In short (whole book)

Erin Solstice strengthens the Wandering Inn through new construction, Garden crops, memory-fire, and a wider network of allies, while Bird's rejection of Hive authority leads Klbkch to attack the individual Antinium. Pawn's miracle and the arrival of other Hives end that crisis, though Klbkch withdraws on indefinite leave. Goblin Home defeats frost wyverns and learns that Garen Redfang's key is half of a route to a former goblin king's legacy. In Chandrar, Raelt duels Flos and forces his army away from Belchan's capital. Az'kerash discovers why Toren has a soul and begins remaking undead so they can level. Griffin Hunt reunites, survives the returned Stitch Witch, and witnesses the Assassin's Guild openly challenge Magnolia Reinhart. Couriers complete the delivery that the Guild tried to stop, while Magnolia unites northern ladies to banish the Stitch Witch without destroying her. The book closes with Erin awaiting the Small Queen, Toren still captive, and several wars and threats unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Erin Solstice built the Wandering Inn outside Liscor into a refuge linked to distant cities by a magical door. Her household includes Mrsha, the young Gnoll entrusted to her care, Bird and other individual Antinium, Lyonette, and Numbtongue, a Redfang Hobgoblin bard. The Garden of Sanctuary protects the inn and holds memorials to people Erin has lost. Her choices have connected her to Liscor's Watch, Pallas, Wistram, adventurers, goblins, and Antinium leaders. Ryoka remains away from the inn by choice. Toren, Erin's former undead worker, is also absent, leaving Erin uncertain about his fate and troubled by her treatment of him. Beyond Liscor, Flos has returned to conquest, Magnolia Reinhart remains a major northern power, and the aftermath of goblin wars continues to shape survivors throughout Izril.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

The broadcast of the Saltstone tribe's massacre causes international outrage and shifts some opinion toward Flos as he invades Belchan. Nearer the inn, Numbtongue finds unexpected safety with a farming family after the Selim Watch pursues him. The farmers propose using Erin's magical door for trade and planting mana-rich sage grass in the Garden of Sanctuary to help recharge it. Erin accepts the practical value of the plan but insists on limits after the former pirate in the family abuses her intervention in a fight. Inside the Garden, Numbtongue discovers the memorial hill. Garen Redfang and other dead goblins have statues there, while absent statues give him reason to hope that several Redfang survivors still live. Erin tells him that the inn is his home and offers help if he chooses to seek them. The Garden is therefore becoming both a foundation for the door network and a place where the inn's household can face its losses.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Erin's allies pursue several forms of practical knowledge. Her cacao harvest becomes a small first batch of chocolate with help from Lyonette and Palt, and she trades some of it to an elite Pallas alchemist for defensive potions. Octavia receives recognition and a chance to study her irreplaceable haste-potion sample, which may be far more powerful than expected. Erin also continues anonymous games of chess and Go with Niers Astoragon through magical boards, neither correspondent knowing the other's identity. Elsewhere, Will's student expedition sails toward shipwreck sites supplied by Niers in search of treasure and artifacts. A drowned vessel secretly follows after the objective leaks, leaving the expedition endangered as it approaches its first wreck. Grimalkin demonstrates weight training to military and civic observers, turning Erin's ordinary knowledge into a system with broad institutional interest. Meanwhile, Bird presses ordinary Antinium workers to make personal choices. When Mrsha enters a hidden passage to the Free Hive and soldiers nearly kill her, Bird attacks to protect her. He then leads Anand, Yellow Splatters, and other Antinium to the Garden's memorials. Before them, Bird renounces the Free Hive and declares that the inn is his home. His open rejection of Klbkch's authority turns the individuals' growing selfhood into a direct conflict with established Hive command.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Erin settles the inn's construction debt and creates an emergency cache for Mrsha inside the Garden. Ralk reports that two senior guards have disappeared while investigating Bearclaw, leaving an unresolved threat in Liscor. Erin also learns more about her magical fire. Sorrow becomes a cold flame that can make ice and preserve painful feeling. When she meets the remorseful one-armed Minotaur awaiting judgment for murder, she manifests a fire of glory that holds courage, guilt, and communal remembrance together. She uses it at the inn for memorial drinks and reaches level 41. In the High Passes, Goblin Home repels a frost-wyvern assault through traps, disciplined defenses, and heavy weapons. The refuge suffers damage but survives and captures several wyverns. Teriarch reveals himself to its chieftain because she carries Garen Redfang's key. He explains that a second key is needed to reach a former goblin king's hidden legacy. The chieftain resolves to rebuild, seek allies, and pursue that inheritance.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Flos routs Belchan's main field army and advances toward its capital. Raelt occupies the city first, agreeing to surrender the prime minister responsible for the massacre but refusing Flos's demand for a wider execution of the leadership. The kings invoke an ancient duel to decide the confrontation. Raelt's skill wounds Flos, but Flos eventually overwhelms him. When an ally interrupts to save Raelt, the duel becomes a battle. Raelt reaches level 30, becomes the King of Challenges, and rallies his inferior force until reinforcements and artillery arrive. Flos retreats instead of sacrificing more elite troops, leaving Raelt alive and celebrated as the King of Duels, though both armies take severe losses and the war remains open. Back around Liscor, individual Antinium begin seeking information about gender, intimacy, and relationships outside Hive experience. Erin promises Belgrade a future longer than the brief life he expects, while Lyonette and Pawn quietly become partners.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Toren, reduced to a skull, is delivered to Az'kerash's hidden castle. The necromancer confirms that Toren can think independently, resist commands written into his bones, hold several classes, and level. He finds extraordinary spellwork and an archmage's bones in Toren's construction, then identifies the decisive principle: a complete sentience-working was left blank at its center, allowing magic to provide the missing element and produce a soul. Az'kerash gives Toren a new body but keeps him captive. He begins remaking his chosen undead so they can develop independently and sends messages about the discovery to other powerful beings. Elsewhere, Griffin Hunt reaches Inversil as a reduced three-person team and reunites with its former shield fighter after paying restitution for the team's collapse. Her return restores the group to four members, though her young son's safety limits their future work. The team considers Teriarch's suspiciously rich wyvern bounty while trying to settle old debts and relationships.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

