Two years after the Institute, Darrow serves as a lancer to ArchGovernor Augustus of Mars, still hiding that he is a Red remade into a Gold and still working for the rebel Sons of Ares. A humiliating defeat nearly ends his career, and to survive he plays the deadly politics of the great houses at the highest level, drawing the powerful Sovereign, the vengeful Bellona family, and Augustus's own children into a web of alliances and betrayals. Darrow forges new bonds with allies like Victra and the legendary swordsman Lorn, reconciles and clashes with Mustang, and gambles ever larger to move the Society toward the revolution he serves. His schemes build to an audacious bid for power at a grand gathering, but it is turned against him: his friend Roque, feeling used, betrays him; Augustus's son Adrius, the Jackal, seizes the moment to murder his own father; and the rebel leader Ares is unmasked and killed. The book ends with Darrow's plan in ruins and Darrow himself seized, his fate hanging in the balance.

Previously: Darrow was a Red, the lowest caste in a color-coded society, mining beneath Mars in the belief his people were preparing the planet for humankind. After his wife Eo was executed for defiance and Darrow was hanged for burying her, the rebel Sons of Ares saved his life and revealed the truth: Mars had been livable for generations and the Reds were slaves kept in ignorance. The rebels surgically remade Darrow into a Gold and sent him to infiltrate the Institute, the brutal academy where young Golds compete in a year-long war game. Passing as one of the ruling caste, Darrow rose to lead House Mars and gathered fierce, loyal allies, including Sevro and the brilliant Mustang, later revealed to be Virginia au Augustus, daughter of the ArchGovernor of Mars. He won the contest but lost his friend Cassius au Bellona, who turned on him after learning Darrow had killed his brother, and he exposed a sadistic rival as Adrius au Augustus, the Jackal. As his prize, Darrow was taken into ArchGovernor Augustus's service, giving the rebellion a hidden agent among the most powerful Golds of the Society.

Darrow's grand gambit at a great gathering collapses through betrayal. His gentle friend Roque, wounded by the discovery that Darrow has manipulated and lied to those closest to him, turns against him and helps spring the trap. In the chaos, ArchGovernor Augustus's son Adrius, the Jackal, reveals his own long game and murders his father, seizing power for himself. The masked leader of the Sons of Ares, Ares, is exposed to be Fitchner, Darrow's gruff mentor, and he is killed. Darrow, outmaneuvered and surrounded, is overpowered and taken. The revolution he has risked everything to advance is thrown into disarray, its hidden leader dead and its greatest agent captured, leaving Darrow's survival and the fate of the Rising uncertain as the book closes on a knife-edge.
