Newly graduated and heavily indebted, Tala reaches Bandfast with most of her inscriptions lost. She joins the Caravaner's Guild, receives a powerful staged redesign from Holly, and becomes cargo mage for a caravan to Alefast. In the wilds she joins Brand's covert Order of the Harvest, gathers dangerous magical materials, survives attacks, and attracts the attention of an intelligent teleporting terror bird. Her experiments produce weak blood Archon Stars, while Adam begins teaching her combat. Tala kills a thunderbolt and saves the caravan from a Midnight Fox, though Renix is badly hurt. In Alefast she completes her cargo assignment, trades preserved harvests to Artia for an artifact pouch and knife, and meets Grediv. He confirms her path toward becoming an Archon but warns that her star must become about forty times stronger before evaluation. Tala ends the book studying her adaptive pouch while the terror bird remains nearby.

Tala arrives in Bandfast by teleportation with her keystone intact but her supporting inscriptions erased. Burdened by academy and inherited family debt, she seeks work through the Caravaner's Guild. Recruiter Lyn discovers that Tala already qualifies as a mage and signs her to a five-year or thirty-trip contract as a specialist in dimensional cargo wagons. Lyn also introduces her to Holly, a master inscriber who finds serious flaws in Tala's old design. Tala agrees to a costly staged reconstruction, paying part immediately and promising the remainder after two jobs. Ashin, a guard on her first planned caravan, helps her buy supplies and prepare iron salve, which she uses to shield herself from direct magic. Holly discovers that Tala has exceptionally high power density but accumulates power slowly. A complete redesign would endanger her, so Holly installs a new continuous passive system while postponing the deeper work and Tala's left hand. When the inscriptions activate, Tala wakes with overwhelming sensory and physical enhancement and repeatedly injures herself while relearning basic movement. With Holly and Lyn's help she regains enough control to walk, but four days have passed and her first departure is close.

Holly activates Tala's unusually detailed Mage Sight, which can focus through walls and detect distant magic. Tala then renews her iron coating, leaving most of her magical presence hidden while her eyes remain conspicuous to other mages. At the Wainwright yard she proves able to power increasingly large dimensional cargo slots. The hardest test drains her into unconsciousness, but Himmal teaches her to replace brute force with a precise mental model, greatly improving her efficiency. He also reveals himself as an Archon and offers future sponsorship. In the Guild lounge Tala meets Cran, then the defensive mages Trent and Renix, all of whom react strongly to her strange appearance under Mage Sight. Before leaving Bandfast, five robbers corner her. Tala restrains all of them with altered gravity, sends one for the guards, and earns a reward without killing anyone. She uses the money to secure lodging with Lyn. At dawn she joins an eight-wagon caravan bound for Alefast. Den takes charge of her pack, Divner commands the guards, and earthworking mage Atrexia joins Trent, Renix, and Tala in the caravan's magical contingent. Tala confirms that her unfinished left hand still cannot power the cargo workings, then the convoy departs.

The caravan leaves Bandfast's defenses and enters the wilds, where abundant magic and dangerous creatures force constant vigilance. Tala discovers that her new mind gives her near-perfect recall, and Renix lends her inscription theory. Atrexia drives off a charging thundercattle bull, while guards kill a giant Arcanous bird that dives at Tala. She claims its talons and bones and seals them with iron salve. That night Tala learns that head chef Brand has secretly served the bird's meat. He attempts to silence her, but her defensive inscriptions stop his knife. Brand then explains that selected caravan workers have eaten Arcanous meat for decades despite a prohibition imposed by mages. Tala agrees to investigate the practice and later watches its magic move through Trent and Atrexia without immediate harm. A carnivorous plant attacks Tala at dawn, but her defenses hold until she destroys its core with a borrowed sword. Brand formally admits her to the Order of the Harvest, providing its notebook and identifying token. After further encounters with magical wildlife, Tala collects a branch and berries from an ending tree whose touch dissolves living matter. Trent warns that the sample is an easily concealed killing tool. Tala says she wants to study its opposition to her defenses and accepts his and Renix's informal guidance before attempting anything major.

Brand explains that an intact ending berry can grant temporary resistance to ordinary physical harm, while damage to its seed may kill the consumer. Tala carefully processes two seeds and later eats a berry after an intelligent terror bird teleports beside her, breaks her arm, and escapes her gravity restraint. Atrexia heals the injury. The bird returns peacefully on another night and accepts jerky, leaving its motives uncertain. Meanwhile, Tala refines her cargo-working technique and begins experimenting with power carried in her own blood. The drops merge into a stable spinning sphere linked to her perception. Trent recognizes it as an apparent Archon Star, and Atrexia confirms the resemblance, though it contains at least fifty times less power than expected. Tala can create and combine these weak stars quickly, but doing so leaves her exhausted and ravenous. A passenger offers five gold ounces for a thunderbolt horn needed for a spouse's treatment. Tala finds a thunderbolt and attacks it with her ending-tree branch. The wounded beast unleashes lightning that strips away much of her salve and burns her, yet her defenses regenerate the damage. Its own attack destroys its exposed brain. The caravan harvests the carcass, Tala secures both horns, and the terror bird feeds at the site without attacking anyone.

Tala delivers one thunderbolt horn to the passenger and accepts payment, offering the second if the planned healing construct requires it. Brand promises her a share of the preserved meat and an introduction to an Alefast dimensional-storage seller. Renix confides that he wants independence but feels unready to leave Trent's service, and Tala urges him to define the habits and sacrifices his desired future requires. The terror bird appears in a smaller form, accepts food, doubles in size through dimensional magic, and vanishes, proving that ordinary restraint cannot hold it. Tala asks Adam for combat instruction. He begins with balance, breathing, posture, observation, and independent judgment rather than weapons. Her concurrent experiments produce another weak Archon Star and reveal magic moving with the air in her lungs. As the caravan approaches a dangerous mountain pass, a Midnight Fox attacks. Its lightning injures Renix, but Tala tears away its antlers with escalating gravity, causing the stored lightning to destroy its body. Permanent death is uncertain. Renix survives with numerous broken bones and a concussion. Trent reassures Tala that her intervention saved the caravan and defines her best combat role as a protected single-target striker. The convoy clears the pass and nears the waning city of Alefast, while signs show that the terror bird is still following.

Alefast's gate mages inspect the caravan because a magical entity reportedly impersonated an entire caravan. Tala's iron-based defenses cause a dispute, but the gate commander admits the wagons. Tala completes her cargo assignment, receives payment, and sends messages to Holly and the Wainwrights through Lyn. Trent directs her to the Wandering Magician, where he, Atrexia, and the recovering Renix are staying. Brand introduces Tala to Artia, an Order-connected dealer in magical items. Tala trades preserved parts from Arcanous Beasts and her spare thunderbolt horn for an artifact knife and a dimensional belt pouch that appears to offer an additional spatial defense. At the inn, Grediv, head of the local Archon Council, examines Tala's blood creations. Two drops merge before him, and he confirms that they contain genuine but very weak Archon Stars. Grediv warns that Tala is operating far beyond her limited training. He offers introductory study material, forbids her from investigating time magic before becoming an Archon, and explains that a star is a point through which the soul learns to influence external magic. He advises Tala to delay evaluation until she can make one about forty times stronger. Tala settles into the inn, restores her iron salve, and enters the artifact pouch. It forms a usable interior around her needs and appears to request magical power. She remains indebted, incompletely inscribed, and followed by the unresolved terror bird, but now has a concrete path toward Archon status.
