In short (whole book)
Alone on the fifth floor, Nathaniel Gwyn raises his young disciple while exploring a fallen sky-fortress and the valley beyond it. Using a rare mirror he creates an independent clone of himself; together they uncover the fortress's captive master and the tragic history of the world-ruining 'Veil,' and the clone ultimately gives his own life to secure the disciple's future and slay the valley's calamity. Nathaniel sees the girl safely home, clears the floor, and reaches the sixth, reuniting with his scattered group for the tutorial's first cross-difficulty tournament. Competing secretly as both an anonymous crafter and the fighter 'No Name,' he wins or forces a forfeit in every scored event, finishing first overall and first in crafting, while his rivalry with the manufactured fighter Savant and his buried Earth history with Tess both go unresolved. In the finale his sister Victoria surfaces as the champion of a parallel round of Earth's tutorial, and Nathaniel, tricked by a false reward, is delivered into an ambush back on the fifth floor as the book ends.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
In the first three books, an ordinary young man, Nathaniel Gwyn, is pulled with a crowd of strangers into a lethal fantasy 'tutorial' run like a game of levels, skills and status windows, and locked to its deadliest setting, 'Hell.' Detached and calculating, he survives the monster-choked early floors by building himself into a fragile but devastating mana specialist, losing an arm and watching a friend die. An ancient, near-omnipotent woman, Lissandra, takes him in and trains him, then reveals herself as an artificial 'absolute,' destroys her own world so he can witness the truth, and dies. Reunited with the scattered survivors - among them the young girl Isabella and her mind-bending sister Sophie, who once tampered with his memory - Nathaniel fights on, ending the millennia-old guardians of a decaying city, unlocking a trial difficulty beyond Hell, and reaching a fourth floor ruled by the cat-like Lynthari, where his group builds a city base and his power swells enormously. He turns his strength into guild politics in the city of Virelia, learns the Lynthari are ancient invaders, and watches their matriarch spend her life to destroy a calamity-tier tree. When an ant Colony assaults the city his ally Hadwin is killed; Nathaniel loses a hand, then hunts the Colony's leader off-world and annihilates the hive. The fifth floor then separates every survivor onto a private instance with one task: raise a disciple. Assigned a starved half-demon child, Nathaniel trains her, fights a monstrous 'Veil Guardian' to a standstill, and reaches a colossal fallen sky-fortress with a mana-dense valley beyond, both unexplored.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
Alone on the fifth floor, Nathaniel continues raising and protecting his young disciple as the two explore the region beyond the fallen sky-fortress they reached at the last book's close. A hidden pre-war bunker yields a rare arcane artifact, a mirror that lets him create a fully independent duplicate of himself - a clone identical in memory and skill but cut off from the system's shop and quests and bound by a countdown to its own disappearance. Openly self-interested, the clone attempts an early betrayal, which Nathaniel rebuffs without retaliating, and the two settle into an uneasy partnership. Entering the colossal sky-fortress, they are received as guests by its ruling former servants - among them a butler, a housekeeper, and a gardener - who trade information over a tense dinner while carefully guarding the source of the fortress's power. Nathaniel uncovers the truth behind their hospitality: the servants have subjugated their own former master, whose still-living, mutilated body is fused to the fortress's central crystal, his beating heart the engine that keeps it aloft. When that secret is threatened with exposure, the courteous welcome collapses into open hostility.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
The standoff at the fortress settles into an uneasy negotiated cooperation with its servants, a fourth of whom - an armorer - now steps forward. Tracing the valley's strange mana to its source, Nathaniel and the clone break into a hidden pre-war facility built by this world's Enchanters. Inside they find an intact, undamaged corpse and revive it into a skilled native blacksmith, who wakes to learn that a century has passed and his wife, daughter, and world are gone. He recounts the war behind the planet's ruin: his people's own guild rushed the activation of a world-spanning mana construct, 'the Veil,' out of political fear even as their side was winning, and it devastated everything. He warns Nathaniel to hide his rarest abilities, outfits the group with protective gear, and guides them toward the facility's true core - where he discovers the body of his own father, tied to the sabotage that had cracked it. Overwhelmed by grief, the blacksmith seals the crack with a self-made alloy at the cost of his own life. Meanwhile the mysterious ruler-linked 'intent' that has shadowed Nathaniel since the previous floor makes direct contact for the first time this book, speaking through a corpse and taking a pointed interest in the clone.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
