In short (whole book)
Wistram's pursuit of Pisces follows the Horns back to Liscor, where the team works on a road around the increasingly dangerous Bloodfields. A faction withdraws from the chase, but a hostile mage forces a duel that is interrupted when an adult Creller and its swarm attack. The Horns and Liscor's defenders suffer severe losses before Pisces and Ceria create a combined construct, Yvlon breaks the creature's armor, and Ksmvr delivers the killing blow. The Horns earn Gold Rank and plan to travel north. In parallel, Sir Solstice protects a goblin tribe while passing as a human knight, Foliana stops an academy bombing, and Ryoka later rescues eight Earth arrivals from an attack on Magnolia Reinhart's estate. Toren reaches the ruined inn, injures Erin, and then apparently ends his own animation. An unseen servant removes his still-sparking skull as the inn collapses. Erin survives, reaches level 40, and gains a sanctuary garden.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Erin Solstice, an Earth-born innkeeper near Liscor, made the Wandering Inn a refuge for an unusual household and supported the Horns of Hammerad. Her magical door linked the inn to distant locations. The Horns included Ceria, their ice-mage captain; Pisces, a necromancer specializing in bone; Yvlon, a fighter with damaged metal-infused arms; and Ksmvr, an Antinium skirmisher. Wistram was pursuing Pisces, placing both his team and Erin under pressure. Toren, the sentient skeleton Erin once animated, had become an independent commander of undead within Liscor's dungeon. Ryoka Griffin, another person from Earth, travelled as a classless courier. Liscor's Watch Captain Zevara held the one-armed Minotaur Calruz in custody while questions about his conduct in the dungeon remained unsettled. Mrsha lived under Erin's protection, while Klbkch and Relc served in Liscor's Watch.
Story so far - through chapter 3 (this book)
Wistram continues to pursue Pisces, although Cognita forces the academy to acknowledge that both he and Ceria hold graduate status. Elsewhere at Wistram, an Earth-born Black Mage named Erin is among a group treated as guests but forbidden to leave the island. Ryoka retrieves the warhound Mousy, places the dog with the Pithfire Hounds, and obtains a lead to adventurers supported by Magnolia Reinhart. The Order of Seasons fails to kill the Stitch Witch. She escapes through hostages, and the Order decides that public fear would only strengthen her. The knights then turn toward ogre raiders. Dame Talia's group joins an armored Goblin Slayer who helps defeat an ogre band, though Sir Eldene dies in the battle. The hunter is secretly the hobgoblin Rabbit Eater. He saves the Rolling Rocks tribe, fabricates evidence of its destruction, and sends it toward refuge. Accepted by the knights as Sir Solstice, he gains the Knight class and continues north with his identity concealed.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Erin cannot persuade Grimalkin to oppose Wistram without greater leverage. Palt apologizes for his team's conduct but remains conditionally barred from the inn. After a Gnoll steals Erin's valuable golden flowers, Mrsha identifies the thief and Klbkch leads T'Kern and Jersey in recovering them. The case also exposes a possible high-level criminal presence in Liscor. Klbkch is revealed as both a senior Watch guardsman and the Hive's Revelantor. He uses a dangerous dungeon incursion to train autonomous Antinium commanders, treating hundreds of ordinary Antinium as expendable. Meanwhile, the Horns return publicly with Pisces. Ceria defends him, and Liscor's guildmistress refuses to permit bounty hunting in the city. Shared work against face-eater moths begins to reduce other adventurers' distrust. Zevara continues investigating Calruz rather than accepting Wistram's judgment as final. Toren learns that Erin is alive, abandons his masked identity, and resolves to seek her. The undead agent Ijvani also receives orders from Oskarosh to watch Pisces, Wistram, and the inn while preparing a teleportation route.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Foliana is sent by Niers Astoragon to stop a planned attack on his academy. Using food associated with her target to trace a naga infiltrator, she kills the attacker before a gauntlet containing linked siege spells can be planted. She secures the weapon and leaves a charmed Dullahan servant to be investigated. The claim that Magnolia Reinhart authorized the operation appears false. The Players of Selim carry Erin's plays north. Wesle and the troupe's lead actress win audiences in Sovex and Inverisil, and a green-haired mage joins after driving away robbers. Magnolia's servants take notice of the company's success. Around Liscor, Erin's magical door supports construction of a road skirting the Bloodfields. Erin agrees to negotiate with a Wistram faction for protection while refusing to share weapon designs from Earth. Red pollen then draws two adventurers into a Watcher Tree. The Horns rescue them and escape an insect swarm with Wistram's help, improving the team's reputation. Liscor reroutes the road farther away, but signs suggest that a greater danger has awakened within the Bloodfields.