In short (whole book)
Home at his family's auction house for the break, Sal Argento means to win his parents' backing for a crafting guild, but the visit upends everything he thought he knew about them. He stages a record-breaking auction, buys into a Silver Sanctuary property, and secretly builds an automated fabrication machine, the Arkwright. At a Hunter Bureau gala he meets Fabi, a top crafter and his prophesied match, and a forced live skill-implant demonstration nearly kills her, exposing that his mother is a hidden body-manipulation hero and multiplying Sal's own essence capacity. His parents finally confess they were once frontline heroes of the Silverson Group, cast out decades ago, who raised Sal in secrecy to keep him off the Hunter Bureau's radar. Reconciled, Sal trains in the family's martial arts, learns pure silver harms demons, and hand-crafts the story's first Mythic-grade item, a bonded gauntlet with a lethal drone. Rather than hide, the family chooses to build his power and forge outside alliances. Sal returns to Quest Academy far stronger, with a Mythic weapon, a militia ally, and Fabi as a training partner against a looming portal expedition.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously, in the Quest Academy series: Sal Argento, a guarded young man whose silver eyes appraise any object and who can copy other people's abilities, enrolled at Quest Academy, where heroes train to reclaim demon-held land. During skill registration he accidentally fused several powers into a unique top-tier crafting ability the Academy calls Mythcrafter, and became the protege of the crafting lecturer Upgrade. Befriending the foresight-gifted Divinity Khan, he helped expose Bastion, a wealthy faction seeding loyal students through the Academy, and led a squad of underdogs to third place in the first-year tournament. A harsh new curriculum then placed him on a fractious excursion team led by the manipulative mind-controller Erika Clifton and guarded by the top hero Prestige, mother of a hidden former child hero, Gallant, whose volatile ability a locket suppresses. Sal accepted that he had been avoiding real growth and resolved to found a crafting guild rather than fight. In his second semester he accidentally created Perfect, a flawless self-improving ability suited to himself, cleared a Tower trial that escalated into a genuine demon incursion, and killed his first hulker in melee. A rescued hunter was revealed as the Hunter Bureau's president, who had been watching Sal for months. The Academy named its first Saviors, with Sal ranked the single best in the whole school. He also glimpsed a possible sixty-years future in which humanity is winning the war but his mentor Upgrade has died. He headed home to win his parents' backing for the guild he still means to found.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
So far this book: Sal returns to his family's Silver Sanctuary auction house for the between-semester break, meaning to persuade his parents to back the crafting guild he wants to found. Set to light restoration work, he instead reworks the abandoned gear of Shade, a rival appraiser who has defaulted on his bills, transforming the pieces into evolutionary-grade showpieces for that night's auction. The sale becomes a spectacle: a restored breastplate, a run of daggers, and a combined armor set draw furious bidding wars, publicly humiliate Shade over his history of nonpayment, and end with the family's largest single-night takings ever. Shade, exposed as unable to cover his own bid and forcibly ejected, becomes a declared enemy. Sal also secretly uses his copying ability to expand his father Petro's appraisal power into its fuller form, permanently changing his eyes, which alarms his mother Sophia. The huge windfall sharpens Sal's plan to buy property in Silver Sanctuary for a guild base, but it exposes a rift between his parents over how far to reshape the business around his talents. The auction closes triumphant but tense.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
With the auction behind them, Sal's parents reconcile, and Sophia throws herself into finding a Silver Sanctuary property for the future guild. A stray prophecy from Divinity, that Sal is fated to marry a crafter he cannot place, is decoded by Sophia: the girl is Fabi, daughter of the family's materials supplier Maurice, a childhood acquaintance Sal does not remember, born without an ability and much of whose old crafting equipment now furnishes his workshop. Touring properties, the family is courted by an ambitious restaurateur, Michel, but Sal is captivated instead by a rundown, Hunter-Bureau-owned warehouse-and-storefronts site that connects underground to his workshop and matches a vision Divinity once showed him, though it carries an enormous price. Sal crafts lavish evolutionary-grade gifts for his parents and, prompted by Petro, begins a secret, hugely ambitious project: an automated machine that manufactures custom weapons and armor from raw materials. He can fund such ideas with a commission of nearly fourteen million from the auction. The build, hidden from Sophia, consumes the rest of his break.