Former captain of the Rocinante, back aboard his ship after years as Laconia's prisoner. He is old, out of practice, and no longer in command of anything; Naomi runs the resistance and he is one more person on the crew. He is also, from having lived in the high consul's household, one of the few people alive who has some idea what Winston Duarte was trying to do.

Engineer of the Rocinante and the head of the underground, now operating openly with her crew rather than alone in a shipping container. She is the one who decides what the resistance spends its remaining strength on, and she has begun to suspect that beating Laconia is no longer the problem that matters.

The Rocinante's pilot, still flying the same ship after a lifetime, with a grown son somewhere in the same war and very little appetite left for losing people.

The Rocinante's mechanic, returned from Laconia physically altered by what was done to him there. He does not sleep as people do, does not damage as people do, and is otherwise recognizably himself: direct, incurious about his own condition, and organized entirely around the people he has decided to protect.

A Laconian marine officer of formidable competence and very little patience, assigned to find the missing high consul and bring him back. She is used to being the most dangerous person present and to being given assignments that cannot officially exist, and she takes the failure of a mission personally to a degree that worries her superiors.

Laconia's senior scientist, in charge of the empire's entire research effort against whatever lives beyond the ring gates. Conscripted years ago and never released, she has the resources of a government and a problem that is getting worse faster than she can characterize it, and she is one of the few people in either camp being honest about how little anyone understands.

A geologist and Elvi's husband, working alongside her aboard the Falcon and providing the running commentary that keeps her from disappearing entirely into the work.

Acting head of the Laconian state, ruling in the name of a high consul he cannot produce. He is a competent administrator holding together an empire that depends on a man who is not available, while the losses at the gates get worse, and he knows exactly how little time that arrangement buys him.

High consul of Laconia, absent. He was left broken by the entities beyond the gates and has since disappeared from his own capital, and the empire's most urgent secret is that nobody knows where he is or what he has become. Prior-book knowledge for a reader starting this volume.
