In short (whole book)

Back at Quest Academy as its top first-year Savior, Sal Argento sets out to found a support-focused crafting guild while training in combat and juggling a heavy course load. He invents new abilities, builds an industrial elixir machine that reaches Mythic grade, and collapses from an untrained inherited ability, then recovers to formally register the Mythic Guild and receive a legendary armor set from his friends. Warned that the Delvers figure Shade means to target him, he builds a third Mythic machine, Athena, that can diagnose and even repair ability weaves. Before the confrontation can play out, a full demon invasion strikes a nearby district; Sal kills a commander-class demon single-handed, his advisor Vanessa is revealed as a hidden powerhouse, and Shade is exposed and arrested. In the aftermath Sal founds and equips the guild in earnest and, in a quiet final arc, uses Athena to repair his friend Divinity's blocked precognition, rebuilding its missing foundation by hand. The book ends with the two heading off to spar over a wager about her guild-barring scholarship.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously in the Quest Academy series: Sal Argento, a guarded young man whose silver eyes appraise any object and who can copy other people's abilities, enrolled at Quest Academy, where heroes train to reclaim demon-held land. During skill registration he accidentally fused several powers into a unique crafting ability the Academy calls Mythcrafter, became the protege of the crafting lecturer Upgrade, and befriended the foresight-gifted Divinity Khan. He helped expose Bastion, a wealthy faction seeding loyal students, cleared a Tower trial that became a real demon incursion, created Perfect, a flawless self-improving ability, and was named the single best of the Academy's first Saviors. Home for the break, he discovered his auctioneer parents, Petro and Sophia, were once frontline heroes of the Silverson Group, cast out decades ago and hiding their past to keep him off the Hunter Bureau's radar. Reconciled with them, he trained in the family's anti-demon martial style, met Fabi, a top crafter and his crafting partner, and built an automated fabrication machine, the Arkwright. Learning that pure silver harms demons, he hand-crafted the story's first Mythic-grade item: a bonded gauntlet carrying a storage subspace, an essence battery, and Subsume, a kill-triggered growth ability, plus a lethal drone. Rather than hide it, his family chose to grow his power and forge outside alliances, sealing a pact with an independent militia. Sal returned to Quest Academy far stronger, with a Mythic weapon, a training partner in Fabi, and a support-focused guild he still means to found, all against the shadow of a looming, mandatory portal expedition.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

So far this book: Sal and Fabi return to Quest Academy for the second semester and move onto the exclusive Savior floor, with its communal workshop, sparring room, and strategy center. Ranked the top first-year, Sal is pressed by the alchemist Alex to finally deliver a long-promised elixir-production device within two weeks. He enrolls in a demanding essence-programming course and, after building the elixir device's first draft around the wrong ability, restarts the design from scratch. He also learns his drone, Jackal, can genuinely learn and grow, and that improving it requires essence programming rather than more crafting. Most significantly, he gives his mentor Upgrade a blueprint and materials for her own powerful device, built from a rare synthesized stone rather than the dangerous material behind his own Mythic gauntlet, and reframes the extravagant gift as a bribe for her to formally join his forming guild as a mentor, which she accepts. Upgrade is stunned to learn Sal's auctioneer parents personally trained and dungeon-dived with him. Sal reprioritizes the semester toward combat and his Savior identity, reads his father's martial-arts manual cover to cover, and begins intensive sparring-room training, even as his backlog of crafting commissions and the elixir deadline mount.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Sal throws himself into essence programming, where his classmate Anthony proves a natural far beyond Sal's own struggling grasp of the subject, while Upgrade teaches the new course and is close to finishing her own device. Working at the simulation orb, Sal invents a new ability, Genesis, that transforms organic matter, discovered through a thread-interlacing efficiency trick he names the ravel method. He reconciles at last with Hannah, whose earlier mind-controlled outburst had estranged them; she returns and then keeps the barrier gauntlets he made her, and the two rebuild their friendship honestly. A public classroom confrontation forces Sal to explain his unprecedented essence capacity and a rare, self-replenishing state called Essence Fortification, which Divinity vouches for outright, silencing a doubting lecturer. Over lunch and canteen conversations the friend group reforms, and Sal meets Mika, a blunt offense specialist rated among the strongest in the Savior class, who dismisses his trainee guild as a poor career move but agrees to reconsider once it proves itself. At the semester-opening assembly, the headmaster, Quest, lifts the brutal first-year war curriculum, restructures grading around continuous assessment, announces an eventual Hunter Bureau raid as the semester's goal, and publicly recognizes Sal's Academy-approved trainee guild, turning the whole room's attention on him.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Sorting through module choices with Divinity's help, Sal locks in a heavy schedule and awaits a masterclass with the elusive Coach. Studying a classmate's rare Mimicry ability, he registers two powerful new abilities of his own, culminating in Sovereign, and begins imagining a self-sustaining, core-consuming combat drone. He hands that drone project to Fabi and turns the elixir device into an ambitious three-station machine, recruiting Blathnaid as fabrication contractor plus Anthony and Jack, and offering the alchemist Alex a profit share to run it. As the team builds at speed, using Fabi's Figment ability to conjure oversized, high-grade components, Fabi accidentally discovers she can retroactively upgrade an already-finished item's grade with a wave of her hand, pushing pieces from epic to legendary at a steep essence cost. The discovery both thrills and unsettles the group, raising new questions about how far the trick can go, as the increasingly industrial machine takes shape.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

