Tala arrives in the city of Bandfast with her magical training badly damaged, hiding that her core ability still works because revealing it risks losing a fair wage from employers unwilling to pay full mage rates. Taking a lucrative caravan contract to fund her recovery, she works with an inscriber to redesign her body's magical framework from scratch, enduring a painful, disorienting process that leaves her with unusually strong passive abilities and a new visual sense for magic. As she prepares for her first expedition, Tala discovers she has an extraordinarily high innate capacity for power, drawing cautious interest from more experienced mages who recognize she is not an ordinary new graduate.
