Joe Bishop and Task Force Black race to prevent a surviving Outsider scout from building the Icebox, a replacement intergalactic ingress. They sabotage its material supply, steal the Maxolhx Diktat's fleet-control implant, and locate the construction site, but four gridbusters fail against its shield and Valkyrie is crippled. After Margaret Adams and Happy repel an Outsider malware attack on Jaguar, Nagatha uncovers a route to Fortress Hercules. Bishop and Skippy secure the Elder dreadnought Excalibur under Reed's command. Excalibur destroys the Icebox by placing stellar material beside it, then traps the last Outsider in null space and destroys its remnant. The victory produces a worse danger: a stable ground-state bubble more than two light years wide, expanding through matter under physical laws that known Elder technology cannot counter.

Previously: Task Force Black attacked an Outsider Gateway before its construction could become the foundation for a larger invasion. A Vortex destroyed the Gateway and the active Outsider associated with it, but the victory was incomplete. Two Outsider scout ships crossed into the galaxy before the structure fell. Their location, capabilities, and intentions remained unknown, and Skippy could not explain the principles behind their technology. The operation also left Valkyrie's jump drive badly damaged. The ship could make only limited jumps and depended on a star carrier for longer travel, sharply restricting its ability to pursue the escaped vessels. Joe Bishop, Skippy, Reed, Frey, and the rest of Task Force Black therefore entered the new crisis without a reliable tracking method, a proven weapon, or a fully independent ship. Their immediate problem was no longer the destroyed Gateway itself, but the two scouts already loose in the galaxy and whatever invasion system they might try to create next.

Task Force Black begins by shadowing an unexplained Maxolhx fleet, but a dangerous attempt to steal its navigation data fails. Skippy's study of the destroyed Gateway indicates that Outsider technology works inside regions governed by altered physics and that its ships move without conventional wormholes. Earth authorizes a tightly supervised reconnaissance mission to learn what the Maxolhx know, placing civilian monitors and Chang aboard Valkyrie. The crew also learns that the two escaped vessels are incomplete scouts seeking to establish a larger invasion infrastructure. On Jaguar, Margaret Adams supports the colony's environmental recovery while a Sentinel gradually reduces the protective blanket around the planet. Elsewhere, Scorandum and Kinsta expand a covert information campaign intended to turn Maxolhx client species against their patrons. A relay interception finally reveals the central threat: the scouts want exotic materials for a new intergalactic production and ingress machine. Joe names this planned construct the Icebox. The Maxolhx must obtain its components from lower-tier client industries, giving Task Force Black a limited opportunity to disrupt the supply chain before the machine becomes active.

Skippy narrows the Icebox supply problem from 185 possible systems to 26 facilities that can be converted quickly. Joe secretly contacts a senior Maxolhx military leader who has private doubts about the Outsider alliance and asks him to verify the human warning independently. The leader sends a trusted admiral beyond the galactic rim, where her reconnaissance team sees a concealed ring machine manufacture ships and witnesses Valkyrie destroy it. She returns convinced that the alleged Sentinel project is an invasion mechanism. Meanwhile, Task Force Black replaces an impractical simultaneous bombardment with a combined cyber and kinetic operation. Skippy plants sabotage in active fabrication networks and manipulates access to isolated sites, while UN task forces prepare strikes against the remaining targets. Operation Grand Slam then destroys or cripples the selected fabrication capacity, delaying the Icebox material supply without ending it. Scorandum and Kinsta deepen the client rebellion through a staged weapons transfer and a lethal ambush designed to implicate another polity. The Maxolhx military leader accepts that the Outsider is a common enemy and proposes temporary cooperation. Joe's team agrees to provide limited support for his planned coup, although the Icebox and its surviving builder remain unlocated.

The planned Maxolhx coup is paused when Skippy discovers that the incumbent Diktat has a cranial implant able to disable upgraded Hegemony warships. Because the device requires the Diktat's own biological and mental authentication, the ruler must remain alive and in office until Task Force Black can use it. Sensor evidence also shows that one Outsider scout destroyed itself while crossing space still disrupted by the former Gateway, leaving a single active ship. Joe develops a method for following residual particles from that scout's displacement travel, but the Outsider detects the pursuit and plants a trail into a lethal altered-physics trap. A second approach emerges after Skippy learns that the Maxolhx assembled a hidden mobile fabricator for the Icebox material. Wormhole systems are instructed to flag the material's distinctive components. During the escalating client rebellion, Valkyrie also captures four surviving gridbuster weapons. A reported shipment finally leads the team past a concealed wormhole and into the Icebox region. A drone finds the unfinished machine, its factory ship, the docked Outsider, and more than one hundred Maxolhx guard ships. Rather than attack immediately, Joe leaves a locator and turns toward the Maxolhx homeworld to steal the Diktat's implant.

