The book's first-person narrator: a detached, calculating young man with heterochromia (one grey eye, one brown) who has cleared four prior floors of the lethal 'tutorial' on its hardest 'Hell' difficulty. He opens the book alone on the fifth floor, raising and protecting a young disciple while running relentless, physically dangerous experiments on his own mana and body. Fierce about protecting the few people he counts as his own, he holds most others at arm's length behind rigid emotional control and hides his true strength and rarest abilities from strangers.

A starved, guarded survivor of a ruined world when they met, she has grown under his harsh but devoted mentorship into an affectionate, increasingly capable student, still touch-starved and wary of strangers. Her wellbeing is the emotional center of the book's opening arc, and the reason its hardest choices are made.

A fully autonomous duplicate of Nathaniel, created from a recovered arcane-rarity mirror and identical to him in memory, skill, and personality up to the moment of copying, but cut off from the system's shop and quests and bound by an enforced countdown to his own disappearance. Openly self-interested at first, he becomes an uneasy partner as the two explore the fifth floor's fallen sky-fortress and the secrets buried around it.

The four former household servants - a butler, a housekeeper, a gardener, and an armorer - who effectively rule the colossal fallen sky-fortress Nathaniel and his disciple enter on the fifth floor. She fights alongside the group throughout the cross-difficulty tournament that dominates the book.

Isabella's older sister and a powerful manipulator of minds and emotions, long since reconciled with Nathaniel. Reunited with the group on the sixth floor, she is among its most dangerous and versatile members, able to seize and hold an opponent's mind outright, and she partners closely with the telepathic twins and with Nathaniel through the tournament's events.

A capable, versatile fighter of the group who works with self-made mana armor and shape-shifting weapons, reunited with the others on the sixth floor. Wry and easygoing off the battlefield, she provides much of the group's levity through the tournament while privately rating Nathaniel the most dangerous fighter she knows.

Telepathic twin brothers, near-impossible to tell apart, who relay messages and coordinate the group through their private mental link. Cautious and self-interested but invaluable, they are only partly reunited with Nathaniel: both are held captive by a rival faction on the sixth floor for much of the book, and freeing them is one of his stated goals.

A solo, non-group Hell-difficulty player long established as Nathaniel's nearest rival in raw individual power, met in person as the cross-difficulty tournament opens. A hard-difficulty fighter with a fearsome command of black mana and a volatile, unpredictable temper, met early in the tournament. She casually maims two harassers to establish that the tournament floor forbids death but not injury, yet builds a wary, genuine mutual respect with Nathaniel over their shared rare craft. She becomes the crowd's overall favorite to win.

A powerful, principled tournament competitor known by the handle Whitewing, who leads a faction pushing for fair, orderly conduct among the survivors. Outwardly upright and widely respected, he objects on principle to the group's more ruthless schemes and stands out as one of the very strongest fighters in the tournament field.

A hard-difficulty crafter marked by a striking silver-and-pink prosthetic arm, gifted to her by a champion, which she refuses to sell or trade at any price. A serious, highly skilled maker, she becomes an important counterpart to Nathaniel within the tournament's crafting circles.

An unnamed competitor from the easiest difficulty tier, revealed to have murdered every one of the 199 members of his own starting group and, unrestricted, to have climbed further up the tutorial's floors than anyone else known. Unusually powerful for his tier, he is held captive under a suppression collar while the tournament's leaders argue over what should be done with him.

A building-sized, golden-eyed, foul-mouthed telepathic wolf revealed to be Biscuit's own disciple, descended from an ancient, planet-devouring beast counted among the most powerful absolutes ever to live. It spars Nathaniel to an inconclusive draw and shares rare knowledge of the setting's cosmology before departing with mentorship advice.

Nathaniel's sister, seen on-page for the first time when her fighting avatar is summoned late in the tournament. She is confirmed as the champion of a separate, parallel cohort of Earth's tutorial, and displays an extreme regenerative, self-multiplying combat ability, regrowing from the smallest scrap of herself and splitting into many copies at once. Nathaniel refuses outright to ever fight her, describing her as someone who cared for him and suffered greatly on his behalf.
