Heaven's Door recap

By J.N. Chaney, Terry Maggert

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

A recent Golden probe leads Dash and Cygnus to Beacon, where a hostile first encounter becomes an alliance with the shipbuilding Local Group. A Golden transfer network then exposes a wider enemy presence and brings Cygnus into contact with mustelid-like users of salvaged Harbinger technology. Dash wins their provisional trust, counters an attack by their feathered reptiloid rivals, and establishes a forward position. Beyond the ancient battlefield called the Cradle, Cygnus discovers Almost, captures a high-output Shroud, and builds a broader alien coalition. A partial chart points toward Golden space as upgraded Harbingers and Far-Flung forces strike Cygnus operations. At Almost, the coalition defeats an assault supported by three Golden cruisers, but 116 people die, including a Mako pilot whose attack breaks a cruiser. Almost survives under protection, Cygnus retains its new industrial resources, and the archetype enters a major rebuild. Dash ends the campaign by ordering visible Golden kill marks on its armor, openly announcing the next phase of his coreward war.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Newton Sawyer, known as Dash and as the Messenger, commands the Cygnus Realm in its war against the Golden. He pilots the dark-metal archetype with Sentinel, while Leira and the other mech pilots fight beside him. Custodian manages the forge that supports their expanding military and industrial effort. The ancient Unseen fought the Golden long before humanity's present conflict, leaving behind technology that Cygnus now uses. The Golden remain an active enemy, fielding Harbingers and working through aligned powers such as Clan Shirna. Cygnus begins this volume with an experienced command team, a captured carrier available for refitting, and a continuing need for dark metal and Q-cores to expand its forces.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Dash, Leira, Wei Ping, and Ragsdale recover a damaged Golden probe from a jungle cave. Its data points toward Beacon, while its dark metal supports new Q-cores, forge expansion, and a carrier-based Mako program under Conover. Cygnus approaches Beacon expecting a possible enemy link, but the local shipbuilders attack only because they mistake the dark-metal mechs for Golden forces. Their leader explains that Clan Shirna previously tried to buy ships with dark metal and threats. The three-system Local Group rejected that deal and begins moving toward an alliance with Cygnus. Two Harbingers then attack near Beacon. Dash and Leira destroy them, and the Local Group demonstrates effective long-range anti-missile weapons. The Local Group formally joins the war effort, offering ships, repairs, and construction capacity in exchange for Cygnus technology. The alliance suffers an immediate cost when concealed Golden micromines destroy two local ships and damage Cygnus equipment. Dash, Leira, Ragsdale, and Viktor remove the remaining mines, while Custodian expels and destroys them.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Cygnus starts clearing Beacon's mined outer system and authorizes its first Anchor hub, a step toward holding territory beyond the forge. A coreward survey reveals a Golden transfer station linking distant enclaves. Three stealth-coated Harbingers ambush Dash and Leira, but the mechs destroy them and preserve the station for study. Analysis shows that the attackers hide electromagnetic traces and imitate stellar neutrino emissions. Claw marks and components of very different ages suggest that an unknown people are rebuilding Golden machines. At the repaired station, Cygnus captures an unfamiliar frigate after seeing it attack Golden assets. Its surviving crew are sentient, mustelid-like beings who use repurposed Harbinger technology but deny knowing the Golden. Dash releases their commander and sibling-deputy to pursue talks. At Mark Deep, their elder seer deliberately draws in feathered reptiloid attackers to test Cygnus. Conover and Kristen divert dangerous EMP missiles into a radiation storm, and Dash disables the hostile flotilla. He then prevents its execution. The elder seer accepts his restraint, giving Cygnus preliminary trust while leaving the source of her people's technology undisclosed.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

The feathered reptiloid power declares war after the confrontation at Mark Deep. Dash answers with a counterstrike alongside the mustelid-like squadron. Benzel draws away the defenders while Dash, Leira, and Amy wreck a border moon's military infrastructure. The enemy commander turns an evacuation into a suicidal charge, forcing Cygnus to destroy the attacking freighters. Dash sends an ultimatum toward the enemy homeworld and considers the captured base for use as Point Mathilde. Meanwhile, Freya develops a food system for Cygnus's new guests, and practical cooperation begins replacing open suspicion. Their representatives describe estranged Far-Flung kin beyond the Cradle, a hazardous stellar nursery where earlier expeditions vanished. Dash and Leira scout it and discover evidence of a vast ancient war between the Golden and Unseen, including a hybrid mechanical arm containing an isolated, active AI. Beyond the Cradle they find Almost, a mixed human-alien settlement cut off for decades. Almost's guild leader identifies the Far-Flung as Golden allies and provides a lead to a dangerous installation. Cygnus defeats its defenses and captures a Shroud that can produce Q-cores much faster than the one it already controls.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Benzel secures the captured Shroud while Cygnus salvages the Cradle's dark metal and prepares a larger coreward presence. Custodian proposes a major archetype rebuild, the first self-assembling Anchor hub is authorized, and Dash names the new carrier Relentless. The expansion remains costly: upgraded Harbingers destroy the Striker and kill all nine aboard, although Viktor cripples one attacker with Slipwing and survives. Data recovered from a Golden AI produces a partial chart toward a defended region beyond Far-Flung territory. Dash orders stealth drones to map the route. A mixed enemy attack on Almost kills the guild leader's human adviser and leaves the leader injured, but the Cygnus garrison holds. A friendly alien burrow then contributes nine ships to the growing coalition. Before the allies can begin their own advance, Far-Flung forces arrive at Almost with Harbingers and three Golden cruisers. Dash drives the archetype and allied reserves through the enemy line. Conover breaches Golden shields, while Amy and the fleet exploit the opening. A Golden battery cripples the archetype's defenses and weapons, but a Mako pilot dies breaking open a cruiser, and the coalition destroys the remaining attack. The victory costs 116 lives and numerous ships. Almost survives, the major Cygnus leaders remain active, and the archetype begins its planned rebuild at the forge. Dash orders conspicuous Golden kill marks on its new red armor, abandoning concealment in favor of a recognizable challenge as Cygnus prepares to carry the war farther coreward.

How does it end? (ending)

Cygnus and its allies hold Almost after defeating Far-Flung forces backed by three Golden cruisers and Harbingers. The victory costs 116 lives, including a Mako pilot who dies breaking open a Golden cruiser, as well as three allied alien ships and several Cygnus vessels. Almost's guild leader survives her earlier injuries, but her human adviser is dead. The settlement remains under Cygnus protection while its defenses are rebuilt. Benzel holds the captured high-output Shroud, and Custodian continues the Anchor project, construction of the carrier Relentless, and the expansion enabled by salvaged dark metal. Dash, Leira, Sentinel, Amy, Conover, Wei Ping, Ragsdale, Viktor, and the wider coalition remain active. The route toward Golden space is still incomplete, the origins and aims of the new alien allies remain partly unresolved, and upgraded Harbingers are in service. At the forge, the archetype begins a larger rebuild. Dash orders its new red armor to display a visible record of Golden kills, turning the mech into an open declaration that he intends to carry the war coreward.
