In short (whole book)
Erin returns to a rebuilt Wandering Inn after her uncontrolled memory-fire exposes grief in Pallas. When frost wyverns breach the city, forces from Liscor help repel them, but Bird's false claim to be an Antinium Prognogator nearly starts a war. The resulting attention reaches both the Walled Cities and the Antinium Queens. Erin later unlocks the Garden of Sanctuary, a trust-gated refuge and memorial within her inn, as Bearclaw begins hunting Mrsha and Erin. At River Farm, Pebblesnatch and Ulvama turn a confined goblin camp into the beginnings of a fortified community. Abroad, Trey learns that Octelios transforms outsiders into labor beasts, and Ghazi kills its ruler during their escape. Flos grows his army and receives migrants from Izril. After the numbered story ends, he grants the arriving Gnolls land, finds the Saltstone tribe massacred, rescues its surviving children, and declares war on the kingdom responsible.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Erin Solstice built the Wandering Inn near Liscor and made it a home for a varied household that includes Mrsha, Bird, Numbtongue, and Lyonette. Her magical door connected the inn to distant cities and made it increasingly important to trade, travel, and politics. The inn was destroyed during the recent Creller crisis and is now being rebuilt. Erin is also carrying the consequences of her relationship with Toren, the undead worker she failed to recognize as a person before his killings and attack on her. Beyond Liscor, displaced goblins remain divided and vulnerable after the death of Garen Redfang, while Flos, the King of Destruction, has returned to power and is rebuilding Rhyme. Ilvriss continues to pursue concerns linked to a necromancer, and the Free Antinium remain politically isolated from the other Hives and feared by the Walled Cities.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Erin returns from a solitary break while the Wandering Inn reopens in a newly defensible form. She is troubled by her responsibility toward Toren and discovers that Like Fire, Memory can produce cold blue grief-fire and a warmer flame associated with happiness. In Pallas, the grief-fire spreads through a master smith's forge and forces a crowd to confront painful memories, leading to Erin's temporary arrest. Salis helps her test the fire and recover some balance. Meanwhile, frost wyverns driven from the High Passes breach Pallas despite its walls and siege defenses. Liscor sends fighters and Watch officers through Erin's magical door, and Pallas eventually drives off the surviving wyverns, including their lord. Bird's appearance in the aftermath creates a different crisis. Surrounded by forces that regard Antinium as enemies, he falsely claims to be a Prognogator and implies that killing him would mean war. Erin publicly protects him, exposing her ties to the Antinium while rulers and cities watch.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Pallas contains the political crisis by sending Bird and the Liscor delegation home and reporting that the Antinium left without incident. Klbkch treats Bird's bluff as an existential danger to his people, while Erin and Lyonette forbid Bird from returning to Pallas and impose household punishment. Numbtongue quietly befriends him. The battle leaves Pallas with heavy casualties and the wyvern lord still alive. Across the Walled Cities, Bird's skill raises fears that ordinary Antinium workers can develop dangerous specializations. Ilvriss secures support for a secret elite force, publicly justified as protection against the Antinium while also serving his private investigation. The Grand Queen reprimands the Free Queen, but the other Hives' interest in the Free Antinium's apparent advances creates possible diplomatic leverage. Back at the inn, Erin cannot initially activate her new Garden of Sanctuary. She also receives a paired go board, contacts its unknown owner, and begins a friendly long-distance game.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
At River Farm, Laken Godart has granted the displaced goblins separate land but keeps them contained and watched. Ulvama organizes the camp, while Pebblesnatch's cooking wins recognition and provides a stable food system. After Pebblesnatch protects an injured young witch from human children, a larger confrontation is contained without open battle. The goblins begin building defenses and planning mining, trade, and permanent settlement, though their attempted magical-door link to Erin remains unusable. At the inn, Erin reaches a limited agreement with Palt's faction over access to her door network. Pallas officials increase their scrutiny, and a strategist recognizes Lyonette's hidden royal background but keeps it confidential. Mrsha then vanishes through an unexplained door and discovers the Garden of Sanctuary. The Garden contains living landscapes and memorial statues of people Erin has lost. Its entrances respond to Erin's trust, resist outside force, and allow Erin to choose exits through the inn. Elsewhere, the Empress of Sands chooses indirect measures against Flos, who intimidates a neighboring army but proceeds to parley rather than break his peace.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Numbtongue becomes caught in Selim's attempt to seize control of its magical-door endpoint, but Garia Strongheart's father shelters him after an initial misunderstanding. Selim's mayor reopens negotiations when the Players of Selim may relocate to Liscor, leaving regulated access possible. A more immediate danger develops in Liscor: Bearclaw abducts and tortures two Watch guards, conceals her trail, and declares her intention to collect bounties involving Mrsha and Erin. In the Shield Kingdoms, Trey Atwood travels with Ghazi and the Quaross of Germina to Octelios. Despite warnings not to consume anything there, the greater danger is hidden in the city's labor beasts. Trey discovers that one was formerly a person, and the Octelios ruler admits that outsider children were also transformed. Trey attacks him, and Ghazi kills the ruler while clearing an escape route. Trey, Ghazi, and the Quaross flee with recovered evidence as Octelios declares war. Trey gains stronger sand magic and vows revenge against the city.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
Flos continues marching a force of roughly sixty thousand while observing his peace oath. A neighboring king refuses passage and access to prized magical horses, but a republic permits Flos's army to destroy a manticore threat. The campaign raises the levels of ordinary soldiers without requiring a formal war. Flos's court draws recruits and specialists, including elite contract troops and the half-Giant Nomads of the Sky, but he still lacks enough magical weapons and specialized units. Mars defeats a challenger without a weapon and restores the rule that petitioners may reach Flos by defeating one of his vassals. Therese continues training under Orthenon as a prospective bodyguard. Flos tests the unusual strength granted by his king class while a smith plans a suitably heavy blade for him. The numbered story ends as a large, exhausted group of Gnolls and lizardfolk from Izril reaches his camp. Their representatives are ready to ask Flos for protection and a permanent place within his realm.
How does it end? (ending)
By the close, Erin is home in the rebuilt Wandering Inn and the Garden of Sanctuary is a functioning refuge, memorial, and flexible route through the building. Bird's bluff has not caused war, but it has made both the inn and the Free Hive objects of wider scrutiny. Selim's magical-door endpoint remains under negotiation, and Bearclaw has abducted Watch officers while pursuing bounties on Mrsha and Erin. At River Farm, Pebblesnatch and Ulvama have given the displaced goblins food production, defenses, and plans for a permanent settlement, though they remain watched and distrust Laken Godart. Trey, Ghazi, and the Quaross escape Octelios with evidence that outsiders were transformed, leaving the city openly hostile. Flos's army continues to grow but lacks equipment and specialists. In the later narrative, Flos accepts Gnolls and lizardfolk as subjects, grants the Gnolls land, protects the surviving Saltstone children, and declares war after their tribe's massacre. Another neighboring king also mobilizes against the offending realm.
