In short (whole book)

Jason Asano is pulled from Earth into a magical world, survives a blood cult, and joins the adventurers Rufus, Gary, and Farrah. He develops dark, blood, sin, and doom powers, binds the leech familiar Colin, trains in Greenstone, and rises to three-star Iron-rank status while healing the poor and solving increasingly complex contracts. His work exposes ancient Order of the Reaper remains, a Mercer land scheme, and the coercion surrounding thieves Sophie and Belinda. Jason secures sanctuary for the pair and contests Sophie's indenture rather than surrender her to Lucian Lamprey. Meanwhile, an expedition into a disrupted astral space is attacked by constructs and metal-grafted enemies. Farrah is killed, Rufus is maimed and healed, and five adventurers remain missing. The node network is disabled, but its purpose is unknown. Jason, Gary, and grieving Rufus return to Greenstone, where Sophie's safety and Jason's possible route home remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Jason Asano wakes in an unfamiliar hedge maze with no clothing, no explanation, and an intuitive interface offering maps, quests, and an inventory. He survives lesser monsters, descends through a well, and finds a ritual chamber beneath the Vane estate. The injured ritualist there identifies Jason as an Outworlder, attacks him, and dies in the struggle. Jason survives the man's snake familiar, gains dark essence and magical abilities, but is then captured by the estate's blood cult. In the cult's cells he meets the adventurers Rufus Remore, Gary, Anisa, and Farrah, all intended as sacrifices. Jason uses spirit coins for temporary power, escapes, and returns for the others. Gary and Rufus help fight through the cult while Jason kills its leaders, Cressida Vane and Darryl Caruthers. After Farrah is freed, she identifies the blood-pool ritual as an attempt to create a sanguine horror, a creature capable of catastrophic growth. The rescuers realize that the cultists killed during their escape may have supplied the ritual's final blood, so they prepare to confront the creation while it is still vulnerable.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

The freed prisoners stop the immediate blood-feast threat and return to the Vane estate for Anisa, who escapes and rejoins them. They recover most of their equipment and identify the cult as a local branch of the Red Table, although some members and stolen property are already gone. Jason accepts that the new world is real and considers Rufus's offer to train him as an adventurer. Rufus, Gary, and Farrah explain essences, awakening stones, ranks, and the responsibility of fighting monsters. Jason combines dark, blood, and sin essences, producing the doom confluence and advancing him to Iron rank. His resulting powers specialize in curses, bleeding, poison, recovery, cleansing, and movement through shadows. Against his friends' warnings, he also uses an apocalypse awakening stone. It grants a blood-familiar ritual that summons a leech mass identified as a sanguine horror. The familiar merges into Jason's blood under his control. Jason conceals this dangerous development from Anisa as the group leaves the cleared estate and heads toward the coastal city of Greenstone.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

On the journey toward Greenstone, the group stops at a desert oasis village while searching for the person who betrayed the adventurers to the blood cult. Jason visits the village's waterfall aperture with its guardian, Hiram. When the water fails and a shab emerges, Jason and Hiram kill it, only for the unstable aperture to expel more monsters. They prevent four surviving shabs from reaching the village, and Jason gives Hiram a water essence for his granddaughter. Jason's fighting style now relies on accumulating afflictions and on the leech familiar he names Colin. Meanwhile, Rufus, Farrah, Gary, and Anisa catch the betrayer, but Anisa kills him before Rufus can question him. The unexplained ambush that led to the group's capture therefore remains unresolved. Jason voices suspicion about Anisa while admitting his bias. When Anisa attacks Colin, Gary intervenes and Rufus removes her from the travelling team, concluding that he can no longer trust her judgment.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

Jason travels with Rufus, Gary, and Farrah toward Greenstone, taking solo monster hunts along the way and refusing monster cores as a shortcut to advancement. He separates from them in the Delta, where he discovers that one of his powers can cleanse illness from other people. His free treatment of villagers later contributes to conflict with the Church of the Healer. After entering Greenstone, Jason applies to the Adventure Society and reunites with his friends. Rufus arranges intensive preparation using the Geller family's facilities, while Gary trains Jason physically and Farrah teaches meditation and aura control. Jason meets fellow candidate Humphrey Geller, Humphrey's shape-changing dragon Stash, and Knowledge acolyte Gabrielle Pellin. The Society clears Jason's unusual essence combination for assessment. Training forces him to confront both the practical limits of skill books and his isolation after displacement. His friends recognize that the routine is helping him remain stable. After repeated failure, Jason finally activates Path of Shadows and teleports through a visible shadow, though his first uncontrolled destination leaves him with much more to learn.

Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)

Jason's unusual spirit coins draw the attention of Magic Society director Lucian Lamprey, deputy Pochard Finn, and investigator Clive Standish. Elsewhere, Clarissa Ventress forces former pit fighter Sophie Wexler, known as Nightingale, back into dangerous matches to pressure Cole Silva. Sophie's friend Belinda objects, while Lucian becomes independently interested in obtaining Sophie. Jason visits the Temple of Knowledge and learns that his arrival was accidental. The goddess confirms that his World Phoenix token can return him home, but refuses to reveal its activation conditions because he is not ready. Jason keeps the token. His training continues with Rufus and Danielle Geller, while Humphrey undergoes harsh exercises intended to overcome hesitation. Jason receives the Way of the Reaper martial skill book, but simulated combat proves that knowledge of techniques is not the same as practical competence. Clarissa and Lucian arrange for Sophie to be caught during thefts without openly breaking Clarissa's promise of protection. Sophie and Belinda recognize that Clarissa's protection has become coercion. Ordered to rob prominent targets, they begin planning escape from Greenstone while outwardly complying.

Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)

Jason and Humphrey begin their Adventure Society field assessment under Vincent Trenslow. Humphrey demonstrates the decisiveness missing from his earlier attempt, while Jason is forced to show that he can handle ordinary threats rather than only enemies vulnerable to his affliction specialty. Vincent tests judgment as well as combat, including an unsafe trap-weaver assignment that the candidates correctly refuse. Jason eventually realizes that he has been treating martial technique and essence powers as separate systems. Against a pack of Margols, he combines shadow movement, weapons, leeches, curses, poison, and draining abilities into a coherent fighting style and kills the pack. The assessment ends with Jason conscious of how much he enjoyed controlling the fight. He is nevertheless accepted into the Society. Jason sells loot, improves his equipment, and gives Jory substantial investment capital to expand his affordable Old City clinic and alchemy operation. Vincent formally issues Jason a one-star Iron-rank badge, despite Jason's immunity to its tracking function. Jason can now take basic contracts and begins recording messages for his family in case he eventually returns home.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

As a new adventurer, Jason works through Greenstone's contract backlog and attracts the notice of Adventure Society director Elspeth Arella. Cassandra Mercer approaches him while her family quietly investigates his unusual background. In Geller training, Jason defeats a coordinated five-person team by exploiting terrain, monsters, fear, and Colin, but his methods disturb several participants. Jason then works with Clive Standish on a Delta contract involving mangrove snatchers. Clive proves an effective astral-magic specialist and offers a theory that Jason's original body was lost during transit through the deep astral before his soul formed a new one. Together they eliminate the monsters threatening four villages. Their uneasy cooperation becomes productive. Meanwhile, Sophie and Belinda remain under Clarissa Ventress's deadline to commit conspicuous thefts. The resulting robberies lead to an open contract for a single-essence thief. Lucian pressures Clarissa because the operation has drawn too much attention, but the public pursuit is itself part of their hidden arrangement. Sophie and Belinda are being maneuvered toward capture while they continue seeking a way to escape.

Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)

An apparently routine rat-clearing job leads Jason into hidden Old City tunnels, where he kills a Ratgorger and completes concealed objectives. His use of fear in the Geller exercise causes a serious moral disagreement with Humphrey, while Farrah confirms that Colin is functionally a summoned sanguine horror with severe low-rank weaknesses. Jason later joins Humphrey, Gabrielle, and other adventurers escorting a spirit-coin shipment through the desert. His public confrontation with Thadwick Mercer causes Thadwick and two companions to abandon the team, leaving it short-handed and without a healer. The remaining group survives sand shabs and a large elemental ambush, reaches the coin farm, and then fights off raiders during the return convoy. The attackers are northern nomads, and a larger sand barge remains nearby. Jason argues successfully that the escort must deliver its cargo rather than pursue an unknown force. Back in Greenstone, he accepts responsibility for damaging team cohesion. Elspeth Arella's review panel recognizes his record and promotes him to two-star status. Jason commits to the coming expedition intended to investigate the nomad barge.

Story so far - through chapter 92 (this book)

Jason, Humphrey, and Clive investigate a fallen-adventurer contract and uncover a sealed ancient complex beneath the marsh. Its history appears deliberately erased, its lower levels are flooded, and surviving combat dummies use the same martial tradition Jason learned from the Way of the Reaper. The group recovers two preserved skill-book cases, the dead adventurer's remains, and then faces a bronze-rank Marsh Hydra. Humphrey evolves Hero's Drive while protecting his companions, and Jason's interface evolves to support a party. Together with Stash, they kill the Hydra and return the fallen adventurer for burial. The recovered books contain additional Way of the Reaper forms, connecting Jason's secret martial art to the ancient site and possibly to the confidential mission that brought Rufus's team to Greenstone. Jason also joins the major expedition against the northern nomads and helps seize their sand barge. The tribe surrenders, but the victors discover captive women, children, and slaves aboard. Why the nomads moved south remains unanswered. Jason's Greenstone friendships deepen, his relationship with Cassandra becomes established, and the recovery team earns broad respect.

Story so far - through chapter 98 (this book)

The surrendered nomad tribe creates a political and humanitarian crisis, since its people refuse to return north and claim that surrender transferred ownership of their dependants and vessel. Jason turns to a suspicious monster contract at the Lindover lumber mill. He proves that repeated furgax sightings are deliberate summonings intended to halt production and strip the owner of his land. Summoner Dean Tuckle agrees to cooperate and identifies Thadwick Mercer as the organizer of both the scheme and earlier retaliation against Jason. At the same time, Neil Davone refuses to join the Healer temple's attack on Jory's clinic. The Healer appears personally, strips the corrupt clergy of divine authority, accepts the penitents under Neil's leadership, and sanctifies Jory's clinic. Jason survives further Mercer attacks and takes his evidence to Thalia Mercer. They privately agree to compensate the Lindover owner, reverse the takeover, protect Dean, and remove a captured operative from the Society. Rufus, Gary, Farrah, Cassandra, and many senior adventurers then leave on a Grand Expedition to relocate the nomads and investigate worsening astral disruption, while Jason remains in Greenstone.

Story so far - through chapter 105 (this book)

With many senior figures away, Elspeth Arella promotes Jason to three-star Iron-rank status and gives him greater responsibility. Jason kills a bronze-rank tidal troll alone, awakening the powerful execution spell Verdict. He and Clive then investigate the long-running theft spree. By separating public distractions from thefts of specialized magical equipment, they conclude that the target is Greenstone's spirit-coin vault. Gold-rank adventurer Amir Bahadir arrives with a cloud vessel that becomes a floating palace. Jason and Clive bait Sophie with a shipment containing the last component needed for the vault robbery. Jason marks and pursues her, but outside attackers disrupt the capture, and Sophie reaches Jory's clinic critically afflicted by Jason's curses. Once she survives, Jason learns that Clarissa Ventress used protection, pit fights, and robberies to manipulate her, while Lucian Lamprey seeks to obtain her through legal custody. Adris Dorgan is revealed as Elspeth Arella's father and explains that Arella also used the conflict to pressure Lucian. Jason completes his contract but invokes a right to take Sophie's indenture himself, intending to keep her from Lucian.

