After Eiru survives Naktos's invasion, Ruwen Starfield arranges its recovery and joins a covert expedition to Malth, where a step championship masks the attempt to free Lylan's brother Dalyn. Fractal's elixir and Ruwen's Scarecrow aspect unexpectedly transform all twelve of his meridians to Diamond, while Sift discovers unprecedented soul abilities. Rami is captured in Izac's archive, forcing the team to add her rescue to the fifth-vault operation. The championship draws dangerous attention, and Izac and Echo prepare a trap inside the emptied prison. Echo kills Ishdell, but Ruwen defeats the jailer, recovers Rami, and sends Hamma, Sift, Lylan, Dalyn, and Rami toward home. He enters a random escape door alone and emerges in deep space. Newly recognized as an Ink Lord and accompanied only by Overlord, Ruwen survives by creating a small shelter, but every gate fails and Blapy's summoning coin cannot reach her.

Previously: Ruwen Starfield became Eiru's Architect and took responsibility for people aligned with Uru. Naktos invaded, forcing Ruwen and his allies into a battle for the city. Hamma, Sift, Rami, Lylan, Blapy, and the sentient dungeon keeper Fractal became central to his efforts. Eiru survived, but the victory left reconstruction, revival, and resettlement unfinished. Lylan's brother Dalyn remained a Legion prisoner, giving the group another urgent objective.

Eiru is secure but damaged after the invasion. Ruwen directs the Elders to revive adults, restore household resources, and distribute the population among thirty planned settlements rather than allowing wealth to determine access to the rebuilt city. Niall Blakrock learns that Uru erased his memories of his family. He declines to punish her, though he cannot forgive her, and accepts leadership of the three temples after arranging to reunite with his wife. Hamma remains committed to the championship expedition and Dalyn's rescue. At the Shattered Sun, Blapy gives Ruwen the dungeon manual and helps Hamma and Niall use Fractal's routes to Deepwell. Fractal has already reproduced and improved a legendary transformation elixir. Blapy then explains the deeper importance of his crystal-based existence: Fractal preserves both memory and sentience without a deity. She intends to combine that discovery with her own work to create revival independent of divine control, a project that could protect Ruwen's people but would make Fractal a target.

Ruwen approves a Black Pyramid library branch inside the Shattered Sun and negotiates terms that preserve copies of Fractal's discoveries for the dungeon. Fractal's improved elixir and Ruwen's Scarecrow aspect produce an unforeseen result: his body dissolves and rebuilds with all twelve meridians advanced directly to Diamond. At Izac's archive, Rami absorbs books while Ruwen surveys the gathering. She reaches Ink Lord Numarrow's restricted office and triggers a trap built to harm bookworms. The pain passes through their bond, and Ruwen's internal Overlord construct begins speaking independently as it helps him endure the attack. Ruwen reaches the eighth floor and finds Rami injured inside a red cage enclosed by a dimensional bubble. Numarrow explains that only the jailer of the Legion vault can open the bubble. Ruwen incapacitates him and takes the cage key, but guards are seconds away and a specialist would need too long to break the barrier. Killing defenders would expose the entire group and end Dalyn's rescue. Ruwen therefore places Numarrow alive in his Voidband and escapes, leaving Rami behind. Her likely transfer to the Legion vault means the planned prison operation must now recover two captives instead of one.

Kai accepts Ruwen's decision to leave Rami as the only way to preserve both rescues, though Xavier attacks him in grief before accepting the explanation. In the next championship match, Ruwen and Sift face Echo and her infernal butcher teammate. Ruwen gets his companions and Dalyn into the Death Ring, defeats the jailer, and retrieves Rami's cage while refusing Echo's attempt to end their blood debt on her terms. Lylan uses the stasis key to free Rami. Rami determines that a Pillar door will open randomly into the material realm and prepares to draw a home gate once someone clears the route. Ruwen takes Hamma's Blapy-summoning coin and enters alone, allowing the others a path home and intending Echo to believe he died.

Ruwen enters a random Pillar door first so the others can escape and Echo can believe he died. He appears in open space, alive but outside the reach of Uru, the Black Pyramid, and every known destination. His Architect abilities supply a small shelter and air, and delayed notifications confirm that he is now a level-26 Ink Lord with Bamboo and Viper at master rank 99 pending their trial. His gates all fail, and Hamma's summoning coin turns black without bringing Blapy.