The Assassin's Guild maims a courier while deliberately leaving his entrusted pendant untouched, announcing that it no longer follows restrictions associated with Magnolia Reinhart. Soon afterward, the Stitch Witch sends a giant flesh construct against Inversil. Griffin Hunt helps destroy it, then follows other adventurers to the Witch herself. Her control over cloth, thread, and magic disables the attackers with ease, although Griffin Hunt's scout leader wounds her using arrows without fletching. She withdraws after ensuring that witnesses understand her return. In Liscor, Klbkch's contempt for the individual Antinium becomes violent. He attacks them at the inn, expels them from the Free Hive, defeats Ralk and Watch soldiers, and pursues Pawn underground. Pawn's Holy Barrier delays him, and a returning female Centenium arrives with several Hives in time to end the attack. She views the individuals as valuable rather than defective. Klbkch steps away from Watch duty, while the individuals survive within a newly reunited Antinium community.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Erin's household plants fruit, cacao, and vegetables throughout the Garden, with Mrsha intending to accelerate their growth through druid magic. Construction gives the inn a completed second floor and a developing third. Ralk returns to duty, but Klbkch remains on indefinite leave. In Pallas, the Grand Strategist is injured and temporarily rejuvenated by the city's elite alchemist. Their dispute exposes the strategist's desire for a conventional public hero against the Antinium and the alchemist's refusal to deny a turnscale identity for that role. Selys enters Pallas society through her family connection and wealth, only to be warned that elite attention is transactional. A concealed turnscale gathering is exposed and evacuated before a Watch raid, confirming worsening danger. At the inn, the Grand Hive's Small Queen arrives to speak with Erin. She frames Antinium existence as part of a war that never ended, but her allegiance and purpose remain unknown even to the Grand Strategist.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

The Stitch Witch massacres another village to provoke attention and moves farther into the north. At the same time, three couriers undertake the public delivery of an amulet despite a noble bounty and repeated Assassin's Guild attacks. They evade roadblocks, traps, carriages, and specialized attackers, then place the amulet in the intended recipient's hands. It proves her fiancé's infidelity, ends the engagement, and creates a blood debt between noble houses. The successful delivery becomes a public victory for the Runners' Guild over the assassins. Seeking greater consequences, the Stitch Witch turns toward prominent targets. Magnolia Reinhart responds by assembling northern ladies across political divisions. More than two hundred join their authority in a collective banishment that forces the Witch out of the region for months or longer. They cannot kill her, and she remains hostile. The elderly matriarch in the coalition refuses the prospect of immortality and accepts her approaching death. The book ends with the Witch displaced but alive, the Assassin's Guild defiant, and the northern political conflict newly sharpened.

How does it end? (ending)

The Wandering Inn is larger and better supplied, with new Garden crops, expanded rooms, stronger magic, and several Antinium Hives newly connected through the completed tunnel. Erin is level 41 and awaits an unresolved audience with the Grand Hive's Small Queen. Bearclaw and the missing Watch guards remain an open danger, while Klbkch has taken indefinite leave after his failed attack on the individual Antinium. Goblin Home survives the frost wyverns and begins rebuilding, but its chieftain still needs a second key to pursue the former goblin king's legacy. Raelt survives his duel with Flos and saves Belchan's capital for the moment, leaving their kingdoms at war. Toren remains Az'kerash's prisoner as the necromancer begins creating undead capable of independent growth. Griffin Hunt is restored to four members and survives the Stitch Witch's return. The couriers complete their contested delivery, defeating the Assassin's Guild's public challenge, and Magnolia Reinhart's coalition forces the Stitch Witch out of the north without killing her. Pallas's persecution of turnscales is poised to intensify.
