In short (whole book)

John Sutton expands Sutton Farm while seeking wheat that can process mana safely, but each large use of his power pushes his doom score toward an apocalyptic threshold. Ellie becomes a storm witch, the farm opens new trade routes, and an undead attack reveals that John's former legendary necromancer enemy is still active. After Earl Vosik begins hunting Ellie, John leads Ellie, Haver, Sven, and the wolves toward the Shadow Tower, drawing Vosik away from the farm. Inside, Vosik becomes a manastone-powered monster. Sven dies saving Ellie, and John reveals himself as the Eternal Flame before destroying Vosik and charging the tower crystal. The Flower of Promise restores the tower's balance, solves the mystery of Ferdie's and Sigvald's intelligence, and offers preserved research toward safe mana-processing wheat, reducing John's doom score to 93. John and Ellie return to the secure farm as an openly affectionate pair. Meanwhile, Katrine survives a magic-cabal coup and secretly sets out to find John.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

John Sutton enters this volume as a farmer and former soldier. Ellie and Ben return, along with Ferdie, Sigvald, and Gofreid. Wolf Den and the grimm are also established parts of the setting.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Sutton Farm is productive again, but John's experimental wheat stores dangerous amounts of mana instead of making it safe for ordinary consumption. A strange podded plant cared for by Ferdie may offer a clue because it absorbs and circulates mana. The discovery also begins an investigation into the unusual intelligence shown by the plant, Ferdie, and Sigvald. While John develops labor-saving machinery for the harvest, Ellie prepares for the class ceremony she could not finish years ago. She believes storms are her proper medium, though failure could destroy her damaged mana vessel or kill her. During a powerful storm, Ellie completes the ceremony and becomes a witch. Her new abilities include spellcasting, spirit work, potion enhancement, and True Sight. Looking at John with True Sight produces an overwhelming vision of darkness and armored dead, confirming that his apparent life as a retired soldier and farmer conceals something far greater. John discourages her from dwelling on it. Their partnership grows closer, and the recovery of Ellie's grandmother's magical library becomes a practical future goal.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

John learns several water spells from the recovered scrolls and discovers that their structures can help him design new fire magic. Sutton Farm completes its harvest with John's reaping machine, while Gofreid brings a forge and helps establish guarded trade with Kingsmouth. The farm's success is interrupted when John uncovers a mass grave. Evidence points to an assassin-class killer who remains somewhere in the valley, so John hires Haver, the Wolf Den leader, to watch the area while the grain convoy travels. On the road, Ellie's divination detects an approaching magical attack. A novice necromancer sends drugged bandits and reanimates the fallen, but the caravan's guards hold their ground while John kills the caster. He then recognizes the power behind her as a legendary necromancer he fought during the war. That enemy survived, now knows John's location, and may threaten his home. The encounter raises John's doom score to 76. Ellie, unwilling to remain helpless in another attack, asks John for combat training.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

John begins teaching Ellie to control her classholder strength and movement. The convoy is then surrounded by hundreds of mounted bandits whose people are being pushed toward larger raids by hunger and exclusion from city markets. John invokes their customs to secure a feast instead of a battle, proposes a lawful grain trade, and passes a ritual brotherhood trial by fighting their leader to a draw. The former attackers become escorts and prospective trading partners. In Kingsmouth, John uses high religious authority to gain their peaceful entry and challenges corruption in the grain market without publicly explaining his rank. After arranging a fair grain sale and asking a senior religious official to investigate the corrupt market, John leaves the city with Ellie. They ride toward her grandmother's hidden home and stop outside the valley that leads to it. The condition of the former home and the dangers on the route remain unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

The dead follower carries orders from Earl Vosik to capture Ellie and investigate an object connected to Red Coral. John and Ellie survive giant spiders, cross the enchanted maze around her childhood manor, and meet its spirit guardian. A vestige of Ellie's grandmother explains that Ellie is not her blood descendant and cannot inherit the star-bound estate or its library. Ellie receives a crystal ball, wand, and spellbook before the guardian takes the manor away. On the return journey, another armed group tries to seize her, but John and Ellie eliminate the attackers to keep her true magic secret. They complete the grain business in Kingsmouth and strengthen their ties with the horse-bandit people before returning home. Thomas identifies the recurring infinity mark as Infinitum, whose scattered members seek the Door of the Immortal. With his doom score at 79 and slower quests offering little immediate hope, John chooses the mystery of Ferdie's and Sigvald's intelligence as his best chance to reduce it. The strange plant's root system becomes the center of that investigation as the farm begins another wheat planting.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

