In short (whole book)
Joe takes responsibility for developing Grandma's Shoe, combining ritual craft, reduction, and settlement building while surviving repeated attacks by Hair Trigger. After defending the new hamlet, he trains under Havoc, builds a guild hall, and supports Stan and Mike's attempt to broker dwarf-elf peace. Hair Trigger sabotages the negotiations, and a world boss pulls the guild hall and delegates beneath the magma just before the Elven Theocracy wins the war. Joe refuses re-education or defection and commits the Shoe to resistance. To stop its residents from leaving, he secures McPoundy's conditional backing and defeats a malfunctioning city guardian in the landfill. The freed guardian, Corey Digger, becomes his and protects the hamlet. Havoc begins fortifying the settlement, but Joe must still recruit another Grandmaster and hide the refuge from the victorious elves.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Joe entered the dwarven side of the conflict on Svartelheim and became Havoc's apprentice. His unusual combination of ritual construction, reduction, and restorative magic made him valuable to the Dwarven Oligarchy, though his methods also caused severe collateral damage. The dwarves captured Grandma's Shoe, a volcanic stronghold centered on a powerful alchemy pyramid. Joe's contributions to the fighting positioned him for military advancement and gave him responsibility for helping turn that dangerous site into something the dwarves could hold. In the prologue, the elven leadership reacts to dwarven gains by changing how humans can obtain protected knowledge: service to the elven people or the destruction of their enemies can now purchase access. The Ecclesiarch is ordered to recruit and bind especially capable humans to the elven cause.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Joe begins planning Grandma's Shoe under Havoc's supervision. He and engineer Bowen prevent the alchemy pyramid from overheating by installing a ritual that drains heat from the cavern, although it will eventually need replacement. A military tribunal confirms Joe as Major General Pyrrhic, and a dwarven princess sponsors him for noble candidacy. His land grant covers the cavern system, while his Peerage quest ties advancement to building and defending a settlement. Hair Trigger, an elf-employed bounty hunter, kills Joe and begins hunting both him and Jaxon. After respawning, Joe constructs a workshop, unlocks his delayed Ritualist path, completes its first assignment, and gains improved ritual analysis and mobile casting. Grandma's Shoe remains a level-zero town with poor utilities, no adequate housing, dangerous heat, and deeply negative morale.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Joe recruits Stan to administer the settlement and Daniela to help with construction. He scans common structures for his Ritual Architect progression, gains an upgraded Ziggurat blueprint, and begins supplying housing and basic services. Hair Trigger attacks again with a gun team, but Joe and Captain Cleavage defeat him after his rapid-fire assault breaks Joe's Exquisite Shell. The encounter exposes Joe's lack of conventional high-impact class abilities. Back at the Shoe, Joe converts fortress rubble into crafting aspects and works through offensive and defensive ritual requirements. He raises a barracks, bathhouse, and apartment building, while Cyril names the settlement Eternal Sunset Acres. Kettlebell, an undisciplined private seeking magical training, is barred from Joe's workshop. Joe's early infrastructure is taking shape, but the settlement still lacks stable staffing, revenue, defenses, and enough reliable residents.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Joe learns that rolled rituals become dangerously unstable and rebuilds his portable defenses on stone. Havoc uses Joe's attack rituals against monsters, completing a class assignment and producing a large supply of valuable cores. Joe converts some into self-replenishing aspect jars and begins planning rechargeable power for his ritual orbs. Stan assumes commercial authority, Daniela oversees fair payment, and Joe establishes that he will retain ownership of the buildings he creates. He raises a warehouse and smithy, improves his practical forging, and adds garbage collection and water supply rituals. Completing ten common buildings starts a week-long defense condition for elevation to a tier-one hamlet.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Joe completes concealed earthquake traps and turns his recalling ritual orbs into remote triggers. Jaxon asks for a combined chiropractic and animal-training facility, with Kettlebell now serving as his student. When hundreds of attackers enter the volcano, Joe rejects evacuation and activates the collapse network. Most approaches cave in and flood with lava. At the remaining front, Joe restores Bowen's severed arm, supports the outnumbered defenders with barriers and healing, and channels the enemy through additional traps until the force retreats. Hair Trigger kills Jaxon, but Joe resurrects him and pursues the assassin alone. The pursuit ends in a prepared ambush. Joe survives by bluffing with an alarm ritual and fighting through serious wounds before Havoc arrives. The hamlet holds, but Joe's low-ranked attacks are inadequate against stronger enemies, and his reckless pursuit shows how vulnerable he remains without support.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Havoc begins direct instruction in mana manipulation, then throws Joe into the capital landfill to gather resources and improve his efficiency. Working alone among high-level dwarven zombies, Joe establishes concealed defenses and develops a stronger theory of ritual structure. He constructs a permanent reduction tower and nearly destroys himself when an aspect-array line ruptures. A safer method using mana control lets him complete progressively stronger layers until the tower can automatically process material through rare rank. The refinery also repairs itself from spare aspects. After using the undead against one another, Joe leaves the special layer unfinished and follows his magical senses toward an exit.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
At Grandma's Shoe, Havoc has strengthened the structure and ventilation. Lord Chekhov arrives to assess Joe's city readiness and requires a town hall before further advancement. He also confirms that the Society of Scholars has an edict against Joe, though other priorities delay action. Joe and volunteers raise a Wanderers guild hall, designate it as a spawn and teleport point, and use it to promote cross-faction commerce and a bloodless resolution to the war. Havoc formally accepts Joe as his apprentice and names him the prospective inheritor of his craft holdings. Another elven assault is repelled by the settlement's powerful residents. After intensive training with Havoc, Joe is approached by his cat queen ally. Stan and Mike then reveal their cross-faction human initiative and ask Joe to create a magical means for hostile dwarves and elves to conduct peace talks.
Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)
Joe develops larger power reserves for his ritual orbs, trains their combat control, and joins Jaxon and Kettlebell in capturing regenerative pointed turkeys for a food and beast-taming project. Smoke from the Legion's main training facility suggests a wider elven operation. Under Havoc's guidance, Joe converts the proposed peace enchantment into a battery-powered ritual and runs it across a table in the guild hall. The Oligarchy and Theocracy accept preliminary talks at Grandma's Shoe. Joe surrounds the hall with safeguards, including stasis, while elite units arrive with the delegations. The finished table changes hostile speech into polite or candid expression rather than forcing truth. Joe also completes another Ritual Architect stage. With formal negotiations about to begin, the settlement is guarded against the obvious risk of sabotage, and Hair Trigger remains a threat.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Joe forges a rare mug for his coffee elemental, which evolves into Automate and gains daily enhancement and emergency protective abilities. Hair Trigger enters with the elven delegation, and Joe secretly obtains his blood for remote ritual targeting. The Council of Five meets the elven royal family under an armistice that threatens permanent death for approved or known attacks. Talks stall over the settlement's status. Daniela notices suspicious arrivals through the guild teleporter, leading her and Joe to Hair Trigger's concealed sabotage team. Hair Trigger shoots Daniela and reveals that meat bait has been planted throughout the hall to attract a powerful creature. He also states that the royal family does not truly rule the Theocracy. Joe raises the alarm and escapes with the healed Daniela, but the negotiations and assembled leaders remain in immediate danger.
Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)
A silencing effect prevents Joe's alarm from warning the guild hall. Jaxon consumes one bait pack with his transformed hands, but twelve remain. Joe creates a blood-linked insanity ritual for Hair Trigger, prompting Daniela to object to his use of mind-altering magic. The sabotage team attacks again and shoots her a second time. A world boss then rises through Grandma's Shoe, seizes the guild hall, and drags the building and its negotiators beneath the magma. Joe activates the hall's stasis protection, but the boss greatly shortens its duration. Captain Cleavage defeats Hair Trigger, sending him to respawn. Before Joe can attempt a rescue, the Elven Theocracy wins the wider war. The mandatory Excommunicated title is imposed on holders of Dwarven Superiority, increasing instability in their mana abilities by 20 percent, along with orders encouraging them to kill dwarves for re-education. Joe refuses to defect and commits himself to preserving the Shoe as the center of a long resistance.
Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)
The residents plan to abandon Grandma's Shoe unless Joe obtains another Grandmaster's commitment. Joe travels with Captain Cleavage, Jaxon, Daniela, and Kettlebell to McPoundy, Havoc's brother. McPoundy will consider supporting the hamlet only after Joe secures a guardian and builds linked portals. With a token and supplies as proof of his interest, the group enters the zombie-filled landfill to claim a malfunctioning city guardian. Joe improves his reduction array, uses moving debris to cross the landfill, and turns a zombie swarm against the guardian's five forms. The party defeats its elemental body, phoenix, shielded golems, and hammer beast. Jaxon dies destroying a control crystal but is resurrected. The final form identifies itself as Corey Digger and explains that Joe's altered ritual freed it from control. Joe survives its challenge with Exquisite Shell, Neutrality Aura, and Automate's protection. Corey Digger then becomes Joe's owned city guardian, giving him the foundation needed to defend the Shoe.
How does it end? (ending)
The Elven Theocracy wins the war before Joe can rescue the negotiators dragged beneath the magma. Joe refuses to defect and turns Grandma's Shoe toward organized resistance. He gains McPoundy's conditional support, then leads Captain Cleavage, Jaxon, Daniela, and Kettlebell into the landfill to claim a city guardian. Corey Digger is freed from its controlling enchantments and becomes Joe's guardian. Back at the hamlet, it exposes disguised elven elites, while the commitments from Havoc and McPoundy persuade the residents to remain. Havoc begins installing active defenses. Hair Trigger survives through respawn, the Society of Scholars' edict against Joe remains unresolved, and Automate's lethal-hit protection is unavailable for a month. Joe still needs another Grandmaster, linked support, a safe policy for new arrivals, and a way to conceal the Shoe from the victorious elves and their allies.
