In short (whole book)
Rei, a scarred student with a disabling bone disease, receives Shido, an initially weak A-type CAD with unprecedented S-ranked Growth. Valera Dent secures his admission to Galen's Institute, where Shido repairs his health and advances rapidly through every hard fight. Rei builds a trusted training circle with Viviana Arada, Catcher, and Aria Laurent while enduring hostility from Logan Grant, Mateus Selick, and Dyrk Reese. An ambush and a manipulated tournament bracket intensify the conflict, but Rei continues climbing through the intraschool competition. Central Command forces him to eliminate Catcher as a test, then pairs him with Logan. Intensive training brings Shido to C4 and unlocks Type Shift, a user-unique ability that changes it into Saber mode. Rei defeats Logan and qualifies for Sectionals. Aria forms a squad around their group, accepts a date with Rei, and considers Logan for its last position. Public footage earns Rei the name Iron Prince and alerts a powerful corporate family to his existence.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Rei is a talented but physically disadvantaged student whose chronic condition has required repeated surgery. He and his closest friend, Viviana Arada, hope to receive CADs and attend Galen's Institute. Rei excels in the written assignment exam but fails the physical assessment. An unexplained system order overrides that rejection and sends him to a private final interview with the Mind, the artificial intelligence governing the Inter-System Collective. The Mind explains that Rei's unusual body makes him valuable as an experimental candidate, and Rei accepts the risk. Viviana receives a strong Duelist CAD. Rei is selected last and receives Shido, an A-type CAD ranked only F8. Its first manifestation is a single gauntlet, and almost every specification begins near the bottom. One feature changes the meaning of that poor start: Shido has S-ranked Growth, an unprecedented rating. Viviana persuades Rei that this potential is worth pursuing. Despite the long odds of admission, they decide to apply to Galen's and spend the remaining months training.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Valera Dent brings Rei's application before the Galen's admissions board. She shows that he has already raised every ordinary specification and argues that his rapid development matters more than his starting rank. The board accepts him over Dyrk Reese's objections, while Willem Mayd predicts that Shido's genetic correction may end the illness behind Rei's surgeries. Dent later tests Rei's restraint during a confrontation at his old school before delivering his acceptance. At Galen's, Rei and Viviana move into Canes 304 with Catcher, Chancery Cash, and Jack Benally. Rei also identifies Logan Grant, a highly ranked Mauler who immediately treats him with contempt. During commencement, Dent is revealed as Galen's chief combat instructor and former SCT star. Rei volunteers for a demonstration duel against Aria Laurent, the incoming class's only C-ranked cadet. He loses when Aria's Third Eye blocks his improvised blind-side attack, but he forces her to use the ability. The difficult fight raises Shido to E4 and produces its first physical evolution. Dent confirms that Shido's S-ranked Growth is driving the extraordinary response.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Rei's unusual admission and evolving CAD attract suspicion from other cadets. Aria investigates his public record and discovers that he rose from F8 at assignment to E4 within weeks. During parameter testing, Rei performs poorly in conventional agility and offense measures but shows rapid adaptation. In the fortitude assessment, his lifetime of extreme pain lets him endure to C2, far beyond his classmates, and earns new respect from Bandt Senson and the other Brawlers. Live combat confirms that Rei remains badly outmatched in raw power. Viviana defeats him, and Logan then uses superior strength and a feint to win their bout. After the result is declared, Logan keeps attacking and tries to strike again. Dent intervenes, sends Logan to the brig, and warns Rei that cleverness alone will not always protect him. Shido converts the dangerous match into a major set of specification gains, reaches E7, and evolves again with greater speed and defense. Aria witnesses the immediate change and checks Rei's new rank, deepening her interest in the cause of his growth.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Rei begins extra evening training with Viviana and Catcher. Aria confronts him about his impossible rate of advancement, but instead of exposing him she asks for another fight and joins the group. Training against her helps Rei reach D0, while Aria gains the genuine friendships she has lacked under her family's control. The four become a close training circle, even as Aria's mother objects to Rei because of his background and rank. Rei's visible improvement provokes greater hostility. Mateus Selick and five other first years lure him into a secluded sub-basement and attack him together. Rei manages to contact Aria before losing consciousness, and she carries him to the hospital. Catcher is allowed to inspect Shido and learns its S-ranked Growth. Rei refuses to name the attackers because there is no corroborating evidence and decides to answer them in sanctioned combat instead. Aria commits to preparing him for the coming intraschool SCT. Meanwhile, Viviana heads off to confront Logan, believing he arranged the ambush, while Catcher follows to stop the situation from worsening.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
Viviana's confrontation reveals that Logan did not order the ambush. He gathers Selick and the other attackers, defeats them himself, and promises that they will not threaten Rei again, though his own hostility toward Rei continues. In class, Rei tells Logan that his conduct helped create the conditions for the attack. Aria publicly defends Rei, while Viviana remains unsettled by her private dealings with Logan. Dyrk Reese openly calls Rei a burden during squad training. Rei answers defiantly and receives two days in the brig, leaving little preparation time before the intraschool tournament. Aria uses her family connection to Galen's commanding officer to train with him during confinement. Rei repays that trust by showing her Shido's S-ranked Growth. Back in parameter testing, Rei demonstrates major improvement, reaching C5 in offense and endurance and B0 in fortitude. Dent warns that his first tournament match may be difficult and observes that Shido has not yet developed a branch. The opening bracket confirms the danger: Aria must face Logan, while Rei expects an opponent considerably stronger than himself.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
Aria defeats Logan after surviving his Overclock ability and advances in the winner's bracket. Rei loses his opening match to the strongest Saber in his class, despite injuring her and exposing her repeated patterns. The loss sends him into a demanding losers-bracket path, but Shido reaches D9 and evolves into a balanced two-armed configuration. Dent also arranges advanced instruction for Rei, Viviana, Catcher, and Aria with an elite A-type upper-year. Rei's next pairing is Camilla Warren, one of the cadets involved in his ambush. By studying her habits, he defeats her with the tournament's fastest opening attack to that point. The lack of a Shido upgrade shows that preparation and skill, rather than superior specifications, decided the match. Galen's commanding officer then confronts Reese over a wider pattern of hostility toward Rei. Tournament records indicate manual interference from Reese's node, though the evidence is insufficient for formal punishment. Reese is ordered to restore automated randomization. School leadership also reveals that Central Command projects Rei may reach B or even A rank within his first year, while remaining concerned about the unknown risks of his growth.
Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)
Over the following tournament weeks, Rei wins three more matches while Aria, Viviana, and Chancery Cash qualify individually for Sectionals. Catcher remains in contention through the losers bracket. Christopher Lennon, the advanced A-type mentor known as the Lasher, pushes the group through punishing training and warns Rei that Shido may be approaching a major arsenal change. An external order then overrides the expected bracket. Rei and Catcher are forced to face each other, and Catcher insists that they fight honestly. Rei wins, eliminating his friend and raising Shido to C3. Aria reveals that the order came from Central Command and that her uncle, Galen's commanding officer, opposed it. The group concludes that Central wanted to test whether Rei could defeat someone close to him. Rather than withdraw, Catcher immediately helps Rei prepare for the next match. With six days remaining, Rei commits to reaching C4, while Viviana supports the training and Aria secures a private field. Their trust survives the imposed contest, but Central's direct interest in Rei is now unmistakable.
Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)
Rei's next opponent is Logan. His attempt to force rapid advancement leaves him exhausted and predictable, so Christopher Lennon orders rest before taking control of the final preparation. Across a long Sunday session, Lennon targets Rei's balance, defense, endurance, cognition, speed, and ability to survive against a much stronger fighter. After repeated simulated defeats, Shido reaches C4 and evolves with an unknown, user-unique ability. Central Command receives an immediate alert, and Rei is placed under secrecy while Dent and Galen's medical staff evaluate the change. In the final individual qualifier, Rei and Logan fight nearly evenly. Logan has greater mass and endurance, while Rei holds a slight speed advantage. After suffering severe wounds, Rei traps Logan's axe and activates Type Shift. Shido changes from its Brawler form into Saber mode, producing a sword and altered specifications. Logan activates Overclock, but Rei disables his arms and legs before the boost can turn the match. Rei wins by simulated fatal damage, qualifies for Sectionals, and establishes a limited new respect with Logan despite their continuing hostility.
Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)
Footage of Rei's victory reaches the head of Kamiya Corporation, who recognizes Rei rather than focusing on the match and urgently summons several family members. The reason for the corporation's interest is not disclosed. At Galen's, Aria is selected to lead a Sectionals squad. She recruits Chancery Cash as the Lancer, adding her to a group that already includes Rei, Viviana Arada, and Catcher. Cash explains that she entered Galen's after failing her first CAD assignment examination, training for another year, and succeeding on a second attempt. The squad still lacks an aggressive Mauler. Rei proposes Logan Grant, judging him the strongest available choice despite their rivalry and Logan's failure to qualify individually. The invitation has not yet been made. Rei also asks Aria to spend a day alone with him during leave, and she accepts their first date. As public recordings circulate, viewers begin calling Rei the Iron Prince. He closes the term as a Sectionals qualifier with a user-unique CAD ability, a growing public identity, Central Command's attention, and an unexplained corporate family newly searching for him.
How does it end? (ending)
Rei defeats Logan Grant in the final individual qualifier by unveiling Shido's user-unique Type Shift. The ability converts Shido from its Brawler configuration into Saber mode, and the victory sends Rei to Sectionals. Aria Laurent becomes a squad leader and recruits Rei, Viviana Arada, Catcher, and Chancery Cash. The group still needs a Mauler, and Rei urges Aria to choose Logan despite their rivalry. Rei and Aria also agree to their first date. Released match footage gives Rei the public nickname Iron Prince and draws the unexplained attention of the head of Kamiya Corporation. Central Command is already monitoring and testing Rei, while Shido's future forms and limits remain unknown. Logan's family connection to Rei, Aria's conflict with her controlling family, Dyrk Reese's continued position at Galen's Institute, and the corporation's intentions all remain open.