The strange plant accepts water mana and sends John an image linking its main body to the Shadow Tower. John studies the historical water mage's materials to locate the tower while he and Ellie test the plant's flowers on wheat. Ellie's attempt to summon a familiar instead calls a violent storm spirit. Ferdie and Sigvald help defend her, and Sigvald swallows the exposed spirit during the unfinished binding. The magic transforms him into Ellie's lightning-infused familiar. Soon Haver reports a large hostile force nearby, and valley residents warn that a noble and roughly twenty classholders are seeking John and Ellie. To lead them away from Sutton Farm, John organizes a Shadow Tower expedition. Thomas remains behind to defend the farm, while Ellie insists on accompanying John. In Fairford, Sven joins as trapbinder and scout, and Haver arrives with his wolves. Earl Vosik's tracking magic fixes on John because of the object Vosik wants. John allows the pursuit to continue, pays his companions for the danger, and leads the expedition into the mountains with Vosik's force following.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

The expedition follows its magical compass into a dormant volcano, where a grimm settlement is fighting giant centipedes. John, Ellie, Sven, Haver, Sigvald, and the grimm defeat the swarm and its leader. In return for a blue-flame weapon, the grimm leader guides them to the sealed Shadow Tower. The structure is an inverted underground tower filled with dangerous flowers and connected by narrow bridges. Earl Vosik and nineteen classholders enter behind them. Fighting breaks out as flower guardians awaken and spread through the tower. When his pursuit is threatened, Vosik uses a skull-cane device to become a winged creature powered by a dark manastone. He displays legendary strength and continues demanding the missing box. John bluffs that Ellie is needed to unlock it, keeping her alive. Sven takes Ellie upward, while Haver delays Vosik. Vosik knocks Haver into the central shaft, and John spends another doom point to save him. John and Haver land far below, surrounded by thousands of flower guardians, while Vosik continues after Ellie and Sven above.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

The flower guardians carry John and Haver to a laboratory, where a large purple plant communicates through visions. It explains that the tower's uncontrolled guardians need energy supplied to the summit crystal to restore balance. Above them, Sven uses false trails to keep Ellie ahead of Vosik, but the pair are cornered near the crystal. Sven takes a killing blow meant for Ellie and dies after revealing his service to the Eternal Flame. John reaches the summit, reveals that he is the Eternal Flame, destroys Vosik, and charges the crystal while stopping at 98 doom points. Ellie accepts his hidden identity and urges him not to isolate himself from those who choose to stand with him. The purple plant takes human form as the Flower of Promise. It is a separate being created from the life and memories of Tower Master Kelvis's dead student, and it confirms that the historical water mage and Tower Master Kelvis were the same person. Its mana-absorbing plants caused Ferdie and Sigvald to become intelligent. Solving that mystery lowers John's doom score to 93. The Flower of Promise retains the lost tower research and agrees to pursue mana-processing wheat that people can safely eat.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

The grimm remain in the Shadow Tower to help the Flower of Promise restore it. John, Ellie, Haver, the wolves, and Sigvald leave safely, and Sven is buried at the tower summit. In Fairford, a letter confirms that Sven knowingly joined the expedition to repay a debt to John and the service organization founded by the Eternal Flame. John arranges support for Sven's employee to inherit the inn, then returns to Sutton Farm. The farm has survived, Thomas continues training Ben, and Ellie and John acknowledge their affection more openly. Their immediate hope is the Flower of Promise's research into wheat that can process mana, but John remains at 93 doom points and the result is not yet certain. Elsewhere, political opposition backed by a magic cabal attempts to depose Katrine. The cabal claims to have poisoned the Eternal Flame and believes John died. Katrine reveals herself as a legendary wind mage, kills the attackers, and decides to fake her death before stronger enemies arrive. With clues placing John near Kingsmouth, she leaves the capital to seek him. The cabal, the surviving legendary necromancer, and the valley killer remain active or unresolved threats.

How does it end? (ending)

Sven dies protecting Ellie from Earl Vosik in the Shadow Tower. John reveals himself as the Eternal Flame, destroys Vosik, and charges the tower crystal while stopping at 98 doom points. The Flower of Promise restores the tower's balance, explains that it is a plant-born successor carrying the memories of Tower Master Kelvis's student, and confirms that its plants awakened Ferdie and Sigvald. Completing that investigation lowers John's doom score to 93. The Flower of Promise retains the tower's lost research and begins work on mana-processing wheat, though success remains unproven. The grimm stay to help restore the tower, while John, Ellie, Haver, the wolves, and Sigvald return safely to Sutton Farm. Sven is honored, and John supports the transfer of his inn to its employee. Ellie knows John's identity and their affection is now open. The valley murderer and the legendary necromancer remain unresolved threats. Elsewhere, Katrine defeats a cabal-backed coup, decides to fake her death, and heads toward Kingsmouth to find John. The cabal is pursuing them both but mistakenly believes John is dead.
