Darrow (Protagonist)
Also known as The Reaper
Appears from the start
A Red secretly remade into a Gold and planted among the ruling caste as an agent of the rebel Sons of Ares. Since triumphing at the Institute he has risen as a lancer in the service of ArchGovernor Augustus of Mars, celebrated among Golds as a fearsome young commander. He carries the grief of his executed wife Eo, the guilt of his deceptions, and the crushing weight of a secret that would mean his death if exposed, all while trying to climb high enough to strike at the heart of the Society.
Virginia au Augustus (Supporting)
Also known as Mustang
Appears from the start
The brilliant, principled daughter of ArchGovernor Augustus and a gifted leader in her own right. She and Darrow forged a deep bond during the Institute, but they parted on uncertain terms once he learned she was the child of the man he serves and the sister of his enemy. Sharp, wary, and fiercely intelligent, she remains one of the few people who might match Darrow's ambitions or expose his lies.
Sevro (Supporting)
Also known as Goblin
Appears from the start
Darrow's most loyal friend and the feral, fearless leader of his band of raiders, the Howlers. Small, scarred, and utterly devoted, he fights at Darrow's side without question and keeps his darkest confidences. Beneath the savagery is a sharp mind and a stubborn loyalty that Darrow leans on more than he admits.
Cassius au Bellona (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The once-beloved friend who became Darrow's bitter enemy after learning Darrow killed his brother. A skilled and celebrated young warrior of the powerful Bellona family, he burns to avenge his kin and reclaim his house's honor. Proud and dangerous, he stands squarely on the opposite side of the feud that drives much of the conflict.
Adrius au Augustus (Antagonist)
Also known as The Jackal
Appears from the start
The cunning, cold-blooded son of ArchGovernor Augustus and brother of Virginia. Maimed and marked by his time at the Institute, he is a patient schemer who plays every faction against the others. His ambitions run deeper than anyone credits, and his loyalty extends no further than his own advantage.
Nero au Augustus (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The ArchGovernor of Mars and Darrow's imperious liege lord, one of the great powers of the Society. Ruthless, calculating, and consumed by his rivalry with the Bellona family and his standing before the Sovereign, he values Darrow as a weapon while demanding absolute results. His favor is powerful and perilous in equal measure.
Roque (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The gentle, poetic Gold who has remained one of Darrow's dearest friends since the Institute. Thoughtful and loyal, he offers counsel, warmth, and a conscience amid the intrigue. He believes in honor and in the friendships he has made, and he trusts Darrow deeply.
Fitchner (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The gruff, cynical Gold who once oversaw Darrow at the Institute and has since become a wry ally and confidant. Blunt and hard to read, he moves through the Society's politics with a survivor's caution and seems to understand more about its hidden currents than he lets on.
Octavia au Lune (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The Sovereign, supreme ruler of the entire Society. Aged but formidable, she governs from Luna with subtle cruelty and total control, balancing the great Gold houses against one another to preserve her power. She watches the ambitions of the ArchGovernors closely and tolerates no true rivals.
Victra au Julii (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A blunt, bold Gold of a wealthy and infamous family who becomes an ally to Darrow. Fierce in battle and unfiltered in speech, she is loyal to those who earn it and contemptuous of pretense. Her strength and candor make her a valued companion in a world of masks.
Lorn au Arcos (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A legendary retired warrior once counted among the greatest swordsmen of the Society, now living apart from its politics. Weary of the bloodshed he has seen, he prizes honor and family over ambition. His skill and his moral authority make his judgment and his allegiance immensely valuable to anyone who can win them.
