In short (whole book)

Riley Cruz establishes a warehouse for her artifact-retrieval crew while learning that her apparent inability to cast magic may instead be a rare null power. An Enclave assignment sends the crew after a demon spellbook displayed by Hollywood stuntman Monty Corville, but Corville is killed and Robert and Phoebe Thompson take the book. At the same time, Martha Matthews's coven tries to force Riley into evaluation, Riley's apartment is bombed, and Max Volkov's mother challenges their relationship. The trail leads to a Nebraska missile silo, where the Thompsons use the spellbook to trace a child with both water and air powers for a veil-breaking sacrifice. Riley's crew stops the ritual, recovers the book and its map, and contains Robert. During the fight, Riley absorbs and releases Phoebe's air magic, showing she is not merely a null. The crew later names its base GOAT, and Riley joins Volkov at the Nutcracker memorial he created for his sister Anya, while the elemental child, the bombing, Riley's origins, and several enemies remain unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Riley Cruz was also known as Kid, and Nash Mitchell had used the name Wade Mitchell. Riley, Max Volkov, Nash, Helen, Callie, Dez, Cage Sato, Garth, Craig Ward, Alice, Tegan, Carl, Isaac, Gwendolyn Reynolds, and Zara Bellarose were already established before this volume.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Riley rents a warehouse as a permanent base for her artifact-retrieval crew, although money limits the renovations. Cage Sato assigns the group to recover a demon spellbook publicly displayed in the Hollywood home of stuntman Monty Corville. Craig Ward joins under Enclave authority, while Dez prepares false studio identities for Riley, Callie, and Nash. Sato also reports that Zara Bellarose has been released and that former Enclave specialist Luca Cardelli delivered demon cuffs to her. Riley separately investigates Amelia Hunt, the woman she knew as Amelia Cruz and still considers her mother, uncovering a hidden education, technical training, and an unresolved art-heist case. Tests by Helen and the other witches show that Riley can pass through wards and disrupt magical effects by direct contact. Helen believes Riley is a rare null, and the group hides this because the coven may confine and use her. Riley tells Max Volkov during their first official date. He promises to defend her freedom, and their relationship becomes more serious. The date ends as the crew prepares to begin its undercover work in Los Angeles.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Riley, Callie, Nash, Dez, and Craig reach Los Angeles and divide the surveillance, research, security, and studio work. Riley’s stunt-double cover nearly collapses after she injures a partner, but Dez compels the coordinator to restore her job. Riley then meets Monty Corville and discovers that he is a vampire concealing his natural eye color. Corville invites Riley and Callie to his pool party. An unknown blonde witch plants a confounding hex on Riley, but Helen identifies it and Riley destroys it without magical backlash. At the party, Callie distracts Corville while Riley approaches the upstairs display. Corville disintegrates after diving into a magically altered pool, and a rival team steals the spellbook during the panic. Riley survives being thrown from the balcony and fights off the same blonde witch, while her masked male collaborator escapes. Drone footage shows that a pool worker added something before the party, and Nash identifies part of a distinctive tattoo. Riley’s crew returns to Kansas City while the unidentified rival thieves retain the demon spellbook.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Martha Matthews seizes Riley for a forced coven evaluation, but Riley escapes by shifting into goat form and slipping the magic-canceling cuffs. An emergency tribunal considers the coven's claim. Max Volkov argues that Riley falls under shifter authority, then uses his tie-breaking power to reject Martha's request, though Celeste threatens to seek an Enclave ruling. Riley refuses Volkov's offer of pack protection. His mother, Irina Volkov, later tells Riley that Volkov is expected to inherit his father's leadership and needs a compliant pack partner. Riley rejects that view but will not ask Volkov to abandon his future. Riley also breaks into coven headquarters and finds severe containment procedures and evidence that the coven knows she resists alpha commands. Cage Sato explains that the stolen spellbook may help tear open the boundary between the human and demon realms and that a concealed prophecy involves demon kings and air and water elementals. Investigation of pool-chemical purchases leads to Robert Thompson, a set designer from Corville's film and the likely pool worker. Recovering the book is now urgent, while the coven dispute waits for the job to end.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

A magical tripwire detonates an improvised bomb at Riley’s apartment. Riley shields Helen, who survives, but the landlord’s son is critically injured and the attacker remains unknown. Dez identifies Robert Thompson’s wife, Phoebe, as the air-magic attacker from Corville’s house and locates the couple’s old missile silo in Nebraska. The team learns that Phoebe can alter rituals and believes Robert may host a powerful war demon, though the evidence remains indirect. Garth communicates through a Ouija board and reveals that he himself hosts a dangerous vengeance demon while retaining his own agency. Riley’s group continues to treat him as an ally. Martha then presents a claimed emergency Witch’s Council order alleging that Riley caused the apartment explosion. Max Volkov forces Martha’s witches to release Riley, allowing Riley, Bea, Nash, and Dez to leave for Nebraska. Helen and Garth remain behind.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

At the Nebraska silo, Bea introduces Erica, a fire elemental sent through a Witch's Council contact without Riley's approval. The decision creates a rift between Riley and Bea, and Erica's insistence on involving authorities makes her an operational risk. Riley and Nash enter while Dez controls surveillance. Nash safely crosses an ordinary ward, but Riley recognizes separate blood magic and avoids it. Inside, she finds Robert and Phoebe using the demon spellbook over a ritual map. They are tracing a child who can wield both water and air, intending to sacrifice the child to weaken the forge and tear the veil. Riley disrupts the rite, seizes the book, and confronts Robert. Bea traps him inside a salt circle marked with the war demon's sigil. Phoebe injures Bea and incapacitates Erica, but Riley absorbs Phoebe's air magic and releases it, stripping Phoebe's power before Bea knocks her unconscious. The team recovers the spellbook and glowing map. One week later, the crew names its warehouse GOAT, short for Grabbing Overpriced Artifacts and Titles. Riley and Bea remain strained. Riley joins Max Volkov at his children's Nutcracker opening, understanding the production as a memorial to Anya and becoming part of that private remembrance.

How does it end? (ending)

Riley's team interrupts Robert and Phoebe Thompson's ritual at the Nebraska missile silo. Bea contains Robert, Phoebe is knocked unconscious, and Erica is left unconscious after joining the fight. The crew escapes with both the demon spellbook and the ritual map, but their final custody and the later fate of the three people at the silo are not established. Riley's ability to absorb and release Phoebe's air magic proves that her power is more than simple nullification. One week later, the crew formally names its warehouse GOAT, short for Grabbing Overpriced Artifacts and Titles. Riley and Max Volkov attend the opening of his children's Nutcracker production, and he includes her in his remembrance of Anya. The immediate ritual has failed, but the child who commands water and air remains unidentified. Zara Bellarose and Luca Cardelli are still free, the apartment bombing and the coven's claimed containment order remain unresolved, and Riley still does not know the source or limits of her abilities or the truth of her parentage. Riley and Bea have eased their immediate conflict without fully repairing it.