Story so far - through chapter 109 (this book)

Sophie learns that her attempt to buy freedom through the vault robbery was entangled in schemes run by Clarissa Ventress, Lucian Lamprey, and Elspeth Arella's interests. Jason admits that she has no reason to trust him but insists that his contractual claim is preferable to Lucian's custody. Belinda and Sophie cautiously accept the plan because Jory and Clive trust Jason. Elspeth initially agrees to honor the contract, then joins Lucian in using a compromised magistrate and a false legal argument to block it. Vincent Trenslow helps Jason remove Sophie from the prison tower before the ruling can take effect. Amir shelters Sophie and Belinda in his Cloud Palace, while Jason accepts the risk to his Society standing. At the same time, the Grand Expedition discovers astral relay columns forming a vast network. Unknown living fighters and a construct army attack, causing heavy casualties. Elspeth restores the dismissed Vincent when the emergency reaches Greenstone. Amir mobilizes reinforcements, and Jason organizes a medical recovery station with Jory's supplies as Rufus, Gary, Farrah, Danielle, Thalia, and other adventurers fight to hold a retreating line.

Story so far - through chapter 111 (this book)

Amir's rescue force travels toward the astral-space aperture while the expedition attempts to withdraw. Farrah, Rufus, and Gary hold part of the line against constructs and hostile essence users. A silver-rank enemy whose body is extensively grafted with metal overwhelms them, badly injuring Gary and severing Rufus's sword arm. With both men incapacitated, Farrah remains exposed. Danielle Geller reaches the collapsing line but cannot prevent the metal-grafted enemy from killing Farrah. She seriously wounds the killer and drives it away without defeating the enemy leadership. Gary carries Rufus to healers, who reattach his arm, but Rufus is devastated by Farrah's death. Humphrey, Rick Geller, and Phoebe Geller return with survivors, while Henry Geller is confirmed dead and Jonah Geller remains missing. Amir arrives after the battle and turns the surviving force toward evacuation and recovery. The immediate assault has ended, but the expedition has suffered heavy losses, the attackers have withdrawn without revealing their purpose, and several adventurers remain unaccounted for.

Story so far - through chapter 113 (this book)

The surviving expedition evacuates most personnel while Danielle Geller, Thalia Mercer, Amir Bahadir, and selected higher-rank adventurers investigate. Five living adventurers, including Jonah Geller and Thadwick Mercer, cannot be found through their tracking stones. The enemy had occupied the astral space for an extended period, but its leaders kill themselves when captured, preventing interrogation. Danielle and Amir locate and disrupt the network of astral nodes, ending the immediate instability. They preserve samples and one construct for study, but the network's purpose and the enemy's origin remain unknown. Farrah's body is placed in a casket for return to her family. Rufus's arm is healed, yet he blames himself for Farrah's death until Gary confronts him and leads him away from the camp with Jason. Amir restores Vincent Trenslow's camp authority and later returns Jason, Gary, and Rufus to Greenstone. Sophie and Belinda remain hidden in the Cloud Palace while Jason seeks a lawful path to secure Sophie's protection from Lucian Lamprey. Elspeth Arella faces investigation over the failed expedition. Jason remains a three-star Iron-rank adventurer, retains his possible route home, and has Amir's postponed iron-ranker venture ahead of him.

How does it end? (ending)

Danielle Geller and Amir Bahadir's forces locate and disrupt the astral-node network, ending the immediate instability and withdrawing the surviving expedition. The enemy operation remains unexplained, one construct is retained for study, and five adventurers - including Thadwick Mercer and Jonah Geller - remain missing and cannot be tracked. Farrah is dead, with her body preserved for return to her family. Rufus's severed arm has been reattached, but he is grieving and initially blames himself until Gary confronts that belief. Jason, Gary, and Rufus return to Greenstone together. Cassandra, Humphrey, Gabrielle, Clive, Danielle, Thalia, and other survivors remain tied to the expedition's aftermath. Sophie and Belinda stay hidden in Amir's Cloud Palace while Jason seeks to enforce his claim over Sophie's indenture and move her toward Adventure Society protection. Lucian Lamprey's pursuit, Clarissa Ventress's position, and Elspeth Arella's threatened authority remain open. Jason ends as a three-star Iron-rank adventurer. He still possesses the World Phoenix token that may eventually return him home, while Amir's postponed iron-ranker venture offers a nearer path forward.
