guild, installs separate operational and enforcement leaders, and orders his network to find Striker Farson. He then infiltrates the Black Hall, defeats its protections, and steals the Grandmaster's ceremonial dagger, though a fall leaves him badly injured before Yerwey Dulse treats him at a striker safe house. General Marcum continues to reject Rezkin as Frisha's match but allows the party to attend the tournament with Captain Jimson and additional guards. Rezkin secretly arranges their ship, lodging, and travel documents. As the Raven, he returns to the Black Hall with three thieves as witnesses, protects them through the guild's gauntlet, proves his earlier infiltration, and defeats the Grandmaster without killing him. The assassins swear fealty, and Rezkin reappoints their leader under his command. The Black Hall then warns Marcum that someone has contracted for his assassination and that the Hall will protect his family on the Raven's orders. Marcum learns how widely the Raven's network has spread but does not identify Rezkin as its master. Fearing a palace-connected traitor, Rezkin advises silence toward King Caydean. Marcum sends the travelers onward and entrusts Frisha's safety to Rezkin. They leave Kaibain for Scutton with Farson, the fortress conspiracy, Prince Thresson's fate, and the threat against Marcum unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Rezkin leaves Kaibain for Scutton with Frisha, Tamarin Blackwater, Reaylin de Voss, Captain Jimson, and the escort arranged by General Marcum. Frisha remains committed to Rezkin, but Marcum has refused their prime courtship because Rezkin's origin is unknown and his authority is alarming. Rezkin accepts that decision rather than use the former king's grant to compel consent. Marcum nevertheless trusts him to protect Frisha if danger returns. Secretly, Rezkin is the Raven and now commands a network of northern thieves' guilds, the Razor's Edges, and the Black Hall. He has directed these groups toward intelligence, reduced predation on commoners, protection of Marcum's family, and the search for Striker Farson. The Black Hall has exposed an assassination contract on Marcum, but its sponsor is unknown. Rezkin and Marcum keep the threat from King Caydean because someone connected to the palace may be involved. Farson remains missing, Prince Thresson has not been found, and the purpose of the fortress purge is unresolved. The tournament in Scutton is Rezkin's next opportunity to investigate the covert force that trained him.
