At the honesty faction Candor, truth serum forces Tris to confess she killed Will, straining her bond with Tobias. Dauntless splits into loyalists and Erudite-allied traitors, and Jeanine begins capturing and killing Divergents in search of one who can withstand a new simulation and unlock a secret she guards. Tris eventually surrenders herself to Jeanine's experiments and barely survives before the factionless, loyal Dauntless, and Candor storm Erudite headquarters. Jeanine is killed and her secret seized: a recorded message revealing that the city is a controlled experiment and that a larger world lies beyond the wall, meant to be entered once enough Divergents emerge. Previously, in Divergent: in a walled city sorted into five virtue-based factions, Beatrice Prior discovered she was Divergent, fitting more than one faction and treated as a danger to a system that depends on people fitting only one. Leaving her Abnegation family, she joined the fearless Dauntless as Tris, endured a brutal initiation, and fell in love with her instructor, Four, whose real name is Tobias Eaton. She uncovered a plot by the Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews to use a mind-control serum to turn the Dauntless into an army against Abnegation. When the attack came, Tris and Tobias resisted because they were Divergent. Tris's parents died saving her, and she was forced to shoot her friend Will while he was under the serum's control. Together she and Tobias shut down the master simulation and halted the slaughter, but Jeanine survived, the faction order was shattered, and the survivors fled the city as open war loomed.
