Once the human heir of House Atreides, Leto II is now the God Emperor who has ruled for some three and a half thousand years. Long ago he fused his body with sandtrout, and over the centuries he has slowly become an enormous sandworm with a still-human face and hands, gaining near-immortality, prescience, and the memories of all his ancestors. He enforces a rigid, stifling peace upon humanity as part of a long design he calls the Golden Path, worshipped as a living god and feared as a tyrant, lonely beyond measure in his monstrous, undying form.

The latest in an unending series of gholas grown from the cells of the Atreides swordmaster Duncan Idaho. Across the millennia the God Emperor has repeatedly revived him to serve as commander of his forces and as a companion who remembers the ancient days. Each new Duncan carries the loyalty, skill, and blunt temperament of the original, and each must come to terms anew with the strange, worm-bodied ruler he serves.

The God Emperor's devoted majordomo and chief administrator, an aged descendant of the Atreides line who runs the day-to-day affairs of the empire. He understands his ruler better than anyone else alive, serving him with a mixture of deep loyalty, weary duty, and quiet dread.

Moneo's headstrong young daughter, a rebel who conspires against the God Emperor and his oppressive order. A product of the Atreides breeding line Leto has cultivated for thousands of years, she is fierce, defiant, and unwilling to accept the changeless world the Tyrant has imposed.

A gentle, disarmingly kind ambassador from the machine-world of Ix, sent to the God Emperor's court. Her warmth, honesty, and selflessness reach Leto as no one has in centuries, stirring in the ancient ruler feelings he had long thought dead.

A fanatically devoted officer of the Fish Speakers, the God Emperor's all-female army and priesthood. She worships Leto as a god and obeys his commands without question or hesitation, her faith absolute.

The God Emperor's exclusively female military and religious order, who revere him as a living deity and enforce his rule across the empire. Through them Leto keeps humanity disarmed, controlled, and at peace, their loyalty to him fierce and unwavering.