With the blacksmith dead, Nathaniel executes a backup plan: channeling the pre-war facility's stored mana into the fortress's failing core, at the cost of his own temporary blindness. The colossal sky-fortress takes flight for the first time in a century and is steered to safety. Nathaniel kills the increasingly suspicious armorer pre-emptively, and the remaining servants raise no objection. The clone, having quietly given up on his own survival, devotes his last days to securing the disciple's future: he transplants one of his own eyes into her as a vessel for a piece of himself, bargaining with the ruler-linked intent for help - and is deceived. Holding up his end even after learning the intent lied, the clone dies alone defeating the valley's sleeping calamity, an enormous divine-beast far above his level, spending limbs and memories through a unique sacrifice skill. At the very end an unidentified, far more powerful entity intervenes, forbidding the intent from ever harming the disciple. Nathaniel sees the girl safely home, completes the fifth floor, and steps onto the sixth, where he reunites at last with his scattered group.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
On the sixth floor, the reunion proves incomplete: the telepathic twins are held captive by a rival faction there, and freeing them becomes one of Nathaniel's stated goals. The tutorial then announces something unprecedented: its first cross-difficulty tournament, gathering survivors from every difficulty tier. The rest of the group enters as a team, with Tess steering their strategy. Nathaniel quietly builds a second, secret identity as an anonymous crafter, selling gear at the top of the tournament's maker rankings while hiding his true strength as a fighter. He meets several of the field's standouts in person: Savant, the solo player long established as his nearest rival; Tacita, a volatile hard-difficulty master of black mana who casually maims two harassers to prove that the tournament floor forbids death but not injury; and Whitewing, a principled, widely respected competitor who leads a faction pushing for orderly conduct. Testing a newly fused skill with his dangerous black mana, Nathaniel nearly triggers an uncontrolled detonation, a reminder of how little margin his experiments leave him. The events are announced, and the group settles in for a long competition spread across the tournament's difficulty-restricted brackets.
Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)
The tournament's first event, a survival contest inside a shared domain, pits the competitors against one another and the environment at once. Nathaniel fights his way to the front but is edged out at the very end by Savant in an extremely close final clash, taking second place overall while leading on points. The event surfaces painful history on both sides. Savant's origin is revealed: abandoned to goblins on the first floor as a boy, he lost a leg and grafted a goblin's on in its place, the beginning of a body remade far beyond the human. And through Tess's own perspective the group glimpses a piece of Nathaniel's childhood on Earth - that he was known, and shunned, as 'the brother of a murderer.' Several group members, including Sophie and Lily, are eliminated over the course of the event, though under tournament rules death inside it is not permanent. Nathaniel ends narrowly beaten but unbroken, more fixated than ever on measuring himself against Savant.
Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)
The second event is a siege: teams defend a fortress against escalating monster waves. Nathaniel wins it outright, almost single-handedly, by destroying two of the assault's worst threats - a colossal serpent that shatters the ground, and a creature that reanimates the fallen as its own army - at severe personal cost. Biscuit plays a decisive part in finishing the serpent. Along the way Nathaniel independently rediscovers a lost skill, restoring a piece of his older toolkit. The victory lifts his standing sharply and hardens the field's respect for the anonymous 'No Name' fighter, even as few connect him to the secret crafter topping the maker rankings. The group's dynamics keep shifting around him: Tess presses her long-term project of building alliances to protect everyone's families once the tutorial ends, while Kim Min-Jae's growing power feeds an arrogance that begins to grate on those around him.
Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)
A third event begins, in which competitors send restricted avatars against a gauntlet of challengers. It runs alongside a subplot: a captive mass murderer, an easy-difficulty player who killed every member of his own starting group and climbed further up the floors than anyone else present, is held under a suppression collar while the leaders argue over his fate - Tess wanting him made an example of, Whitewing objecting on principle, nothing settled. Nathaniel meets Miwa, a hard-difficulty crafter with a champion-gifted prosthetic arm she will not sell at any price. The book's most personal thread finally surfaces: Nathaniel and Tess dated on Earth as teenagers, her first relationship, and he broke her heart by using her as an alibi for something he never explained and never apologized for. She withholds the specifics even from the group and presses him to account for himself, which he does not do.
Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)
Nathaniel wins the third event outright, sending a deliberately underestimated avatar to victory behind a disinformation campaign. More of the field's hidden depths come into view. Whitewing's dark past is exposed: he once killed roughly a hundred natives, children among them, over resources on an earlier floor, and has carried the guilt since. Biscuit reveals a disciple of his own - an enormous, foul-mouthed telepathic wolf descended from an ancient planet-devouring beast - who spars Nathaniel to a draw and lays out a piece of the setting's cosmology: that fourteen 'rulers' stand behind its powers, and that Nathaniel's own command of black mana is exceptionally, perhaps dangerously, rare. The captive murderer abruptly vanishes from the tournament entirely, the population counts implying he leapt straight from easy to Hell difficulty, an escalation only a ruler could enable. Nathaniel's disciple is briefly summoned to visit for a single day, warming cautiously to the group and sparring with Tacita. And Nathaniel finally offers Tess an apology, which she refuses to accept, telling him she can feel it is not yet sincere and means to draw the reckoning out.
Story so far - through chapter 86 (this book)
The fourth event is a straight one-on-one dueling bracket, and its final rounds carry an unexplained change: inside the arena, death is briefly permitted. Fighting as 'No Name,' Nathaniel cuts through the field - past Whitewing in a brutal semifinal - to reach Savant in the final. Their fight is enormously destructive, and Nathaniel wins, but Savant abruptly forfeits rather than being finished, denying him a clean end to the rivalry and leaving him furious and unsatisfied. Savant is revealed, in these rounds, to be substantially a manufactured being: his heart, an arm, a leg and an eye all taken from more powerful creatures, tied to disturbing body-modification research. Tacita is nearly killed reaching the semifinal and is saved off-arena by Lily and Nathaniel. And Nathaniel finally lets one person past his guard: after crafting openly in front of Miwa, he confirms to her that he is the anonymous maker atop the crafting rankings, and the two trade knowledge, though she still refuses to part with her arm.
Story so far - through chapter 89 (this book)
The tournament's fifth and final event, the rewardless 'Chronicle of the Past,' lets competitors challenge the champions of Earth's earlier tutorial 'rounds.' Its great revelation is personal: Nathaniel's estranged sister, Victoria, is confirmed as the champion of a separate, parallel round of Earth's tutorial, and the group learns through Lily's brutal, near-fatal duel against her avatar that Victoria wields an extreme regenerative, self-multiplying power - regrowing from a single scrap of herself and splitting into many copies. Nathaniel refuses outright to fight her. The tournament closes with him first overall and first in the crafting rankings, banking two unused reward tokens, and with the announcement that the next tournament, two years off, will bring every parallel round of Earth's tutorial together at once. Then the ending turns: urged by Tess, Nathaniel accepts what he believes is a further reward - an invitation to become someone's disciple - only for it to prove a deception. He is delivered instead into an ambush back on the fifth floor, sensing three presences waiting: the mass murderer who vanished months earlier, an unidentified tall, thorny woman, and Biscuit's black wolf. Realizing this was never part of his rewards, the book ends there, unresolved. His group remains together on the sixth floor with the captive twins still to free, and a separate portent - a Moon-sized spider now visible from Earth - hangs over what comes next.
How does it end? (ending)
Book four ends on the sixth floor at the close of the tutorial's first cross-difficulty tournament - the fifth-floor bastion arc having resolved earlier, with the clone's death, the fortress's rescue, and the disciple's safe return home. Nathaniel finishes first overall and first in the crafting rankings, banking two unused reward tokens. Several long threads advance without closing: his painful Earth history with Tess is finally aired but pointedly not repaired, as she refuses his apology; his secret crafter identity is shared with Miwa alone; and his rival Savant, beaten but never truly finished, is revealed as a manufactured being and then vanishes from the grounds. Biscuit's ancient wolf disciple, and the confirmation that Nathaniel's black mana is dangerously rare, open new lore. The book's real hinge is its last chapter: his sister Victoria is confirmed as the champion of a separate, parallel round of Earth's tutorial, and the closing announcement that the next tournament will unite all rounds frames his own struggle as part of something far larger. Tricked into accepting a false disciple-summons reward, Nathaniel is delivered into an ambush back on the fifth floor, sensing the vanished mass murderer, an unidentified tall and thorny woman, and Biscuit's black wolf - and the book stops there. His group is intact and together on the sixth floor, but the telepathic twins remain captive under a rival faction, their rescue now left to Tess and the others in his absence. A separate Earth portent, a Moon-sized spider, is left hanging for the next book.
