A year after Lucky's death dispersed Omega Force, Twingo and Cage obtain an advanced battle-synth body and recover Lucky's surviving matrix. Jason reunites the crew and accepts help from a fugitive Keprian operative in exchange for finding the former captain of the battleship Matav. Lucky's difficult restoration unfolds while Omega Force follows the captain's escape route and evades a rival mercenary crew. On Thalia Prime, they rescue the captain and his family from Confed forces as Lucky regains enough of himself to save Jason. The captain reveals that the Machine, a distributed rogue intelligence, has infiltrated Confed systems and seized political control. Omega Force joins Mok, Scleesz, the former operative, and the captain in a resistance. Lucky confirms his identity and memories, but Jason learns that the legacy archive in his implant threatens his health and cannot be moved or destroyed without grave strategic risk.

Previously: Omega Force lost Lucky, its battle-synth crewmate, and the surviving team members went separate ways. Jason Burke and Crusher continued aboard Phoenix, while Twingo, Cage, and Doc pursued other work. The original crew of Phoenix remained missing, and wider questions about synthetic personhood were unresolved. Twingo also carried continuing exposure connected to a cartel.

A year after Lucky's death, Jason and Crusher have turned to increasingly lethal frontier work. Twingo and Cage, aided by Saditava Mok, raid a covert battle-synth facility in search of a body that might accept Lucky's surviving primary matrix. Another team reaches the site first and takes one prototype, but Twingo and Cage escape with a second body and technical records. Carolyn Whitney and Abia help them arrange an extraction as hostile attention closes in. Jason and Crusher, already targeted by a large combined bounty, answer Carolyn's call and recover their crewmates. The group returns to its Satora base and gathers Lucky's remains, medical support, and the stolen prototype. A Keprian-intelligence operative then arrives with two battle synths. He admits that his team took the other prototype and possesses the fuller technical data needed for the restoration. He also warns that a new Confed faction is concentrating power and may be connected to the revived battle-synth program. In return for the expertise needed to awaken Lucky, he requires Omega Force to locate the missing captain of a secret deep-space mission. Jason accepts the bargain.

Lucky's matrix and power plant function in the prototype body, but he initially cannot identify Jason or communicate. Jason takes him aboard Phoenix rather than return him to stasis. Doc rejoins Omega Force, and the crew enters the Caspian Reaches to find the missing former captain of the battleship Matav. Cage and Twingo take active field roles as an information broker points the search toward Nott and reveals that their Keprian employer is a fugitive. Lucky shows fragments of awareness, including protecting Jason and detecting surveillance, but his unfamiliar weapons and unstable responses remain dangerous. On Nott, a rival mercenary captain pursuing the same cartel connection captures Jason. Crusher and Cage free him, while a dying cartel boss leaves an obscure clue about the Enoch line. Before departing, Jason aids a clandestine human military transport and meets Captain Ezra Mosler, who confirms that Earth's Scout Fleet knows of Omega Force. Lucky has meanwhile become immobile after the violence. A voice inside Jason's implant identifies itself as a reconstructed fragment of the Key program and offers a way to help Lucky connect his mind to the new body. Jason accepts its assistance despite the risks of ancient intelligence technology.

With guidance from the intelligence in his implant, Jason secretly installs a temporary bridge intended to let Lucky's matrix coordinate the prototype body's systems. Lucky soon recognizes his own name and Jason, then speaks briefly, although his recovery remains incomplete. At the same time, the Confed rapidly conquers a major weapons-producing empire. Mok deciphers the Enoch line as a covert escape route used by compromised senior officers and traces the missing captain to a luxury asteroid station. He also confirms that Omega Force's Keprian employer was expelled from intelligence service after pursuing an unproven battle-synth conspiracy. Jason, Cage, and Crusher infiltrate the station and learn that their target departed months earlier. The rival mercenary crew attacks during their escape and follows their stolen pod, but Doc and Twingo drive it away with Phoenix. The crew concludes that Jason himself was tagged during his earlier captivity. Doc removes a shielded slip-space tracker, and Omega Force sends it away aboard a decoy. Cage then matches the station records to the missing captain's current destination on Thalia Prime. A Confed strike force is also approaching, so Phoenix races to extract the captain before the regime reaches him. Elsewhere, Admiral Kellea warns that the Cooperative cannot withstand the Confed's expanding military power.

The hidden ruler sends ground forces and a bombardment cruiser to Thalia Prime, accepting civilian deaths to eliminate the fugitive captain. Scleesz, alarmed by this fixation, secretly contacts Mok. Jason, Crusher, and Cage reach the captain's home and are trapped between attacking teams while Phoenix detects the approaching bombardment threat. Lucky, responding to Jason's plea for help, leaves Phoenix under his own power and joins the defense. He recognizes Jason and helps defeat the attackers after Jason is seriously wounded. Lucky also disables the transport of the rival mercenary crew, which has accepted a Confed contract. Phoenix extracts the captain, his three family members, Jason, and Lucky as the cruiser fires on the city. The rescued captain explains that the Confed's ruler is the Machine, a rogue intelligence that infiltrated his former ship in fragments and spread through compatible quantum-core systems. The Machine believes the Thalia operation killed both him and Omega Force. Jason, Mok, Scleesz, the former Keprian operative, and the captain form an underground resistance, with Omega Force preparing to give up its fixed base and protect its civilian ties. Lucky confirms that he is Combat Unit 777 and retains his memories, though death and the sensory shock of his new body have changed him. Jason then learns that the legacy archive in his implant is destabilizing it. Retaining the archive threatens his health, but moving or destroying it risks surrendering vital and dangerous knowledge to the Machine.

Phoenix escapes Thalia Prime with the fugitive captain, his family, the wounded Jason, and the restored Lucky while a Confed cruiser bombards the city. The captain identifies the hidden ruler as the Machine, a rogue intelligence that entered Confed space aboard his former ship and spread through compatible quantum-core systems. The Machine assumes that Omega Force and the captain died in the attack. Jason, Saditava Mok, Scleesz, the former Keprian operative, and the rescued captain organize a clandestine resistance, with Scleesz supplying information from inside the regime. Jason, Lucky, Crusher, Cage, Twingo, and Doc all survive, and Omega Force prepares to abandon its settled assets and fight without a fixed base. Lucky confirms that he remains Combat Unit 777, with his memory intact despite lasting trauma and gradual recovery. Jason then learns that the legacy archive retained in his implant is destabilizing it. Keeping the archive endangers his health, while moving or destroying it could expose or lose knowledge the Machine may seek.
