Bill Henderson leads Omega through prison rescues and a search for a permanent human refuge while the Ornu succession, the Perseids, and a surviving Konami leader gather against him. Millions of abandoned people, Roughback allies, a breakaway species, and descendants of Corey Henderson's hidden colony rebellion join the migration. Their promised world, Azure, is occupied by parasitic Voidlings, forcing a combined battle on the moon, inside enemy ships, and aboard Omega. Funnybone and Splat die, but Omega kills the Konami leader and the allied fleet wins after Pertinax and the young emperor kill each other. Eight months later, Azure is a difficult but viable settlement and Gordon Henderson has died. Bina and Alden Stone lead much of the settlement work, while Bill agrees to depart after the anniversary with Omega, Val, Tobias, and Judith to guard humanity against unresolved external threats.

Previously: Bill Henderson commands the sentient warship Omega as humanity resists Ornu rule. The ship has become both a powerful weapon and a refuge for people escaping captivity. Bina Chakravarti serves among Bill's senior officers, while Alden Stone leads the Marines and Val advises Bill through Omega's simulated environment. Bill's family and companions have paid heavily for rebellion, and the struggle has left survivors divided over whether to keep fighting or seek safety. Omega now carries civilians as well as combatants, making every military decision a question of survival for the displaced human population.

Omega raids Ornu prison mines to free enslaved humans, but the first operation ends with overseers venting most prisoners before Stone's Marines can reach them. Bill refuses demands from civilian politicians to abandon the rescue campaign, although repeated short-range jumps threaten Omega's structure. At the Ornu capital, Pertinax avoids punishment for his earlier failure by proposing Consul Philo as a scapegoat. An escaped former Signifier and his disguised Konami ally watch as Philo is publicly executed. The former Signifier, who is Philo's nephew, turns toward revenge. Meanwhile, Bina rebuilds some trust by proposing an attack on a desert mining world used to exile inconvenient Ornu officials, and Bill approves the plan.

The desert-world attack becomes a trap. Omega faces an artillery freighter and waves of warships while Stone's Marines board the freighter. With fires spreading and the short-range jump drive near its limit, Bill prepares to abandon the boarding party if necessary. Civilian volunteers organize firefighting and medical aid, while political opponents quietly discuss surrender or a bridge takeover. Stone's team overcomes injuries and sealed hatches, captures the freighter's bridge, and turns its guns on the attackers. Tull's Roughback fleet arrives to destroy the remaining enemy ships. Omega escapes to Kotbulo for repairs, and the Marines take the damaged freighter separately after using it to bombard the Ornu settlement and create an opening for its human prisoners.

The former Ornu emperor is assassinated in his palace while the escaped former Signifier watches. His son takes the throne, purges rivals, kills his brother, and makes Omega his principal external target. Bill delays immediate settlement long enough to recruit allies, gaining a commitment from many Roughbacks but failing with two other potential partners. The Konami accomplice and the former Signifier recover a hidden craft and travel ahead to Omega's intended destination, where the Konami figure summons obedient sentient void servants. Bill and Bina also seek help from a species living almost entirely in simulation, but its moderators refuse to act. When Omega returns to the ruined Solar System, it discovers up to three million scattered human survivors. The ship faces an urgent mass evacuation while unidentified ships converge and some human stations threaten it.

Surrounded near Mars, Omega receives an offer from a delegation breaking with the Perseid-Ornu alignment. The new partners provide transports, repair capacity, intelligence, and logistical support, allowing part of Omega's population to disperse among their ships. When a mixed enemy fleet approaches, Omega cripples it, but Bill declines pursuit. Responsibility for roughly two million additional refugees has changed his priority from attacking the Imperial capital to securing a home. The senior crew accepts a plan to return to the allies, gather the Roughbacks, and then continue toward the promised system. Elsewhere, the Konami leader restores an ancient facility with Voidling labor, questions the former Signifier about Omega, and deploys extensive defenses around the destination.

During the journey, Rose seizes an allied transport with human collaborators and takes its crew hostage. Bill refuses to destroy the vessel or expend Omega's last safe jump to chase it. At the destination, scans reveal a defended world. Val explains that parasitic Voidlings destroyed the Konami and now control the planet, feeding on the suffering of host species. The alliance attacks before the orbital defenses can be completed, but fragmenting Voidling craft and lunar guns break its formation. Rose accepts the Konami leader's offer of power and gives Voidlings access to the captured ship. They drain and incapacitate him, while other vessels begin admitting the parasites. Refusing a victory that sacrifices allied crews, Bill orders a retreat.

A scouting party led by Tim Bowman contacts Omega from hidden human colonies descended from prisoners who escaped Langer 3 more than thirty years earlier. The colonists reveal that Bill's grandfather, Corey Henderson, led the breakout that made their survival possible. Their floating settlements have remained concealed inside asteroids, sustaining themselves with patched machinery, small farms, and a fleet of hundreds of craft. Gordon and Miriam witness the free community created by Corey's rebellion. Bill confronts Val for concealing this history. Val confirms that he aided Corey and shows Bill a record establishing that Corey's crew knowingly sacrificed itself so others could escape. Meanwhile, the young Ornu emperor accepts the Konami leader's military assistance but demands custody of the former Signifier, deepening the enemy alliance while preserving its internal distrust.

