Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Kael became a death wizard with access to unusual ether power and fought the ancient faction now threatening the world. He formed close bonds with Max, the dragons, a vampire companion, and Ember, his wife. Ember died but continued trying to protect Kael and the afterlife from within the divine realm. Kael also carried lasting injuries, including a broken blade and poison that ordinary healing had not removed. The wider struggle left several dangerous legacies. Ancient seals and strongholds held enemies and forgotten powers, while a magical catastrophe had altered the world's geography. The goddess of death became Kael's powerful but unpredictable ally. Queen Bael and other rulers attempted to build a coalition for the coming war. The true scale of the enemy's return, the condition of the world's magic, and the means of countering ancient magic all remained uncertain.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Kael joins the goddess of death and two dragons in an attack on an enemy settlement near a wound in the world's magic. When the goddess kills civilians and tortures survivors, Kael resists her and loses her direct support. He decides to seek independent allies instead of joining the existing diplomatic coalition, which Queen Bael and Max continue pursuing. Elisa's magical marks reveal that a death wizard has returned from the afterlife. At the Black Ark, Kael finds the weakened survivor and learns that she brought back a comatose boy to protect him from demonic corruption. The boy is Kael's afterlife-born son. Kael takes them both into hiding and considers Cassie a possible guardian for the refuge. Meanwhile, a weakened dragon seal releases a formidable ancient battle force, whose lone remaining warrior nearly kills the dragon queen. Kael then tries to reach a plague-stricken magus through a defensive altar, but altered memory magic traps him in a traumatic vision. A Fae ambassador severs the link before he falls into a coma, forcing him to postpone the attempt.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Inara secretly awakens Gideon's Elder Blood after showing him a possible invasion across the Black Chasm. Ember witnesses this forbidden intervention while hiding in the divine realm. The ancient faction, meanwhile, converts a human researcher's resurrection proposal into a program for binding souls into objects and sentient weapons. After Ember's memorial, Kael follows evidence of ancient cities where the world's power may be reached. Cassie chooses to join his household despite Elisa's opposition. Separate secrets deepen the crisis: the real human Animus Seal is being held shut by six necromancers who are burning out, and the lost forge that might replace them has not been found. Near Kael's refuge, a magical bear and a spreading illness expose his poor control over combined ether and death magic. In deep caves, he learns to cooperate with his sentient silver-scaled magic and destroys cursed statues controlling attacking creatures, though twelve people die during the operation. On the next leg of his journey, Kael expels a possessing demon queen from a fortress commander. The group then discovers that an ancient platform capable of opening a demon portal has been stolen from a sealed vault.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
The Broken Blade guild fractures, and dissidents restore assassination contracts on Kael, Max, and Queen Bael. The headmistress sends loyal agents to protect the targets, but Kael does not know an attack is approaching. At the same time, Max and Queen Bael sail toward a guarded foreign port to seek another military alliance. In the divine realm, Ember learns that death bars her ordinary return to the mortal world. She accepts Inara's protection and agrees to help an impaired seer goddess. Through a place that reveals past, present, and possible futures, Ember detects a killer closing on Kael and manages to touch the back of his neck as a warning. The warning comes too late to prevent injury. An assassin strikes Kael with a barbed wooden dagger carrying fatal heartwood toxin. His travelling assassin uses his only antidote and saves him. Local underworld leaders then shelter the party in an ancient underground research station. With help from the spirit in his mind, Kael opens its sealed laboratory and finds a magical map of ancient energy-leak sites, including possible cities of power.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Queen Bael formally asks the port's ruling family for military aid, but the hosts value neutrality and mercenary trade. An ancient delegation arrives under parley, and an internal attack on Max and the port commander suggests that hostile outcasts are already operating inside the city. The alliance decision remains unsettled. Loyal guild agents secretly prevent a second attempt on Kael's life. Kael updates the ancient map to match the world's post-cataclysm geography, revealing a large grey marker on a northern island. He and his vampire companion make the island their urgent destination, unaware that a demon-serving coven has begun following him. The enemy's strength grows sharply. The human researcher and an ancient priestess continue experiments aimed at moving souls between bodies or objects. The faction's leader recruits an elite commander released from stasis, along with nearly two thousand surviving troops, and directs them against Kael and allied ancient bloodlines. Kael, Kenna, and his vampire companion join Shasta's ship. Shasta agrees to carry them north, but warns that royal permission and a seer's judgment stand between Kael and the island fortress.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
The northern island's rulers recognize Kael as a member of Shasta's clan and grant him permission to seek the runemaster fortress, provided his party uses no magic. Outlaws led by Shasta's expelled uncle ambush them on the journey. The island seer rescues the wounded group and reveals that the ancient anchor holding the island in place is failing. Beneath the fortress, Kael enters a vision of the anchor's creation. Ember and Inara covertly help him reach the needed memory. Using his ether power, blood from the ancient island wizard, and the seer's authorization, Kael passes the anchor's defenses, refills its failing heartstone, and stops the island's tremors. The recovered history also reveals that the map's green markers are magical wellsprings. Kael decides that healing them could strengthen allied magic against the enemy. As Kael prepares to travel toward the swamp wells, hostile coven agents arrange pursuit. Elsewhere, Kael's rulers investigate whether a lost forge is connected to a large bloodstone and a demon woman's earlier activity. At the port banquet, a coordinated coup incapacitates the guests. Max surrenders to protect Queen Bael, and their delegation is imprisoned.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
Guided by the Black Hollow shaman, Kael's party reaches a wellspring corrupted by old damage and the ancient enemy's reactive silver magic. Kael heals it with ether power, restoring a major flow of magic to the world and renewing his own strength. The surge also makes his death magic and shield dangerously unstable. When underground predators and parasite-bearing cave warriors attack, his emergency transit throws the group onto a plateau near their entrance. Kenna and the half-blood channeler survive infected bites after the shaman extracts the parasites, and he gives Kael a means to summon him for the remaining wells. His people's decision about joining the wider war remains open. A new coven leader then ambushes the exhausted Kael with demon venom and locks a suppression collar around him. She transfers his ether energy into an old heartstone, seals it with demonic magic, and sends it away with a courier. Kael's bird kills the coven leader before she can finish the attack. Kael is alive, but poisoned, weakened, and still collared as his vampire companion begins helping him. Queen Bael and Max remain captives, while the enemy's elite army and soul-transfer research continue.
