Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Ruwen Starfield (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
Eiru's Architect and postwar leader. Three days after the city is retaken, he turns from immediate recovery work toward a journey that will use a step championship as cover for rescuing Lylan's brother.
Hamma (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Ruwen's partner, recently advanced to level 20. She chooses to accompany the championship and rescue expedition instead of returning directly to Deepwell, despite knowing her parents will be concerned.
Rami (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Ruwen's soulbound bookworm companion and intelligence specialist. Even while elsewhere, she can follow his thoughts and perceive through his senses, allowing her to remain involved in Eiru's planning without standing beside him.
Niall Blakrock (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Hamma's father and one of Eiru's Elders. He joins the planning for revival and fair resettlement as the recovered city confronts overcrowded storage, a vast revival queue, and the need for new communities.
Uru (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
The deity whose authority has passed to Ruwen through his role as Architect. She remains Eiru's public divine figure while he asks Niall to speak for him as chief high priest and help connect the city with her lands.
Blapy (Supporting)
Also known as Miranda
First appears in chapter 4
A powerful ally also known in her divine form as Miranda. Uru summons her to witness the private proceeding in which Niall exercises his right to judge the deity.
Fractal (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 5
The sentient keeper of Ruwen's Shattered Sun dungeon. Ruwen directs a fallen enemy's body to him rather than the temple so that Fractal can investigate its unusual tattoos and possibly reproduce their effects.
Sift (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 12
Ruwen's step-fighting partner and a member of the team using the Malth championship as cover for a rescue. Because recognition could compromise the operation, the planning group must find a way to suppress his identity before the journey.
Lylan (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 12
A member of the Malth rescue party whose appearance must be disguised before the group travels. The covert mission is intended to recover her imprisoned brother, and the step championship gives her allies a public reason to enter the city.
Xavier (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 12
A celestial remnant allied with Ruwen's group and present for the Malth planning session. He joins the discussion as the party identifies which travelers need disguises and which require protection from magical identification.
Kai (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 13
The organizer of the covert rescue and its tournament cover. She recruits an Ink Lord, assigns the scouting party for a temple operation, and directs Ruwen and Sift toward training needed for their public role.
Dalyn (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 13
Lylan's brother and the prisoner the group intends to free from a Legion vault. The rescue is the expedition's central concealed objective, while the step championship provides a public reason for the party to enter Malth.
Tremine (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 13
An Ink Lord and former associate of Kai. He agrees to help Ruwen obtain access to a qualifying epic book, provided he receives a copy, because guild rules prevent him from simply supplying one from his own collection.
Madda and Padda (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 14
Sift's parents and the instructors Ruwen and Sift approach for soul-move training before the championship. The pair travel through the Shattered Sun to consult them, hoping their teaching will support a credible tournament cover.
Clarissa Starfield and Colin Starfield (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 14
Ruwen's parents. They leave Eiru on a confidential mission that they say will support both Uru and their son. Ruwen does not learn their destination, but authorizes them to take whatever equipment they require from the temple vault.
Izac
First appears in chapter 21
The deity associated with Malth, where the group must carry out its covert prison mission. His city and Legion vault are the destination once Ruwen's concealment preparations are complete, making his domain the setting for both the championship and rescue.
Echo (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 22
A white-haired half-demon Ruwen previously freed during a trial. A blood-name mark links them, allowing him to summon her and possibly allowing her to detect him at close range, which makes her a serious risk to the Malth disguise.
Mai and Yap (Minor)
First appears in chapter 25
The Team Avalanche fighters opposing Ruwen and Sift in their opening championship match. Mai uses air-based soul magic and diversions, while Yap can increase gravity in a limited area, forcing their late-arriving opponents to adapt quickly.
Claw and Stinger (Minor)
First appears in chapter 26
The gem-level stepmasters of the Burning Scorpions, a red-skinned pair associated with volcanic regions. Sift identifies them as leading championship favorites while he and Ruwen assess the strongest teams after their opening match.
Chip and Stump (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 32
The lizard-dragon fighters of Team Apex, representing the Black Pyramid in the championship. Tournament recordings establish them as possible future opponents for Ruwen and Sift, and their affiliation suggests that Blapy is present in Malth.
Blackout (Minor)
First appears in chapter 32
A Team Tornado Fist fighter and the rift ghost Sift previously fought outside Eiru. Their history creates a risk that she will recognize his techniques and expose his concealed identity during the championship.
Smack (Minor)
First appears in chapter 33
Blackout's much larger teammate on Team Tornado Fist. Ruwen identifies him as a jade cultivator who uses strength-based soul magic when the team appears for its match against Ruwen and Sift.
Overlord (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 39
A construct within Ruwen's mind that begins speaking and acting independently while Ruwen tries to draw the agony of a bookworm trap away from Rami.
Numarrow
First appears in chapter 39
Izac's Ink Lord and the authority over the archive's restricted eighth floor. His office contains a concealed safe that Rami investigates during the gathering, despite Ruwen's warning that the hidden compartment is likely protected.
Jailer of Legion's Vault (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 41
The official at Legion's Vault who alone can open the dimensional bubble enclosing Rami's cage.
Andi Kandi (Minor)
First appears in chapter 48
A tournament reporter who interviews Ruwen and Sift after their victory over the Realm Breakers. She questions them as officials dismiss accusations of prohibited power use and the crowd reacts to their extraordinary performance.
Ishdell (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 58
Kai's contact among the Legion guards and the rescue team's guide inside the prison. He accompanies the forged prisoner-transfer party toward the fifth vault and receives a blinker tied to the underwater refuge for the planned escape.