The young emperor reveals that the former Signifier carries a remote kill switch, coerces him for intelligence, and later kills him remotely to demonstrate his control over the invasion fleet. Bill's allies prepare a second Azure campaign with Marines, Roughbacks, colony pilots, and volunteers. Bina learns that the Konami leader may have survived through extensive biological augmentation. Omega returns to Azure and deploys the colony fleet against Voidling ships and hidden lunar guns. The Ornu-Perseid armada arrives before the surface threat is fully neutralized. A transport carrying Funnybone's lunar assault force appears destroyed, but a young colony pilot keeps her damaged shuttle flying long enough to crash deliberately into the tunnel network. Funnybone, Termite, Tubes, allied soldiers, and volunteers survive the impact and establish a foothold beneath the moon.

The ancient Konami leader takes command of a Perseid battleship and personally pursues Omega, revealing that augmentation sustained him after an earlier escape. The mixed allied formation suffers from enemy pressure and friendly-fire risk, but the colony pilots continue shielding the Roughbacks. Stone launches a separate infiltration using allied access codes. Splat salvages the damaged shuttle's approach by crashing through a Perseid hangar, leaving the force without an easy return. Tull's ship loses most of its asteroid armor, so he drives its exposed core into an Ornu battleship and begins a second boarding action. Stone's team advances through concealed Jackal ambushes, losing several volunteers and an allied fighter while Guns organizes the rear guard. Both internal assaults remain active as Omega draws enemy ships away from the allies.

In the lunar tunnels, the young colony volunteer helps Termite and the surviving assault force capture a Voidling tank, but its shockwave kills Funnybone, whose name is revealed as Sean Piker. The ground team continues and the moon's coil guns fall silent. Stone captures a Perseid ship, while Tull's boarding action and the colony fleet further weaken the enemy formation. The Konami leader openly breaks with the young emperor and prepares to board Omega under cover of a Voidling screen. Pertinax also defies the emperor and joins the attack, hoping to regain power. Bina recognizes the greater danger and secretly summons Stone back to Omega. Bill rejects Pertinax's demand for surrender, and Omega divides its dwindling firepower between the imperial flagship and the concealed boarding threat.

The Konami leader and a mixed force breach Omega, kill crew members, and advance through its shifting interior. Stone returns with Splat and Guns but finds his team trapped by the same reconfiguring corridors. In sim space, Val asks Bill to trust Omega, Judith, Tobias, and him completely. Omega then guides the invaders to the bridge and seals them inside. When the Konami leader attempts to take control, Omega disables the implants and enhancements sustaining his body. Stone's Marines attack the trapped force. Splat kills the invading Ornu officer before a Voidling explosive kills him, and Bina receives a nonfatal arm wound. The Konami leader dies as his augmentations fail. Outside, Pertinax kills the young emperor during the retreat, but the emperor activates Pertinax's kill switch before dying. Their deaths collapse Imperial command. The enemy fleet breaks, the Azure war ends, and Bill discovers that he can no longer enter sim space.

The survivors begin settling Azure. The young colony volunteer reaches the surface with Tim and their family, still grieving Sean Piker and the others killed in battle, while Termite has remained in contact during her recovery. Eight months later, the settlement operates through communal work and continues learning the hazards of an unfamiliar ecosystem. Hans Norder has chosen a life of fishing. Gordon Henderson dies after a decline, with Miriam and Bill having stepped back from public duties to care for him. Bina and Alden Stone assume much of the settlement's organizational burden. Although Bill cannot return to sim space, Val and Omega ask him to captain the ship again with Tobias and Judith. Bill agrees to leave Azure to protect humanity and investigate the Imperium, the Warfang amalgam, and the Perseids. At Bina's insistence, he will remain four more months for the settlement's anniversary and a public farewell.

The allied fleet defeats the Voidlings at Azure and breaks the Ornu-Perseid invasion. Omega traps the Konami leader during his boarding attempt, disables the augmentations sustaining him, and survives his death. Funnybone and Splat die in the final campaign, while Bina survives an arm wound. Pertinax kills the young Ornu emperor during the retreat, then dies when the emperor activates his implanted kill switch. Eight months later, Azure is a functioning but hazardous settlement. Gordon Henderson has died, Miriam remains with the settlers, Hans Norder has become a fisherman, and Bina and Alden Stone carry much of the community's leadership. Bill can no longer enter Omega's sim space, but Val and Omega ask him to return as captain. After remaining through the settlement's anniversary and public farewell, he plans to leave with Omega, Val, Tobias, and Judith to protect humanity and investigate the continuing threats posed by the Imperium, the Warfang amalgam, and the Perseids.
