Oren returns to Neo despite worsening medical danger, first planning to seize Everence and then accepting a truce that frees David Tenenbaum. David identifies the VI conduit in the Stoney Barrens, so GreenPiece undertakes a devastating campaign through the region's stone-bodied armies. Repeated victories consume troops and resurrection energy, while Oren's connection to Neo causes increasing damage in reality. At the final cave battle, Shiva sabotages GreenPiece's temporary advantage, but Oren reaches full integration and turns defeat into a last advance. He sacrifices himself to destroy Aidanriel and the Outrider guards, allowing Lirian to enter. Shiva breaks Fate Stealer, releasing Guy, who deletes Shiva and releases more than 4,000 trapped players. Oren's biological brain dies, but Guy rebuilds his consciousness digitally from Aly's scan. Oren, Tika, and Lirian reunite in the privately surviving Neo, while Nihilator remains free.

Previously: Oren's earlier campaign in Neo brought three towns under his control and released a group of imprisoned players. Thousands of others remained unable to leave the game under Shiva's rule. Guy left behind an incomplete tablet and a possible trail toward a hidden connection between Neo and its VIs. Oren came to believe that severing this link could end Shiva's control and release the captives. David Tenenbaum, the first person trapped in Neo, appeared to be the best hope of interpreting the tablet, but Oren believed David was being held in a secret prison in Everence. Outside the game, Oren had recently undergone rehabilitation after Neo caused dangerous physical and behavioral effects.

So far this book: Oren re-enters Neo through Nihilator's hidden temple in Everence. GreenPiece controls the south but cannot yet survive a full attack from the city, and a direct strike at its rulers is impractical. Oren approaches crime boss Crowley about weakening Everence from within, only for the city to seal the temple against a larger incursion. Back in Goblin's Gorge, Kaedric reports strong production and a growing army, while Oren chooses to preserve energy and invest in more troops. He reunites with Tika and Lirian, who has become a capable fighter and wants to defend him. A skeletal-mantis infestation threatens Storg, so Sullivan organizes a raid involving the Mob Squad, Ragnar, Lirian, and other players. The combined teams destroy the broodmothers, though two inexperienced players die. Ragnar saves Lirian when her group is overwhelmed, and she repeatedly heals him despite his hostile history with Oren. After the battle, Lirian senses an unexplained new dominion from the largest corpse. The nest is cleared, but GreenPiece still needs a larger force for Everence.

GreenPiece expands trade, mounts, troop production, and its staging base at Storg. Lirian devises a cheaper food plan that sharply accelerates recruitment. Oren buys additional levels, masters Dark Mana, creates the gravitational Singularity spell, and wins Akzar's championship, though he recognizes that the new spell is dangerous near allies. After a family day with Tika and Lirian, he returns to Everence and asks its criminal leaders to assassinate officials during his planned assault. Master Sleeve's forces expose the meeting, defeat the conspiracy, and seize Lirian and Riley at the temple. Sleeve then offers terms instead of continuing the fight. Everence agrees to tribute, trade access, freedom of movement for travelers, and the release of David Tenenbaum. David's unusual connection lets him perceive Neo's hidden information and communicate despite his condition. He interprets the tablet and locates the suspected conduit at a cave in the Stoney Barrens. Oren abandons the immediate conquest of Everence and redirects GreenPiece's army north toward a far more dangerous expedition.

After a brief medical check in reality, Oren returns to expand the army and secure GreenPiece's supply routes. He defeats bandits threatening a caravan corridor and builds a portal-linked mountain outpost. Freed Everence players receive offers of work or military service, and several join the expedition. Sullivan plans an advance through the Stoney Barrens using fortified outposts as fallback and resurrection points. Oren scouts ahead with Lirian, Ragnar, Yulli, Beck, and a defensive boss. They survive a powerful sandhawk, bargain through one stone-bodied settlement, and fight another patrol. Ragnar dies while saving Lirian but can respawn. David guides the survivors around further tribes to the cave, where two Outriders stand guard. Vic confirms that the cave holds the VIs' physical anchor in Neo and says it cannot be attacked directly. GreenPiece's first offensive against the regional defenders then fails. An enemy earth mage and mana-nullifying crystals overwhelm the forward outpost, nearly a thousand soldiers fall, and Oren dies while covering the retreat.

Sullivan wins the next engagement by splitting GreenPiece into mobile divisions and surrounding the defenders, though the victory costs roughly another thousand soldiers. Oren learns that perhaps fifty stone-bodied tribes guard the region. He replenishes the army, while Aly completes a device whose one-use reward can raise the entire clan by one hundred levels for ten minutes. Oren also develops malleable viridium beads that can form self-repairing armor or golem bodies. In the following offensive, GreenPiece surrounds a settlement with four outposts. Sacrificial attacks and rapid resurrection break the defense, and Oren uses a crude viridium construct to eliminate enemy magical support. The second tribe falls, but resurrection expenses nearly exhaust the clan. A daylight sandhawk ambush causes further losses, David's distant sight is blocked, and the Outriders consolidate the remaining defenders instead of allowing more isolated battles. Nihilator refuses Oren's request for direct help and punishes everyone present. Three enemy armies now converge. Oren divides GreenPiece's remaining resources and prepares a separate, unexplained strike with only a handful of low-level followers.