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Sal pours himself into the secret fabrication machine, teaching himself essence programming with online tutorials from a crafter he realizes is Fabi, and driving the work with a volatile inspiration elixir. Over roughly two weeks he hand-builds every component, upgrades his tools, writes a full operating system from scratch, and assembles them into a single glass-fronted enclosure his father jokingly calls a factory. The finished machine, which he names MythOS, proves able to identify and sort fed materials, upgrade its own production grade by consuming cores and stock, and craft customized gear by letting the user pick a target grade and specific attributes rather than copying a fixed blueprint. To his own disappointment it starts slow, then unexpectedly leaps ahead, unlocking rare-grade output and turning a handful of scraps into a custom dagger of the kind that sold for a fortune at the auction. His parents shift from confusion to real enthusiasm for the machine as a business asset. With it working and a Hunter Bureau gala approaching, Sal turns to the evening he has been dreading, which will bring him face to face with Fabi and a reclusive crafting authority he has long admired.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
At the Hunter Bureau gala, held in a lavishly reclaimed lost city, Sal finally meets Fabi in person and finds an easy, teasing rapport rather than the awkwardness he feared; the two quickly bond over crafting, and she is delighted to learn he designed the evolving ability weave she is about to receive. When Sal brings his malfunctioning machine's error report as an icebreaker, a crowd of crafters gathers, and a famously eccentric, reclusive automation authority, whose work inspired the machine, publicly outs Sal as the Academy's secret master crafter to the entire hall, framing the exposure as protection. Sal's furious parents confront the crafter, but Sal accepts the reveal and even forms a tense alliance with him. Over an extravagant dinner, Sal introduces Fabi to his friends Barry and Blathnaid, and the Hunter Bureau's president, Robert, opens the program, announcing the reclamation of the fallen city and a long memorial for the year's dead heroes, among them the father of one of Sal's struggling classmates. Beneath the ceremony runs a growing unease about the Bureau's ambitions and its interest in Sal.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
The gala's Academy segment turns into a crisis. Sal's ability is publicly credited under the name Perfect, and Fabi is named the first student to receive a skill implant, but Robert forces the delicate procedure to be performed live and unrehearsed. Discovering the Bureau loaded a deliberately weaker weave, Sal secretly rebuilds Fabi's full ability at the machine moments before she is sealed inside. The implant then demands far more essence than the machine holds and begins pulling it from Fabi's body. As it fails, heroes pour in volunteered essence, Prestige condenses raw essence to sustain it, and Sal rushes into the barrier to stabilize the machine with his mother's borrowed ability, badly burning his face and losing sight in one eye. The person who arrives to heal him and finish the repair is Sophia herself, revealing to Sal that her true power is body manipulation, not simple restoration, and that she and Prestige share a hidden past. Prestige also violently ruptures and regrows Sal's essence gates, multiplying his capacity through his active Perfect ability. Fabi emerges unharmed, her new ability already manifesting as she instinctively reshapes stone. The public account carefully hides Sophia's secret.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
In a private debrief, Robert and the family agree a cover story: the machine failed because it was under-built, the incident was an unrepeatable fluke, and the implant program will pause until the reclusive crafter builds a better machine, with Sal and Fabi placed under his oversight and the Bureau's researcher moving to Quest Academy. As compensation for the risk, Robert grants Sal the Silver Sanctuary depot property he wanted; Fabi proposes they split it to house both families' operations, and it is awarded to them jointly. Sal's damaged visor, evolved in the crisis into a powerful legendary-grade device, lets him formally scan Fabi's new ability: named Figment, it proves extraordinary, rivaling a top Hunter Bureau hero in raw capacity. Back at their table, Fabi downplays any guild commitment as a business partnership, and the two strike a bargain to build a drone dock for Sal's machine and run dungeons together. The gala's closing ceremony delivers the public cover story, names Sal the top first-year Savior, and confirms the joint depot award, before the group slips away early to the Argento family's own after-party.
Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)
At the family after-party, the reclusive crafter diagnoses the true flaw in Sal's fabrication machine, that automated crafting cannot replicate a crafter's guiding will, and installs a dungeon-heart fragment Sal owns to solve it, substantially upgrading the machine, now nicknamed Arkwright. Sal and Fabi grow closer, dancing and speaking openly about Divinity's marriage prophecy, and Upgrade's brother Raven brings news of an alarming Hunter Bureau policy: Savior students may soon be forced onto a dangerous portal expedition, which collides with Divinity's earlier private prophecy that Sal will one day enter a portal and never return. After the last guests leave, Sal finally presses his exhausted parents for the whole truth. They reveal that Sophia's real ability is Shaper, a body-manipulation power, that Petro's appraisal lets him map other heroes' weaves for her to imitate, and that both were once frontline heroes in the Silverson Group, a large hero organization practicing arranged marriages. They fell in love, defied that custom, and were cast out roughly two decades ago, taking the name Argento and hiding their past to give Sal a peaceful life. Overwhelmed but not truly angry, Sal reconciles with them and asks only how he can ease their burdens.
Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)
In the days after the revelation, Sal explores the upgraded Arkwright, which now proposes its own research, material synthesis, and redesigns; with Fabi's help he finds it can reverse-engineer functional essence-programming techniques, producing a new creation line the pair name Mythmark and a single unassuming jumpsuit hiding one powerful ability. Fabi becomes his primary confidante, reassuring him that his achievements are his own and reframing his parents' choices as having shaped his values rather than merely protecting him. Petro explains the full reasoning behind the secrecy: a body-manipulation classification like Sophia's would have put Sal on a secret Hunter Bureau watch list and a military track, so they raised him to appear a harmless support. He reveals that at age seven Sal unknowingly altered his father's weave, the incident that cemented their silence, and that Quest arranged Hunter Bureau backing partly to hide Sal from the Silverson Group entirely. To help Sal close the gap between his top rank and his real combat inexperience, Petro offers to teach him the family's anti-demon martial style, the Silverson Arts, and the two begin training.
Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)
Petro, and later Sophia, drill Sal in the Silverson Arts, and Petro shares long-hidden history: the Hunter Bureau and its president rose barely two decades ago from a covert cross-guild coup that toppled the old order. Meanwhile the Arkwright, left to run semi-autonomously, escalates a project into a wearable set Sal and Fabi call Dominion, which can summon registered gear and triggers powerful automated attacks. Field-testing it, Sal wipes out an entire dungeon of leechers with a single misfiring defensive activation that nearly drains him, exposing the set's crippling essence cost and its poorly emulated programming; he and Fabi decide to rebuild around its stronger components. Determined to raise his essence capacity, Sal recklessly drinks a full bottle of a potent elixir, badly injuring himself, then commits to a days-long, agonizing essence-remapping process that reorganizes his gates. He survives it, emerging with markedly improved crafting grades, more open gates, and a new fortification stat. Sophia joins his training, teaching an offense-first philosophy and demonstrating, despite his Perfect ability, that her body-manipulation speed still outmatches him entirely.
Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)
Needing demon cores to fund the Arkwright's newest research, toward a rare, historically lethal material called a Blight Core, Sal asks his father to take him hunting. Petro brings him off the books to an independent militia compound run by his old comrade Luke, who sells cheap cores and pitches recruiting Sal. There Petro reveals another family secret: pure silver is a genuine weakness of low-tier demons, the true origin of the Argento name, and dresses Sal in heirloom silver combat gear. Fighting without his Perfect ability, Sal kills leechers and then prowlers by hand, discovering a real, exhilarating competence in combat for the first time. When a dangerous boss prowler appears, Petro breaks a promise to wait and kills it alone, and back home Sal breaks down, airing months of accumulated hurt and fear, over the parental secrecy, his sudden elevation, and his dread of being targeted for his abilities, to both parents in turn. Both recommit fully to his wellbeing and trust, substantially healing the rift the reveal had opened, and Sal resolves to keep training while turning back to crafting.
Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)
Sal blueprints the family's silver gear into the Arkwright, funds and confirms the Blight Core research, and begins designing an ambitious new personal gauntlet built around a shoulder-mounted drone dock. When the newly synthesized Blight Core registers to his visor, the design balloons, and the machine reports it cannot even simulate the blueprint: Sal has apparently designed a genuine Mythic-grade item, a tier above anything seen. Driving to collect Divinity for a visit, Petro reacts with alarm to hearing Sal made a real Blight Core, recounting how people once died over one, and both quietly wonder whether Robert's demon-annihilating power might derive from a similar source. Divinity's visit deepens their friendship: Petro spars with her and begins teaching her a mobility-based fighting style, and she and Sal clear the air, with Divinity admitting the marriage prophecy about Sal and Fabi was fabricated teasing rather than a true vision. Awed by the Arkwright, she helps Sal plan hand-made, personalized gifts for their Quest Academy friends before the new semester, as he turns to breaking his Mythic gauntlet blueprint into parts the machine can build.
Story so far - through chapter 96 (this book)
Over an exhausting multi-day effort, Sal breaks the gauntlet into buildable parts, survives a chaotic mis-parsed material run, and hand-crafts the piece, producing the story's first confirmed Mythic-grade item: the Mythical Blight Jackal, a gauntlet bonded permanently to his arm that carries a private storage subspace, an essence battery, a device-locking network, and Subsume, which converts kills into real-time growth or steals a demon's ability, plus a lethal semi-autonomous drone. Rather than hide it, his parents set a new strategy: grow Sal's power and build outside alliances instead of retreating or sacrificing the auction house, which Sal insists on keeping. They seal a materials-and-protection alliance with Luke's independent militia, field-testing the drone in a dangerous variant dungeon where it slaughters demon after demon, Sal's stats climb through Subsume, and Sophia fights on-page for the first time in years. Back home, Sal crafts weapons for the militia, personalized gifts for his friends, and dedicated healing gear for both parents, learning Sophia's injuries are worse than he knew. At a final breakfast, Maurice learns the family's secret and the depot renovation formally opens to Fabi's input. Sal flies back to Quest Academy with Fabi, who reveals her own solo dungeon-clearing and proposes regular joint runs to prepare him for the looming portal expedition, as he resolves to prove himself worthy of his rank.
How does it end? (ending)
Book 4 closes with the family's crisis over Sal's abilities turned into a forward plan rather than an open wound. The parental-secret reveal is fully reconciled: Sal has confronted both parents, they have apologized, and the three now work as partners in his safety. The book's climax is his completion of the Mythical Blight Jackal, the story's first Mythic-grade item, a gauntlet bonded to his arm carrying a storage subspace, an essence battery, a device-locking network, and Subsume, a kill-triggered growth-and-theft ability, plus a lethal semi-autonomous drone. Rather than hide it, the family commits to making Sal stronger and building outside alliances, sealing a formal materials-and-protection pact with Luke's independent militia and field-testing the drone in a dangerous variant dungeon, where Sophia also fights on-page for the first time in years. The Argento Auction House, which his parents would have sacrificed for his safety, is preserved at Sal's insistence, and its depot renovation formally opens to joint planning with Fabi and her father Maurice. Sal equips both parents with healing gear, learning his mother's injuries are worse than he knew, and himself with imperfect protective gear. Every major relationship ends settled: his parents reconciled, Divinity's marriage-prophecy thread retired, and Fabi reaffirming their partnership. She proposes regular joint dungeon runs to grow his stats ahead of a reactivated, mandatory portal expedition, still shadowed by an earlier prophecy of a portal death for Sal. He flies back to Quest Academy resolved to prove himself worthy of his top rank. The suspicion about Robert's power, the militia alliance, and the wider war all carry forward into the next book.
