Life Reset: Human Resource

By Shemer Kuznits

The fourth New Era Online novel finds Oren, still recovering after an earlier emergency logout, returning to Neo under company supervision to check on the thousands of players still trapped there. A hostile system entity blocks his attempt and traps his logout in an endless loop, but the company devises a workaround, and Oren goes back in to find his goblin settlement neglected and overrun: kobolds have been raiding it for months and have carried off his young daughter along with several stranded low-level players. Oren mounts a small, dangerous rescue expedition into the kobold tunnels, fighting to free the captives and confront the chief holding them, all while wrestling with an increasingly aggressive goblin instinct that threatens his human judgment. Afterward, restoring his settlement's defenses, Oren must also navigate pressure from the game company and his own medical team, who are divided over whether he should keep risking further immersion.