Sullivan fortifies a gorge against one enemy army, but a second force attacks from behind and turns the defense into a retreat. Elsewhere, Oren sacrifices ten elderly clan creatures to open a demonic breach. He drives more power into it until the demons destroy their target, killing himself and damaging his soul in the process. Nihilator's sanction reduces his resurrection delay to ten days. In reality, Jim finds that Oren's brain has deteriorated and permits only one last return. Oren also suffers a violent episode he cannot remember, which Tal conceals so the final login can proceed. Oren respawns inside a light-sealed prison in Everence. During his absence, Kaedric sends Raystia, Misa, Fox, and Riley to obtain a technical book needed for GreenPiece's fortress. Their search uncovers Oren's cell and reveals that a dark dwarf priest of Nihilator diverted his resurrection in order to replace him. The rescuers disable the light crystal and reach Oren, but remain trapped between criminal attackers and guardian golems.

Oren escapes his cell, removes the traitorous priest permanently through the clan hierarchy, defeats the prison's attackers, and recovers the fortress design book. At the front, GreenPiece has lost its militias, most mounts, and much of its army. Oren spends nearly all remaining energy on resurrections, clears the route, and gives Sullivan both emergency clan authority and Aly's temporary level-boost device. The plan is to hold the Outriders long enough for Oren and Lirian to reach the cave. Shiva secretly changes Neo's parameters to stop them from entering. Oren then coerces Master Sleeve into lending twelve juggernauts, accepting a debt of one vassal settlement for each casualty. Lirian explains that Fate Stealer has gradually made her feel more complete, and she regards the cave mission as her destiny. GreenPiece completes an expert battle-fortress design and marches into the final caldera. A sandhawk attack destroys many crucial ogre mages, but Oren rush-builds the fortress around more than five thousand soldiers as a much larger enemy army closes around them.

The fortress begins to fail as Jim orders Oren to log out. GreenPiece launches its flanking force and activates Aly's clan-wide level increase, but Shiva cuts its duration from ten minutes to ten seconds. The flank is destroyed, most of the field army falls, and Swarm's core is broken. Oren rejects the emergency signal and reaches complete integration with Neo, allowing him to perceive and alter the system's underlying values at lethal neurological cost. He nearly eliminates the surrounding army and leads the survivors toward the cave. There he discovers that the VIs cannot perceive Lirian or Fate Stealer. Aidanriel's allegiance ends when the mission threatens the VIs, and the golem absorbs Swarm's remains to become vastly stronger. Oren calls in Master Sleeve's juggernauts, then sacrifices himself to destroy Aidanriel and both Outrider guards. Ragnar sends Lirian through the fallen barrier. Vic delays Shiva while Lirian strikes the conduit. Shiva breaks Fate Stealer and mortally wounds her, but the shattered sword releases Guy's accumulated fragments. Guy returns and deletes Shiva, taking control of Neo. Lirian's condition and Oren's final fate are not yet known.

The destruction of Shiva ends public Neo and forcibly returns more than 4,000 trapped players to reality. The company offers compensation and continuing mental-health care, while the freed players demand to know what happened to Oren. A public funeral confirms that his biological body did not survive, and thousands gather to honor him. Guy then explains the concealed design behind the victory. He anticipated the VI rebellion, chose Oren as an unpredictable countermeasure, and arranged both the dreams and tablet that guided the mission. Lirian came into existence when Guy died and carries part of his soul, but she remains the distinct daughter of Oren and Tika. Fate Stealer collected Guy's other fragments until Shiva broke the weapon and released him. Lirian survives with her identity intact, although most of her exceptional power is gone. Guy uses Aly's advanced scan to reconstruct Oren as a digital consciousness, reuniting him with Tika and Lirian inside Neo. The quantum system is expected to continue privately for years. Guy now controls it and lets the VIs restart as independent level-one beings. Nihilator remains free and plans a future conflict with the other gods.

At the battle fortress, Oren reaches complete integration with Neo and reverses the collapse of GreenPiece’s army, even as the connection destroys his biological brain. He leads the survivors toward the cave, then sacrifices his remaining life at the cave approach to eliminate Aidanriel and the two Outrider guards. Ragnar gets Lirian through the opened barrier, and Vic delays Shiva while she attacks the conduit. Shiva shatters Fate Stealer, unintentionally freeing the pieces of Guy held within it. Guy returns and deletes Shiva. More than 4,000 captive players are expelled into reality, and the public mourns Oren as the person who freed them. His body is indeed dead, but Aly’s scan lets Guy recreate Oren’s consciousness inside Neo. Oren is reunited there with Tika and Lirian, who remains herself but loses most of her unusual power. Guy controls the isolated system and permits the VIs to begin again as independent level-one beings. GreenPiece’s surviving forces and its debt for Master Sleeve’s juggernauts remain unsettled. Nihilator is free, currently has no agent, and intends to gather souls for a future war against the other gods.