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Although one Wistram faction ends its pursuit, a hostile Aegiscaster defies the decision and challenges the Horns at the roadworks. Pisces insists that he should be judged by his choices rather than his class. He duels the Aegiscaster while Ceria faces an Oldblood Drake and Yvlon fights a Minotaur. Yvlon forces her opponent to yield, and Pisces begins wearing down the Aegiscaster's defenses. The duel ends when an adult Creller and thousands of smaller creatures erupt from the Bloodfields. The Horns and other adventurers remain behind to delay them while workers flee toward Erin's door. Crellers pour through the doorway and infest the Wandering Inn. Relc, the Halfseekers, the Watch, and Antinium forces evacuate residents and counterattack, suffering deaths and serious injuries. Zevara arms Calruz and sends him into the building, where he draws the creatures away long enough for defenders to breach the inn. The building is devastated but cleared. The adult Creller remains outside with the Horns, and a relief force led by Zevara and Grimalkin enters the Bloodfields. At the same time, Toren leaves the dungeon and heads for Erin.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
The Horns and the remaining adventurers hold the Creller swarm while civilians escape. The adult severs Yvlon's right arm, and Ksmvr refuses to abandon her. When the inn door finally opens, many defenders die during the retreat. Pisces briefly carries the Wistram Aegiscaster away but chooses to return to his team. He and Ceria link their magic to rebuild a bone construct inside heavy ice. The combined behemoth pins the adult long enough for Yvlon to break its head armor and Ksmvr to drive her sword into its brain. The adult Creller is confirmed dead, and Liscor begins hunting survivors and destroying eggs and remains. Yvlon's arm is reattached but remains weak. The guild promotes the Horns to Gold Rank, and the team directs its bounty to the families of those killed. The hostile Wistram group mourns its Drake member and ends the pursuit of Pisces, though its leader does not forgive him. Calruz remains a prisoner but accepts dangerous Watch labor as a chance at redemption. The recovering Horns plan to seek work north through Erin's door. When Erin enters the ruined inn alone, Toren is waiting inside.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Several distant conflicts remain in motion. A captured High Mage says the Blighted King's proposed ritual would kill one million unborn children and might open a path to another world. Flos receives refugees, veteran troops, and half-giant nomads while rebuilding his kingdom, and considers hiring a force against the mage academy holding a missing vassal. Two Antinium prognosticators from another Hive arrive in Liscor. Ryoka finds eight people from Earth living under Magnolia Reinhart's protection. When assassins attack the estate, she leads them away and sends them toward Erin's inn. At the Wandering Inn, Toren confronts Erin over their broken bond and the deaths he caused. He badly injures her but stops short of killing her, then removes his own skull in apparent self-destruction. An unseen servant of a necromancer carries away his remains, and a spark in the skull leaves his survival unresolved. The inn collapses around Erin, but she lives. Grieving and recognizing too late that Toren had sought her care, she reaches level 40 as an innkeeper and gains a sanctuary garden and a new memory-linked ability. The Horns remain Gold-rank and intend to travel north, while Liscor continues recovering from the Creller disaster.
How does it end? (ending)
Liscor survives the Creller outbreak, and the Horns kill the adult creature before receiving Gold Rank. The team remains together and plans to seek work to the north, although Ceria and Pisces are depleted and Yvlon's reattached arm is weak. Calruz remains imprisoned but accepts dangerous Watch work as a path toward redemption. Erin survives Toren's attack, but the Wandering Inn collapses around her. She reaches level 40 and gains a sanctuary garden. Toren removes his own skull and appears to end his animation, yet an unseen necromancer's servant carries away the remains and a spark persists. Ryoka sends eight displaced people from Earth toward Erin after assassins attack Magnolia Reinhart's estate. Elsewhere, Sir Solstice continues north with his hobgoblin identity concealed, Foliana has prevented the academy bombing, and Flos considers action against the academy holding a missing vassal. Wistram's pursuit has stopped for now, but suspicion of Pisces, the danger in the Bloodfields, Ijvani's surveillance, the Stitch Witch, and the attack on Magnolia's estate remain unresolved.
