Tris Prior (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The narrator, a Divergent teenager who left the selfless faction Abnegation to join the fearless Dauntless and took the name Tris. Having just survived the Erudite attack that turned mind-controlled Dauntless soldiers against Abnegation, she is grieving her parents' deaths and haunted by having been forced to shoot her friend Will, which has left her reckless and unable to bring herself to hold a gun.

Four (Supporting)

Also known as Tobias Eaton

Appears from the start

A Dauntless instructor and Tris's love, controlled, capable, and Divergent like her. Known by the nickname Four, his real name is Tobias Eaton, and he is the estranged son of the Abnegation leader Marcus. He helps lead the survivors in the chaos after the assault on the city.

Caleb Prior (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Tris's older brother, who chose the knowledge faction Erudite over their Abnegation upbringing. Clever and studious, he fled the attack alongside Tris and her allies.

Marcus Eaton (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A prominent former leader of Abnegation and Tobias's father, whose private cruelty toward his son was exposed. Secretive and self-justifying, he is determined to recover something he believes the Erudite leader is hiding.

Christina (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A blunt, loyal friend from the honesty faction Candor who transferred to Dauntless alongside Tris. She endured initiation at Tris's side and stands with the survivors.

Peter (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

A cruel, self-serving young man who went through Dauntless initiation as Tris's enemy, willing to hurt anyone to get ahead. He is among the uneasy group of survivors, trusted by no one.

Jeanine Matthews (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The coldly brilliant leader of Erudite, who engineered the simulation attack on Abnegation. Calculating and hungry for control of the city, she now hunts Divergents to use in her experiments.

Tori Wu (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A Dauntless tattoo artist who administered Tris's aptitude test and warned her to hide her Divergence. Loyal and sharp, she carries a grudge against Erudite over her brother's death and allies closely with Tris.

Johanna Reyes (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The scarred, soft-spoken spokeswoman of the peaceful faction Amity. Devoted to harmony and reluctant to take sides, she tries to keep her faction neutral as conflict engulfs the city.

Uriah (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A friendly, easygoing Dauntless-born young man near Tris's age who becomes a trusted friend. Brave and good-humored, he is one of the loyal Dauntless resisting Erudite's takeover.

Evelyn Johnson (Supporting)

Also known as Evelyn Eaton

First appears in chapter 11

The commanding leader of the factionless, the outcasts who belong to no faction. Shrewd and hard, she is revealed to be Tobias's mother, long believed dead, and she gathers the factionless into a rising power as the faction system begins to fracture.

Eric (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 15

A young, ruthless Dauntless leader with a taste for brutality who has thrown in with Erudite. He embodies the faction of Dauntless that betrayed the city alongside Jeanine.
