In short (whole book)
Elaine joins the Sixth Legion's covert intervention in the Han civil war, but first helps Iona and Nina save captives from explosive collars and then heals both armies at Heping Gu. Embedded under the name Bunny, she eventually resumes open service as Sentinel Dawn. Across three years of campaigning, the Legion loses Leonidas, survives major battles, and breaks with its employers to stop a city-burning atrocity. A Guardian ends the attack and judges members of both armies, forcing the Sixth to withdraw. Elsewhere, Nina becomes a Valkyrie but kills a child ruler who requested sanctuary, believing his death will prevent a longer war, and leaves Iona to train separately. Back in Exterreri, Elaine refuses divine ascension, chooses Arbiter of Life and Death for its protective power, and becomes engaged to Iona. The closing interlude leaves phoenixes mistakenly or incompletely convinced that a missing sister is being held in Exterreri.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Elaine is an oathbound healer, immortal Sentinel, and traveler from Earth who has built a life in Exterreri after surviving wars, captivity, and the loss and recovery of crucial memories. She is also known in service as Sentinel Dawn. Iona, her Valkyrie partner, travels with the frost-wyvern Fenrir, while the phoenix Auri is Elaine's bonded companion. Elaine's ancient vampire mentor Knight has returned after a long absence, and Arachne commands Exterreri's Sentinel organization. Artemis and Julius are important friends from Elaine's earlier life. Elaine's exceptional healing can preserve entire formations, but it remains constrained by mana, lighting, her oath, and injuries that kill before healing can act. She is attached to Legata Katerina's Sixth Legion and must determine how an independent healer can serve an army without surrendering her moral judgment.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Elaine advances her third class to Ancient Loremaster of Legend and chooses abilities for mobile storage, rapid object movement, research, and travel. Her new map still cannot locate the lost places of her past. Iona returns with Nina, a malnourished teenage kitsune who survived on Sanguino's streets through theft and illusion. Elaine heals her, and Iona formally accepts her as a squire. They plan a patient recovery and training path that respects Nina's interest in both physical combat and deceptive magic. Auri opens a bakery, while Elaine begins building professional ties with the other War Sentinels. Their advice confirms that her vast battlefield healing needs mana batteries, concealment, and a small support team. Arachne asks her to remain discreet. Legata Katerina then assesses Elaine for Sixth Legion service. Elaine proposes operating as a concealed rear-line healer, and Katerina accepts the concept provisionally while identifying curses, drowning, and abrupt lethal trauma as serious limits.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
A full-force exercise proves that Elaine can keep hundreds of legionnaires alive through otherwise lethal combat under favorable light. Katerina begins arranging battery support and keeps Elaine's apple-linked curse weakness confidential. Elaine privately researches how to propose to Iona. Nina trains with Iona, works in Elaine's clinic, and learns that both illusion and authority carry consequences. When the Three Dragons Triad attacks the clinic, Elaine protects Nina without killing the assailant. Ranger Team Gale takes over the related corruption investigation, and Elaine receives self-repairing enchanted armor. Nina reaches the threshold needed to reset her Mugger and Illusionist classes, then starts again on page and apprentice paths aimed toward becoming a squire. Elaine accepts a voluntary mission to recruit a possible Earth traveler in Nippon-Koku. Before leaving, the household gains a permanent villa in Sanguino. Nina receives biomantic treatment for years of deprivation, Iona consecrates a chapel, and Elaine, Iona, and Fenrir depart while Auri and Nina remain home.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
The Nippon-Koku target proves to be from Earth, but refuses recruitment and plans to steal a dragon egg. Iona's vow requires her to stop him. She defeats him in a duel, after which a giant anglerfish kills him, ending the mission without a recruit but also preventing a possible dragon disaster. Elaine and Iona agree that they want to marry, though Elaine worries about their unequal lifespans. Arachne then recruits Elaine for a deniable Sixth Legion campaign in the Han civil war. Artemis and Julius reunite with Knight, while Iona takes Nina on an independent training circuit. The Sixth prepares to deploy as the Ironside Brigade in support of Wang Jian's faction. Elaine will hide inside Nike's mana-battery line rather than appear openly as Sentinel Dawn. At the portal, Iona arrives with an emergency: Nina is holding shut the dead-man switch on explosive slave collars. Elaine abandons the departure to help, promising only that she will find the Legion in Han.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Elaine reaches the slavers' cave shortly before Nina collapses. She cannot remove every collar in time, but combines shielding, dispelling, and healing so that all eighteen remaining collared captives survive the simultaneous explosions. Nina reaches the level needed for Squire classes, and the group carries the survivors to a concealed settlement before heading toward Han. They divert to the Battle of Heping Gu, where Elaine heals combatants from both Yan and Chu across more than a kilometer. A Yan great general nearly kills her and battles Iona before withdrawing. Afterward, Elaine continues treating abandoned wounded despite executions, looting, exhaustion, and pressure from the victorious Chu. Iona protects patients and negotiates room for Elaine to work. In the Chu camp, Elaine's unseen blessing strengthens the surgeon Hongjia's healing oath. After a day of relief work, Iona, Nina, and Fenrir pursue traffickers while Elaine and Auri finish aiding Yan survivors. Elaine gains many levels and finally locates the Sixth Legion.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
Katerina reprimands Elaine for disrupting the deployment and embeds her as Legionnaire Bunny, a seemingly minor ranger and healer. Elaine hides inside an ordinary line, but the disguise limits her ability to use safe, nonlethal methods. After an ambush forces her to kill secretly to protect her comrades, she concludes that ordinary soldiering conflicts with her oath and asks to resume Sentinel duties. Katerina agrees while preserving the Bunny cover where useful. Meanwhile, Iona and Nina follow the armies and protect villages from allied foragers. Nina kills an attacker while defending civilians and struggles with the experience. As a major battle approaches, Elaine visits them, then enters the enemy camp followers' district under a neutral magical disguise. She heals widespread illness but stops short of the main camp when fires and disorder erupt. Iona chooses to guard civilians and supply lines from wolf raiders rather than join the coming battle, while Elaine returns to the Sixth for open battlefield support.
Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)
The Sixth enters battle in a compact formation built around Dawn's healing range. An enemy mage's black-lotus attack causes cascading explosions and seven deaths, exposing the scale of Elaine's power. Katerina unleashes shadow duplicates of the Legion, and the formation drives through the enemy line while taking prisoners where possible. Harpy attacks kill Specks, and Leonidas dies outside Elaine's coverage. Auri strikes the opposing command area, helping break organized resistance. Elaine then crosses the field healing soldiers from both sides, with Ren assigned to protect her. The enemy general tries to compel her service by repeatedly wounding his own guards. Elaine kills him, seizes his command records, and returns to the Legion. Katerina promotes Tribune Pierce to temporary second-in-command and confirms that Elaine is still the designated successor if Katerina dies. Elaine reaches new class levels but recognizes that her revealed healing, the general's death, and Leonidas's loss have permanently changed the campaign's risks.
Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)
Three years pass in skirmishes, sieges, and shifting contracts. Elaine detects an attempt by the Lady of Death to poison the Legion, and Ren protects her from wardens enforcing the Treaty of Kyowa. Nina grows into a full Valkyrie candidate, while Iona dedicates a recovered divine sword to her moon goddesses. Katerina's intuition eventually uncovers a plan to burn a crowded wooden city with thousands of incendiary lanterns. The Sixth turns against the surrounding forces, and Elaine, Auri, Iona, Nina, and Fenrir fight to save civilians. A giant kun peng arrives as a Guardian. Its storm extinguishes fires and heals survivors, but its judgment also kills selected participants in both armies, including two legionnaires Elaine cannot save. The attack's commander is destroyed and the opposing army collapses. Katerina orders withdrawal from Han through Roland. Elaine and Iona search the ruins for survivors, Auri chooses a lava-aligned third class after witnessing the destruction, and Elaine leaves to warn Exterreri's embassy of the diplomatic crisis.
Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)
On the withdrawal, Katerina draws the Lady of Death into a trap and has Auri execute her. Separate attacks destroy the Chu leadership and much of the Qin imperial line. A surviving child ruler reaches a tabernacle and invokes sanctuary. Iona, Nina, Fenrir, and the Valkyrie Order's Grand Master defend him against an army, with Iona holding the entrance while Nina guards the child. Nina decides that preserving his claim will prolong the war and cost far more lives. She kills him and presents his body to the attackers, ending the assault. Iona nearly strikes Nina, but the Grand Master intervenes. She judges that Nina failed the specific duty entrusted to her while also recognizing that Nina's outcome-based ethics differ fundamentally from Iona's absolute commitment to sanctuary. Nina begins defining a Valkyrie path of her own. The defense ends, but the act breaks the mentor and daughter-like bond between Nina and Iona and leaves their future relationship unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
Elaine returns to the villa, where Artemis, Julius, and Iona await her. Nina is safe, has become the Fox Valkyrie, and has left to train elsewhere, leaving Iona grieving their separation. During Elaine's level-768 advancement, she receives both extraordinary healing classes and an incomplete offer to ascend as an Angel of Mercy. Divine powers offer knowledge, healing authority, and a possible eternal future beside Iona, while the goddess of life warns of a threat approaching from beyond the world. Elaine refuses ascension because she is not ready to abandon her mortal responsibilities. She chooses Arbiter of Life and Death, favoring shields and preventive battlefield power over still greater healing volume, then accepts Iona's marriage proposal. A later interlude shows ordinary Sixth Legion life continuing under Katerina's rule. Farther away, delayed and distorted reports convince phoenixes that a long-missing sister in the south is being held by a human in Exterreri, creating a new conflict from a belief that may be false or incomplete.
How does it end? (ending)
Elaine returns to Exterreri after the Sixth Legion survives the Han campaign and breaks with the forces behind the burning-city attack. Katerina remains commander, Pierce serves as temporary second, and Elaine remains Katerina's designated successor after Leonidas's death. Iona's defense of sanctuary ends when Nina kills the child Qin ruler to halt the wider bloodshed. Nina becomes the Fox Valkyrie and leaves for further training, while Iona still regards her as a daughter despite their unresolved breach. At home, Elaine declines ascension as an Angel of Mercy, chooses Arbiter of Life and Death to gain stronger preventive defenses, and accepts Iona's marriage proposal. Auri, Fenrir, Artemis, and Julius remain connected to the household. Open threats include the warning of danger beyond the world, enemies specialized against legendary beings, diplomatic consequences from Han, and phoenixes acting on a garbled belief that their missing sister is captive in Exterreri.
