Paige Winterbourne and Lucas Cortez are building an independent life with Savannah when young people connected to the corporate sorcerer Cabals begin to die. Benicio Cortez asks his estranged son to investigate. Paige persuades Lucas to take the case, and they enter a Miami world of family rivalry, private security, and institutions that treat their children as both heirs and assets. Necromancer Jaime Vegas, vampire Cassandra DuCharme, Elena Michaels, and other allies help them follow evidence that crosses supernatural communities and reaches into an older search for unnatural longevity. Cabal suspicion produces misleading suspects while the murderer continues selecting vulnerable targets. Paige and Lucas eventually expose the supernatural criminals behind the campaign, rescue the endangered survivor, and stop the killings. They retain their independence and return to Savannah, but Lucas's successful intervention changes his relationship with Benicio and leaves the couple more deeply connected to the larger supernatural network.

Previously in Paige's story: Ruth Winterbourne died during the destruction of a human research compound that imprisoned supernatural people, leaving Paige guardian to Ruth's ward, Savannah Levine. Savannah's biological father, Kristof Nast, then used his sorcerer Cabal to seek custody. Sorcerer lawyer Lucas Cortez helped Paige uncover a campaign manipulated by the half-demon Leah O'Donnell. Kristof and Leah were killed in the final conflict. Paige kept Savannah but broke with the American Coven after its elders valued secrecy and prejudice over protecting them. She and Lucas became romantic and professional partners, creating a household outside both the Coven and the Cabals.

Paige, Lucas, and Savannah are establishing a shared life when Benicio Cortez intrudes with a case involving murdered teenagers connected to the sorcerer Cabals. Lucas assumes his father is using the deaths to draw him back into the family organization and refuses the offer. Paige is less willing to leave the killings to institutions that may place reputation before victims, and she presses Lucas to reconsider. They agree to investigate without surrendering their independence and travel to Miami, where Cortez wealth, security, and internal family competition shape every interview. The arrangement makes Lucas's divided position unavoidable: the Cabal sees him as Benicio's son and a potential heir even though he insists on acting as an outside lawyer.

In Miami, Paige and Lucas establish that the deaths follow a deliberate pattern among young people whose families serve or belong to the Cabals. The organizations have information and resources unavailable to ordinary police, but their rivalries also encourage secrecy, blame, and selective disclosure. Benicio provides access while continuing to maneuver Lucas toward the Cortez family. Troy Morgan handles security, and the danger to Cabal children makes even Lucas a possible target. When evidence cannot be recovered from living witnesses, the investigators turn to necromancer Jaime Vegas. Her genuine abilities are more useful than her public stage image suggests, and contact with the dead opens new directions without producing a simple identification of the killer.

The investigation widens as another disappearance proves that the murderer can reach people despite Cabal protection. Paige and Lucas use methods the corporations would not authorize, compare competing explanations, and seek intermediaries who can move between supernatural factions. The evidence keeps pointing toward someone who understands both the victims' protected world and the weaknesses in Cabal security. Jaime's necromancy supplies fragments rather than a complete account, while Cassandra's involvement raises the possibility that the pattern extends beyond sorcerer politics. Paige also has to consider Savannah's safety: the girl is connected to two Cabal families and is precisely the kind of powerful young supernatural whom an organized predator might value.

Paige and Lucas test the leading suspects and discover that the murders cannot be explained by an ordinary struggle among the Cabals. Elena Michaels contributes an investigator's understanding of predators, and the trail moves through vampire history and the limits of supernatural longevity. Cassandra initially withholds personal information, but the case forces her to explain rules and vulnerabilities that vampires usually keep private. The inquiry reaches New Orleans and names from an older story, suggesting that the present crimes may be connected to people who have spent years seeking a way around death. The broader supernatural council becomes relevant, yet Paige and Lucas remain responsible for separating useful history from diversions planted around the current victims.

The search centers on Edward and Natasha and on a pursuit of extended life that has crossed both magical practice and violent crime. Paige follows the historical evidence while Lucas tries to protect the living targets, but the people they are pursuing understand how to use old stories, false identities, and supernatural prejudice as cover. A direct encounter confirms that the threat is real and personal, not merely a piece of vampire history. At the same time, clear supernatural insight carries its own risks, and information gained through visions or the dead does not make the killer easy to contain. Paige and Lucas now know that an endangered young person is part of a larger plan and that waiting for Cabal procedure will leave the murderer time to act.

Paige, Lucas, and their allies close in, but an apparent resolution fails to end the danger. The murder campaign has relied on layered identities and on the assumption that the Cabals will pursue one another instead of recognizing an outside design. A confrontation leaves the investigators with incomplete certainty about who is dead, who remains in control, and which intended victim is still exposed. Jeremy Danvers and other allies from beyond the Cabals join the effort, giving Paige support that Benicio's organization alone cannot provide. The case moves toward a final standoff in which the murderer can no longer be treated as a remote historical figure or a problem contained by corporate security.

The surviving conspirator uses deception and a missing young person to force a final confrontation. Paige and Lucas combine their own magic with help from Jeremy and the werewolves, refusing a plan that would preserve institutional safety by abandoning the immediate victim. The supernatural criminals behind the killings are exposed and stopped, the intended survivor is recovered, and Savannah remains safe. The murders therefore end without the Cabals gaining the simple rival-family explanation many of their leaders expected. Lucas does not accept control by Benicio or join the Cortez organization, but the investigation changes the absolute terms of their estrangement: he has protected people within his father's world while acting by his own principles. Paige and Lucas return to their independent household and work, strengthened by a network that now includes witches, sorcerers, necromancers, vampires, and werewolves.

The investigation ultimately reveals that the killings are not simply an attack by one Cabal on another. They are tied to supernatural criminals pursuing continued life and power, and the apparent answers supplied by Cabal politics repeatedly conceal the more personal threat. Paige, Lucas, and their allies survive the final trap, the remaining intended victim is recovered, and the people responsible for the murder campaign are stopped. Savannah is safe, as are the young people the investigators can still protect. The case does not reconcile Lucas with the institution he distrusts, but it forces him to deal with Benicio as a father and with the practical consequences of being a Cortez. Paige and Lucas return to their independent life and work together, now with stronger connections to Jaime, Cassandra, the werewolf Pack, and other parts of the supernatural world. Benicio has gained neither Lucas's obedience nor his return to the Cabal, but the complete estrangement between them has begun to soften.