Frey leads Star Team Razor into the Diktat's hunting lodge while Skippy manipulates traffic, sensors, guards, and local systems. The team sedates the ruler, removes his hidden implant, and substitutes a fake. When an overlooked sensor exposes the operation, Skippy persuades a local security AI to accept freedom and spread that emancipation across the homeworld's enslaved AI network. The AIs conceal Razor's escape, and a staged firefight leaves the Diktat alive while supporting a false account of the attack. With the implant secured, Task Force Black launches Operation Junkyard. The device disables the Maxolhx guard fleet, but the Outsider's shield projectors contain all four gridbusters. Skippy saves Valkyrie with an extreme jump that kills seventeen crew members, gravely damages the ship, and leaves him unresponsive. The crew improvises a solar sail and gravity assist to avoid a red dwarf, but Valkyrie is no longer a practical combat vessel. The Outsider takes control of the disabled guard fleet after its crews are expelled into space. It also attacks Jaguar through malware, but Margaret Adams destroys the combots sent after her family and Happy reverses the intrusion. Margaret then gives birth prematurely to a healthy daughter, Kaylee. Skippy survives with serious matrix damage, while calls grow for Joe's removal.

Earth refuses to rebuild Valkyrie and assigns Joe to another battlecruiser, but he rejects the idea that the failed Icebox strike has ended the fight. Analysis shows that sustained gridbuster effects might overwhelm the shield, yet the required arsenal does not exist. Joe instead argues that the Elders must have fielded another defense against Outsiders. A locked contingency region in Nagatha's inherited matrix becomes the only lead. After Reed realizes that Nagatha never directly received Skippy's Outsider alarm, the alert unlocks data identifying active Vortexes and five Elder warship fortresses. Fortress Hercules is reachable, though Nagatha lacks Unit 52's complete authority. Skippy forces the Security Council to restore Joe's command and expand Task Force Black. At Hercules, a Dyson sphere's defenses conditionally recognize Skippy and the accompanying Guardians but reject the human ship. Joe crosses open vacuum with minimal protection to carry Skippy through a service hatch. Skippy connects with the fortress AI and rescues the badly injured Joe, allowing the battlecruiser and a human team inside. Hercules contains stored Elder warships, but each requires a separate Master Control AI. It prepares one dreadnought for Skippy. Joe assigns Reed to command the vessel, which she names Excalibur.

Excalibur is an Elder dreadnought designed for combat against Outsiders, operated by its ship AI under Skippy's authority and commanded by Reed. Before the final attack, it impersonates an Outsider scout over the Maxolhx homeworld, announces the end of the alliance, destroys the ruler's protected sanctum, and urges a Maxolhx admiral to seize power. At the Icebox, Skippy reconfigures two Elder wormholes to place stellar-core material beside the construction site. The blast destroys the Icebox and its defensive sphere, but the Outsider scout escapes and contacts Skippy directly. It offers him a place in its community and promises to rebuild the ingress after destroying Excalibur. Skippy refuses to abandon Joe and the human team. The Outsider then attacks a false projection of Excalibur and skips into a concealed null-space trap. When an energy remnant tries to reform, Excalibur erases it with a resonance weapon, killing the final scout. Skippy immediately orders a retreat. The null-space event has created a stable ground-state bubble whose physical laws are incompatible with the surrounding universe. It has already consumed matter across more than two light years, will expand again when it reaches a rogue planet in four months, and cannot be stopped with known Elder technology. The Icebox and Outsiders are gone, but the victory leaves the galaxy facing an expanding catastrophe.

Task Force Black escapes aboard Excalibur after destroying both the Icebox and the last Outsider scout. Reed commands the Elder dreadnought, while Joe Bishop and Skippy remain together with the surviving team. Skippy is still limited by inaccessible damage in his matrix. Valkyrie and its surviving crew escaped the earlier failed strike, which killed seventeen crew members, but the ship will not return to combat. Margaret Adams, her sons, and newborn Kaylee remain on Jaguar, where Happy survived the malware attack but the colony's defenses and environment are strained. Scorandum and Kinsta have stopped actively escalating the client rebellion, though its consequences remain unresolved. The Maxolhx homeworld's AIs are secretly autonomous, and the Hegemony's political succession and commandeered fleet are unsettled. The immediate Outsider invasion is over, but Excalibur's null-space trap created a ground-state bubble with incompatible physics. It already spans more than two light years, will grow again when it consumes a rogue planet in four months, and is expected eventually to reach inhabited systems and the galactic core. No known Elder technology can stop it.