The team assembles and activates the full elixir machine, a three-station device that grows, refines, and transmutes its own ingredients. Encouraged by Upgrade to push it as far as it will go, Sal pours enormous amounts of essence into the machine to drive it toward Mythic grade, but as the last components turn red he collapses, his eyes bleeding. He wakes days later in the infirmary, blind and bandaged, his father Petro at his side. The cause is revealed: Sal unconsciously triggered Allsight, a dangerous perception ability inherited from his father, before his body was ready for it. The machine is confirmed Mythic grade, only the second such item ever made, appraised by Petro himself, though its grade now threatens the guild's trainee status. Petro, appearing on-page for the first time this book, is stunned to learn the martial style Sal has been training via his visor has evolved far beyond the eight basic stances he actually wrote, and gives his blessing to keep training it. Sal, facing weeks of recovery, has also quietly commissioned Fabi to build a self-sustaining drone and a healing mask meant to fix his straining eyes.

Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)

Sal spends roughly three weeks in the infirmary under close, deliberately slow supervision, chafing at the restrictions. He covertly builds a diagnostic scanner from his medical equipment and donates it to the infirmary, and is finally discharged, cleared for crafting up to epic grade but barred from higher work until Coach arrives. He learns that the Delvers Guild figure Shade has inserted himself into Savior training, personally offering to tutor the five top-ranked students, Sal included, which Sal and his father treat with deep suspicion. His guild is formally registered with the United Guilds Association as the Mythic Guild, a Tier 8 specialist guild with Vanessa and Upgrade as advisors and Petro as sponsor. The healing-mask commission proves to be more than it seemed: the elixir-machine team has been developing a mastery-boosting elixir, delivered as an inhalable vapor through the mask Fabi is building, that raises the user's ability mastery to full for a stretch at a time, meant to stop the strain destroying Sal's eyes. Sparring with his father, Sal proves his visor-evolved martial style is genuinely combat-effective, though Petro's speed and strength still clearly outmatch him.

Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)

A reclusive automation crafter sends Sal an elaborate material-transport device, and his Guild Mastery lecturer, Jez, hands him a concrete dossier of kill targets and dungeons to climb toward Tier 7. The mask commission is then revealed to have secretly grown into a full coordinated armor set, Tempest Marshall, appraised at legendary grade and built by Upgrade, Fabi, and Blathnaid, its risky Overdrive output function deliberately offset by the built-in mastery elixir. Sal field-tests the set across two dungeons with a large group of friends: its lightning-based functions let him raise his physical stats simply by killing lower-tier demons, and its signature Tempest attack clears whole levels at once. His drone, Jackal, completes its first evolution mid-run, gaining new capabilities and independently saving Divinity's life from a hidden ambush the group had never noticed in many prior runs of that dungeon. The outings validate Sal's new power set completely, but leave Barry quietly suspicious about how such fast, low-effort stat growth is even possible and what must be gating it.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

Divinity finally explains Shade's plan: a staged trip into a red zone dressed up as a recruitment showcase for the Delvers Guild, with Sal as the real target, meant to pressure him into revealing the grade of his gear, and carrying a risk of abduction if he admits it is Mythic. Sal and Petro prepare a covert protection plan using the guild's advisors. Meanwhile the long-awaited Coach arrives, and Sal talks him into a build: reproducing and evolving Coach's diagnostic ability and folding it, along with the headmaster's data-gathering ability, into a third Mythic-grade machine. Appraised, it proves extraordinary, an evolving intelligence that can diagnose a person's limits and, through a function called Ascension, even repair broken ability weaves. Sal names the machine Athena and its public-facing system Legion, planning to disguise it as a revived, Coach-fronted version of the headmaster's old scoring system. A sharp discrepancy surfaces between Quest's assessment that Sal faces almost no abduction risk and Divinity's far more alarmed warning.

Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)

Training alone in a dungeon cluster ahead of the Shade outing, Sal is caught in a full demon invasion that breaches a nearby city district. Choosing to fight rather than evacuate, he kills a commander-class demon single-handed to save the hero Villa, validating his gear against top-tier threats. The attack proves to be one coordinated front among several, meant partly as a distraction, and the guild advisor Vanessa is revealed as a hidden powerhouse who cuts down commander after commander by herself. The invasion's field commander, a giant psionic, self-regenerating war spider, is finally killed underground by Vanessa and Mika together. In the aftermath, testimony from the dying exposes that Shade ordered his own guild members to hold the line as bait, causing their deaths, and he is arrested, though his ultimate fate is left to the Hunter Bureau and the guild association. Vanessa, who once belonged to the Delvers herself, predicts nothing will really come of it.

Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)

The invasion over, Sal spends hours on menial cleanup among displaced residents, disturbed by how numb everyone seems to the loss. Returning to the Academy, he finally erupts at the headmaster, Quest, over the war's cost, the Hunter Bureau's long tolerance of Shade, and the fact that his own tiny guild accounted for more than half the district's commander kills. Quest, moved, drops his objections and offers active support, including outside-guild training arrangements for Barry and Rochelle. Back in Sal's dorm, Upgrade and Fabi have fed the Athena machine several major databases, and Sal adopts a cover story, crediting his sudden physical growth to an assimilation effect from a crafting material rather than to his drone. Placed into Athena for his own first live session, Sal finds the machine pulling data straight from his body and weaves and rapidly testing dozens of variant designs through his own ability, doubling as an automated training tool rather than a mere diagnostic.

Story so far - through chapter 87 (this book)

Sal's Athena session gives him a full profile of his abilities: a suitability map across every weave category, and a five-stage crafting progression track placing him at its middle stage with two more to climb. With the demonstration done, the Mythic Guild holds its first official meeting, summoned by the headmaster over Upgrade's objection. Sal lays out the guild's support-first identity and its plan to share his Mythic-grade crafting with members rather than gatekeep it, revealing his own bonded gauntlet as the template. When a prospective member questions why a guild with such tools needs fighters at all, Villa and Vanessa reveal to the room that Sal personally killed a commander-class demon and saved roughly thirty volunteers during the invasion. The full first-generation roster signs contracts one-on-one, several members stunned to learn membership pays a wage, and Sal privately reckons the guild is financially secure for years. Upgrade, Vanessa, and Villa are confirmed as its three advisors.

Story so far - through chapter 90 (this book)

In a private catch-up, Divinity finally admits she has been unable to see the future clearly since Sal's hospitalization, tracing the block to grief over a bright future she lost when Fabi's ability changed it, and reveals the Hunter Bureau scholarship that supports her family and bars her from joining any guild. Rather than simply pay off the scholarship, Sal runs her through Athena, safely raises her ability's grade with Ascension, and then, over two chapters of delicate manual work, rebuilds the foundational first stage her ability had been missing entirely, which had capped its ceiling. She gains a genuine, low-cost new activation mode alongside her old all-out power, plus a self-training plan for the remaining stages, and stably manifests an upgraded, golden-winged form under full control. She glimpses that the guild will eventually need a portal expedition to claim a rare power-source material for Athena. Sal tells her the invasion's final tally for the first time, seven commander kills, one his and six Vanessa's, and Shade's arrest. The book ends with the two heading off to spar on a wager: if Sal wins, he gets to intervene personally on her scholarship; if she wins, he must stop making her equipment. Her scholarship conflict, and the outcome of the spar, are left unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Book 5 closes on aftermath and consolidation rather than a cliffhanger. The invasion of a nearby district is fully repelled across every front, its psionic war-spider commander dead and the Delvers figure Shade arrested, though his ultimate fate and the Delvers Guild's future are left open. Sal ends the book as a publicly credited commander-slayer and the head of a fully contracted, well-funded, heavily equipped Mythic Guild, its first-generation roster signed and its advisors, Upgrade, Vanessa, and Villa, confirmed. Vanessa is revealed as by far its most powerful fighter, credited with six of the guild's seven commander kills to Sal's one. His crafting machine Athena is complete and proven, having diagnosed his own abilities and repaired his friend Divinity's precognition, giving her a controllable new activation mode and a path to develop the rest herself. Several major threads carry forward: Divinity's Hunter Bureau scholarship still bars her from the guild, now wagered on a sparring match whose outcome the book does not show; the guild will eventually need a portal expedition or a Red Zone push to claim a rare power source held only by the Hunter Bureau's president and a reclusive materials patron; Sal owes Divinity an unfinished gift and himself a further crafting stage; and his newly public Mythic-grade capability may draw unwanted attention. No death or betrayal closes the book; it ends mid-relationship, with Sal and Divinity heading off to spar.
